This is precisely my point. In big countries like USA the distances are very far and not convenient and if they do not drive then it is OK to order online. I do agree that Q-up is annoying then you may go to self checkout like they have in Gaint/NTUC/Cold storage. Dont forget all these stores are within our proximity being a small place.

Price wise, there is no consistency. Most of time i would say prices @ Brick and mortars are cheaper compared to redmart/honest bee (source : Parents & a few aunties who shops in SS,Giant, NTUC).

Not to mention Brick & Mortar carry more variety of product compared to redmart/honest bee. Having said that, redmart/honest bee is always running out of stock on certain products (I' m sure they can fix that with data analystics) & still I think the emphasis is on fresh food products. If you ask me i would still buy fresh food from brick & mortar.

Do not underestimate the culture of shopping in supermarket. Some ppl  love to shop in the supermarket, it helps them relieve stress. Some families enjoy the process of shopping in supermarkets

Bonus, Brick & mortar carry out promotions that is not available online such as free gifts (tupperware ect).

It is not only SS but GIANT and NTUC will also feel the heat. Those who are skeptical should go and check out the prices and compare.
Why would i queue to pay then just wait for it to b e delivered within 2 hours.and save money.

for other countries with big house may be....for Singapore, trap inside a very small room, going out to shop may help to relax a bit.
Furthermore, can find near the house. Not like big countries, some quite far.
Anyway, ppl have different needs. Let' s see wat will happen...may SS Singapore Brand strive & expand with strong foot for oversea too.

This is a cash positive business and not like USA where people shop on line. Here we like to go out to malls and you will see more malls like TP Hub being built. Ananysis ate talking nonsence.

No one expect Amazon to kill SS, but how much impact it will hurt SS? Example, if Amazon take away 10% of SS revenue, what's the impact on its earning?

BillionX      ( Date: 05-Aug-2017 14:43) Posted:

For Amazon to succeed it is dependent on good old fashion physical delivery unlike the likes of ticketing agents, financial institutions that can deliver its finished product electronically and yet these businesses still flourish despite the doomsday predictions. The likes of SS will continue to remain relevant given Singapore size and easy connectivity.Shops are readily everywhere and in a perfect economy such as Singapore pricing advantage is minimal.Amazon will serve customers who are immobile ,elderly .Why wait 2 hours for delivery when there are shops within walking distance.

Agree that majority of SS customer is not Amazon targeted customer. But SS would be difficult to attract new customer group this limit the growth. I think it is too early to speculate if SS will be taken over. I would rather bet on Dairy farm which has regional reach if I want supermarket exposure.

All 3 major groceries marts NTUC, GIANT and SS are now slashing prices to match Amazon.

I would advise you to download the app and compare the pricing of what are offered and which is cheaper.

2 hrs delivery is excellent. the local marts needs 36 hrs to deliver (min) and spending at least 52 dollars (NTUC).

Why TPG burn money here?

My views on SSG.

1) SSG is a small company (unlike Dairy Farm)
2) SSG will not survive if Alibaba/Amazon decides to burn money to capture the market (just like how Uber burn their money to gain market share in china market not to mention Amazon love doing this too hurting their net profit (pathetic by the way) )
3) Point 2* will only happen if SG consumers start shifting their buying behaviour to e-commerce (that includes buying fresh food online). & it doesnt make sense to burn so much money in SG just to capture a small market share like Singapore (What is singapore' s population again?)
4) almost 50% of SSG' s revenue is derived from Fresh food.
5) If you believe in what Jack Ma' s startegy & beliefs. Mr Ma believes that Brick and Mortar will and nv replace E-commerce especially in this industry. Hence the creation of Hema Supermarket in China. Having said that O2O is important too.
6) Jack Ma has E-comm presence in Singapore (Redmart) have no Brick and Mortar presence. Applying point 1) and 5) , is there a possibility that Jack Ma will acquire SSG in the future?

If yes, I think the one should start to accumlulate this stock

Fair enough. I did went out of point by saying it makes no sense to burn money in Singapore.

What I am trying to put accross it the entry of Amazon (With Only E-commerce presence) is over hyped and overshadowed the potential of SSG getting acquired by one of the gaints such as Alibaba & Amazon itself.
If Singapore is such an important startegic play to them, the chances of SSG getting acquired will only go up.

When it comes to Retail/Grocery industry. Seems like our 2 gaint Amazon & Alibaba are on the same page where they believe they need not only e-commerce but also brick & mortar to play this game. Alibaba setting up Hema & Amazon acquiring Whole Food.

With both Gaints Alibaba (redmart) & Amazon with only e-commerce presence in Singapore does it not make sense their next step is to find a " small" company with already brick and mortar to acquire. And again i think SSG stands a good chance of getting acquired.
