the major problem is online retailers getting a slice of the cake, and they have fatter purse to splash out goodies, which SS do not have.. 
ShengShiong do have several issue ahead ( my personal comment )
1. Stores and labour are major cost for them ( new stores take time to run in and initial cost take time to cover......MOST important no ganrantee it can make $$
2. Margins are getting thinner and competition are really tough......there is really no product differentiation between each other. Promotions and certain contest can last only so long.....are there real loyalty or price is still major consideration for retail.
3. Of course on line competition is a real concern
4. Tough market with no new catalyst for this business....and mgt gp dont seem to have innovative ideas to break out and be different.
Time may tell more about the movement in our local super market .

funny, then how about airbnb, grab,uber etc. Its not a matter of fighting by products. Its a matter of changing people lifestyle. End of the day, consumer still buying their darlie toothpaste, but using different channels. Demographics is right for this change, with the launch of smartphones and cheap data plans, and credit card facilities. More user friendly platforms... Will you still want to Q up at the super long ntuc cashier in few years time and lug your 10kg rice plus other household items or you spend your sunday without the hassle..

I cannot see how Amazon can priced lower than what is available in HDB suburbs.Stores are within reach of most households.Stores like Sheng Siong will continue to thrive and provide a much needed service to the community where it has a store.I am still bullish and will accumulate when there is a panic sell down.
This is a rock solid comp lead by very experienced mgmt. Amazon just brush it off. Overly play by trader/ mkt. It will rise back to its true value

They know the head winds are going to be strong.  Big  red numbers are probably those rentals that doesnt meet the sales-per-foot target which they want to close down.  They are still aggressively looking at (hearttland) areas which are promising.  Those transition will always impact the price action in the short term.  If you have faith in the mgmt, you should take advantage of buying it low during the transition period.

Sheng Siong Group&rsquo s 2Q17 was within expectations, as revenue grew 6.8% YoY to S$201.5m and PATMI was up 6.3% to S$16.1m. Revenue was driven by new stores (+5.2%), same store sales (+0.9%) and another 0.7% from Loyang Point and The Verge stores. 1H17 revenue of S$418.6m and PATMI of S$33.3m formed 51% and 52% of full year estimates.
The Verge store has closed in the third week of Jun, and the 41.5k sq ft Woodlands store will close in Oct, while a new 4k sq ft store at Bukit Panjang as well as a new 12k sq ft store at Woodlands St 12 will open in Sep and Oct respectively.
 
However, interim dividend was reduced from 1.90 S-cents/share last year to 1.55 Scents/share, implying a total forward annualized dividend yield of ~3.3% based on last trading price.
If history is any indication, we think the group may be opting to stay prudent and maintain a healthy balance sheet for expansion opportunities, such as purchase of stores in ideal locations, while there are also 12 HDB supermarket locations up for bidding in the next six months.
Nonetheless, we wait for further clarity from management during the analyst briefing. We have a  BUY  rating and  FV of  S$1.15.

Cannot compare...Amazon can buy a few Sheng Siong without sweat...they are just using Singapore as a test bed...

I think I will be more worried for Amazon. If Sheng Siong' s share price tank because of irrational news like these, I believe it is again an opportunity to scoop. There is a Chinese saying: 强 龙 斗 不 过 地 头 蛇
