Yes. PE> 20, so not easy to jump 30~50% . But so far relatively stable return and the current drop (from " coffee shop" hearsay) is to show " their power" , how easy ppl can be influenced....Er..oops...say too much.

Yes. We would actaully feel that is the fund trying to con confused players to throw & hope to couple with the " online operator'
to make the holders throw with a reason. And we bought some, most likely from ang mo and some follow crowd shortists.
We should not be played by them. In order not to be played by them easily, we should not over-stretch ourselves.

8/8 could go both ways, with many weak players queueing to sell their shares after getting dividends.
Good. Working towards that and will coupled with 8/8 effect.

Don' t think Amazon is targetting the heartlanders who shop at Sheng Siong, Giant or NTUC. More like those who shop at Cold Storage and the other up market supermarkets catering to the monied folks. I believe this exercise is done to first capture the spending habits of the richer residents in Singapore and then after filtering thru their inhouse AI, target them for more higher margin sales with recommendations and promotions.
That said, Amazon might take the cream off the top of high margin items in the regular supermarkets, this might squeeze the margins affecting the bottom line. Then there are the tech savvy who just like to support tech thingies even if things are more expensive. Amazon' s paper grocery bag looks cool.

Hmm...don' t like that lah. May be this time not like & correct.
For grab & uber....they play " cheat" , they start with burn $$ technique, throw $$ to attract ...now business is getting difficult many use throat cut technique...
For SPH, ...Err....this one cannot anyhow say.

| In Singapore it is not like in US where people are moving towards shopping on line even their groceries. Here we go to hawker centres to eat drink and also shop in super markets. We enjoy our trips to stores and the shopping experience. This is a wrong notion that e-commerce will kill businesses like Sheng Siong in Singapore. I believe many will agree with this. |

It is fundamentally erroneous to compare the current price to the IPO price, considiering that revenues, number of stalls, free operating cash flow has increased over the years.
The curent dip is surely due to irrational pessimism and a lot of speculative movements. Sheng Siong financial report for AY 17 has been pretty solid, if not unspectacular albeit a cut in %profit divident. An intelligent investor at this time shld be blocking out the noise and ask himself these questions.
1) Will this company will continue doing well in headwinds caused by ecommerce disruption
2) Can the coy revenue continue to grow ie. open more stalls
3) Will China' s investment take off
4) How much profit margin affected
5) Do  you trust the management to keep its promise to leave 90% of profits as dividend
Am not currently vested but I' ve always liked this company and hence observing closely. DYODD

lets just think, does the current management team has experience to deal with online threats? Even when years ago, ecommerce is in its infancy, SS did not do much to capture the market. Why?
The management team has aged, and has successfully build up by bricks over the past 20 years. Now facing new competitors which are so big and has so much experience in the ecommerce field, not sure if it is wise to fight them in the same area. They should concentrate on their retail biz and be contented with what is left. They have already earned their gold pot, do you think they will be looking to burn their money to fight the giants, or just shake the tree to its bare bones. Their wealth can eat many generations already even if the share price plunged by 70%, its still pretty much their IPO price, which is a premium to their valuations..
So, in short, is the management driven enough to fight and has the expertise to do so? It' s in an industry that is going to change a lot in the next few years.  |

Wondering what will happen if Amazon brings in American products instead of selling similar products availabke in all the local supermarts.
