You need to see the facts laid out infront of you. COE is cheaper now than 4 years ago. To your left, right, front and back, you will see at least one PHV at any one time. This is despite of the zero growth COE policy since 2 years ago.

what nonsense, the govt carlite policy applies to all private cars and taxis including PHV' s
if coe increased by 20% tmr, u think the number of PHV will be growing?

Conman      ( Date: 14-Nov-2020 10:07) Posted:

Of course CDG's taxi fleet is going down but not be ause of gov's carlite policy but because PHV's competition. There are more than 72,000 PHVs now and the gov did not impose a limit on its number. Every private car you see on the road now can be converted to a PHV so PHV is only limited by the total number of the car population in Singapore.

It is a shame that CDG is running away from competition. This is why I said eventually it might have only 1000 taxis. Any gap left behind will be filled by the other taxi companies and PHV companies. CDG can then proudly tell its investors that taxi only constitutes 1% of its business

nah, train fares still go to CDG
public transport will become so convenient in the near future that grab cars and taxis will be kept at the minimum - in line with the long term goal of CDG to reduce taxi segment and expand public transport locally as well as overseas

What you said is the ideal. This gov does has a carlite policy. But as a society moves towards middle-class majority, its gov cannot demand people to take bus or trains or walk if they can afford to travel in cars. In the 1980s, there were people migrating because cars were becoming too expensive. Many nowadays take Grab whenever they step out of their homes. It has become a habit too late to change. The gov now cannot offend Grab drivers and Grab passengers and their families without losing their votes. You saw that in London, where not even the mayor could fight Uber. You saw riots everywhere between taxi drivers and Uber drivers and the former still die. This is how Uber invade the whole world. It is the use of the very locals (drivers, riders, and their families).to fight their own gov and the taxi drivers.

BTW, train and bus fares go to the gov and not the operators if I am not wrong.

The govt will never allow private cars number to grow over time simply because our roads can' t grow wider - tht is why u see ERP everywhere and coe prices shooting over the roof to discourage middle/upper/top class people from driving on the road. And upper/top class ppl do not need the money from driving grab car

Compare our mrt map now versus 20 years ago, u will know the long term trending for transportation
there will always be a minority group who need cars, and thts y taxis and private car hires are still in demand but these will definitely be kept at the min in demand level

The long term govt plan is to go green! - less cars (taxi / grabcar etc) on the road too many private cars contribute to traffic congestion and air pollution - govt don' t want that.. Public transport is the way to go

big picture is to structurally favour public transport over private vehicle ownership

SMRT is now fully own by Temasek and is the gov's trump card if CDG chut pattern. A precedence we witnessed recently was PUB's take-over of Hyflux's Tuas Power Plant. For trains and buses, it is even easier because all assets belong to the State and not CDG.

Sometime I feel u try too hard. SMRT is a sure win formula. privatise have more pros then cons.
CDG on the other hand. You think taxpayer money easy ah. Did you ask taxpayer.....

You can wait forever for Temasek to privatise CDG. It already has SMRT. The Bus Contracting Model had resuced CDG to just a contractor. If CDG breaches its contracts or go bankrupt, LTA can repossess its assets and send in SMRT management. All train drivers, bus drivers and workshop staff will be handed a new contracts. No commuter will notice the difference.

Regulators need to have alternatives ready. BCM is in anticipation of any thing might happen. If CDG chut pattern, plan B will be activated. HDT Taxis is another example LTA is testing. With some modifications, it could be the taxi model of the future.

Comfort Delgro is better known as a taxi operator and has bragged to be the world's biggest company for many years. Comfort Taxis and CityCabs and a small Tibs (the present SMRT) monopolised the Singapore market because there were no Transcab, no Premier Taxis, no Prime Taxis, no Grab, no Go Jek, etc. It accummulated big profits by renting out taxis in a environment and ventured into taxi business overseas. Suzhou was the first, then a few other cities in China and then Indonesia. I dont know whether these businesses are now dead or alive with Didi now controlling China and GoJek and Grab controlling Indonesia. Elsewhere, the Ang Mo only take Uber. Another 10 years, maybe in some cities, taxis will extinct by itself.

It is a shame that this company, which grew out of the most lucrative trade of renting out taxis, is waving white flags and surendering. Now it claims that taxi is only 13% of its business. Of course, it only has 8,000 taxis now, not 18,000 at its peak. Next year maybe the 13% will become 10%, and 5 years later 1%.

This is why I said eventually, it is likely to have only 1000 taxis. And taxis will be like buses, owned by the government with the drivers employed by CDG like public buses and trains.

You mean private cabs will be banned soon?

These brokerages got take taxis or not? Or they only take Grab?

Taxi operator ComfortDelGro may have had a bumpy 2020, but the company is getting out, ' slowly but surely ' , say analysts. Four brokerages recommend &lsquo buy&rsquo or &lsquo add&rsquo on ComfortDelGro following its 3Q20 results this week.
