This is really a good discussion thread. I' ve seen counter' s post on his trades but the buying and selling points are really too precise to believe..

I' m more towards Lucky03' s view on NOL and investments. With a long term perspective, short term bets are feasible too.

I started with 0.985 level, mostly 0.98 and some 0.94, but bad Q2 result got me to sell short term positions at 0.94 again. Then the mini rally is here. Not planning to sell or buy at current stage, my positions are small. I' m more fundamental driven. This is my experience just for sharing.

You can do better than that ! I can see why danger addressed you as Mr tactical horse back cannon )

You are selling or already sold ?

Good luck to all die hard NOL supporters !

I was saying that  only fools interpret long-term view as [die die hold it for a long period of time regarding of what happens in the world or his world] but you said that I was deadly not right and then went on to talk about your disappointment in NOL and APL.

I am confused???

The sanction are not imposed on Ukraine. You have misunderstood the issue. Go and read up more and come back again.

Thinking out LOUD about this economic sanction or economic war  on Ukraine ad what effects does it have on the world ?

Exactly how big is the Ukraine economy ? Is the the United states or China ? Does it matter if the world put sanctions on it ?

Found out that the GDP per capita income of Ukraine is only $7,400 . Compared to that of Singapore : $62,100 . Or America about : $55,000

Ukraine doens' t have much or nil natural resources  of its own . It has to import 90% of its energy need mainly natural gas and oil .

So in another words , oil price will not be affected much too .

Ukraine main exports about 60% goes to all the ex-soviet states . Some to EU . So effect is neglible . Ukraine and all the EU states are connected via land

So economic sanction on Ukraine on  NOL or shipping stocks will have minimal impact . Most likely exports are done by railway .

Counter, so far, Dow and European markets may not have shared your concern with how far the Ukraine battle can escalate into 3rd World War. The economic sanctions may have temporary impact to stall growth but they should be able to get around it and who knows, may speed up the decision to introduce more stimulus and QE to spur the Euro economy and asset purchase. Well, you may have sold out but if NOL decides to move ahead and you still remain very optimistic, you are welcome to rejoin the NOL ship to buy back even if at higher price so long as it still have the potential to move much higher, right ? )

It is a shame that there are still some people who think that a war can only be  fought with weapons. They don' t seem to have the slightest inkling of an economic war.

Am I taking risk? Yes, I am. I take calculated risk.

Is the risk high in my investment. No, it is not. Different people have different stomach for risk.

Did I get into NOL thinking that it  would turn profitable in Q2. No, I didn' t. I hold a long term view.

I still believe that NOL is a good investment given the price. I will accumulate more shares if the price falls substantially.

Different people have different investment philosophy. You cannot presume that you know what suits and works an every investor.

earlybird14      ( Date: 08-Aug-2014 08:43) Posted:

In my opinion, you should look at Korea and japan operators who break even in this quarter. I believe they didn't order as much as new giant vessels as nol but they manage to break even.

Year ago, I was convinced that APL is a high cost company running in nol. We singapore are willing to change and adapt new structure to be profitable and as competitive as possible. However samething may not be happen in US. The management and staff there may still enjoy beer and their high bonus and not willing to change. So problem is not nol is APL.

Very less volume are traded in nol, BB may play up and down which still give chance to earn small profit. However, putting the money in it mean taking the huge risk that tomorrow NOL may go default payment on loan or right issue, no matter which happen, with weak foundation of nol, price surely will be punished.

Why taking so high risk in your investment. There may a lot of share in sgx, us hk and erg worth to invest

Lucky03 I completely I agree with you on this !!!!

Like I said u might be the only true hardcore investor left.... yr once buddy had ditched you despite arguing so desperate ly with earlybird about the good of NOL and long term investing

And this long term investing I learn is now last for max few weeks to 1 or 2 mths only

Enough to be out with no loss...heng ah

Lucky03      ( Date: 15-Aug-2014 08:02) Posted:

It will affect the market as a whole but your argument now is for people to sell NOL and buy into MIDAS because you switched and now giving reason why it is time to drop NOL because you sold out. Not very sincere recommendation and a bit patronizing when you kept addressing fellow bros and veteran but also calling anyone with differing opinion as dead wrong, naive, unbelievable. It will be interesting if earlybird re-emerges as you 2 can call each bros lah.

counter      ( Date: 15-Aug-2014 07:46) Posted:

Yes and that is good news to me too as I still have holdings in some stocks, some substantially more than my holdings in NOL. However, Putin' s remarks do not mark the end of the crisis as he is an extremely sly leader. How the crisis will unfold is anybody' s guess. However, given  the influence of Putin' s remarks on the markets, one needs to understand that  the geo-political risk is not something that  can be confined to Ukraine like what you suggested, as far as an investor is concerned. The impact of the Ukraine crisis on the markets can be very substantial. You need to think far beyond the events in the shipping industry.
