A good set of results....and expected strong 2014 too.  17 cents dividend this quarter and by March 3rd the takeover issue will be known......
OCBC is having strong support since going around 9.10 and by all standard paying anything below 2X BV is not consider expensive .....so we shall see this counter in early March. : ))
( anyway , fundamentally it is solid like a rock )

I have no confidence in the CEO actions ,he smells like a empire builder.

Firstly , decades old business sold without a public auction to a unsolicited bid using cheapskate time pressure trick= poor seller. Did not max potentially higher SH value thru a auction.

Secondly , went on to buy a overvalued HK bank when the BV is so much higher. A metaphor is exchanging gold for silver. Value dilutive , will likely decrease returns on equity.

Thirdly, poorly timing and hidden risks yet to surface makes for bad entry . Bank to be bought at record high price during economic boom time. record low NPLs and record high BV. Will get hit by double whammy, when interest rates eventually rise causing economic slow down and exploding NPLs.

Historically aggressive acquisition by sg bank leads to disastrous returns . phillipines...indo , thai buys......history has a uncanning way to repeat.

Business analyst all points to expansion thru lower risk organic growth leads to economic value based decision ...looks like its thrown aside for hungry expensive acquisition. This acquisition doesnt look like there can be alot of synergy to be exacted. The HK owners will be gleeing with delight for their windfall once its approved.

When insiders Leekahshing is busy selling his over priced China and HK assets for Europeans historically cyclical cheap assets., the outsides rush in to buy China. TSKTSK... not their own money, if acquisition makes it .....bonuses soars, if it doesnt or by the time it doesnt, next CEO will be in place will clear the shit.

In my opinion, lots of downside risk will be priced in when the china economy goes into a recession eventually since we are near the end of a long economic boom in Asia .In sg we got record high 78% household debt. Debt repayment and rising interest rates will dent the economy in the incoming recession. cavet emptor.

In comparison,

UOB having in the past been bitten in phillipines is being very smart. Its the smartest Best bank in my opinion. Mr Wee has sold lots of his inflated bonds ....well timed after a bountiful bond bubble due to bust once interest rates rise. Actions of a smart investor who understands value and of course runs the bank with the same value approach.

OCBC's Q4 net profit up 8% as Msia, Indon units deliver

OVERSEA-CHINESE Banking Corporation Limited (OCBC Bank) reported on Friday a net profit of S$715 million for the fourth quarter of 2013, 8 per cent higher than S$663 million a year ago.

The Singapore bank said the earnings were underpinned by a 22 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit from its banking operations that included record quarterly earnings from its Malaysian and Indonesian banking subsidiaries which grew 37 per cent and 17 per cent respectively in local currency terms (34% and 6% in SGD terms).

The group's net profit for the financial year ended December 31, 2013 was S$2.77 billion. Excluding non-core divestment gains of S$1.17 billion in FY12, core net profit was 2 per cent lower, as the strong customer-related business results throughout the year were offset by lower net trading income and unrealised mark-to-market lossesfrom Great Eastern's Non-Participating Fund.

For the quarter, net interest income achieved a new quarterly high from robust asset and deposit growth, rising 12 per cent to S$1.03 billion. Non-interest income was lower at S$679 million, down 10 per cent from S$757 million in 4Q12. This was largely attributed to lower net trading income that fell 49 per cent to S$69 million and lower life assurance profit that declined 22 per cent to S$165 million. Fees and commissions rose 12 per cent to S$341million, led by higher wealth management, loan-related and trade-related fees. Operating expenses for the quarter declined 1 per cent to S$713 million and net allowances were unchanged year-on-year at S$68 million

OCBC is the stock I like in STI component

Dear Friends,

The recent selldown in OCBC seems to be hard done. It all started when the news of a potential acquisition is in the cards.

We do think this stock is a mid to long term play as we believe there is a chance STI might have seen a bottom at 2950. If we are wrong, we think that there is limited downside left.

Whenever we think STI is cheap, I am always looking at the banks as a mid to long term play.

OCBC is the most selldown and of course it should be one of the most watched then. Speculators are always more short sighted in merger and acquisitions. And we think the expectation of the acquisition has already been priced in.

$9 is quite a good support, and it does look strong these few days.

A slightly longer duration play for me...

Now: $9.26
Target 1: $9.67
Target 2: $9.95

Stop loss: $8.95
