Such companies have no hard assets. Drivers are not their employees, while riders are not tied to them by any agreement. Buying one by another is in reality the 'buyer' paying for the 'seller' to leave the market. CCCS will not be able to stop GoJek from leaving Singapore, just like what happened during the Uber-Grab deal. Grab paid only for Uber to leave and did not buy one single car of Uber's subsidiary Lion City Rental.

anyone can sell delicious wanton mee for 10 cents a bowl to capture the whole market, but not everyone can earn a profit at 10 cents a bowl

What can CCCS do?

Merging entities are not required to notify CCCS of the merger but should carry out their own self-assessment. If they are concerned about infringing the Act, they should notify the merger to CCCS. In such cases, CCCS will determine whether the merger will substantially lessen competition and will publish its decision.

In the event that a merger which may substantially lessen competition comes to the attention of CCCS, we have substantial investigation powers that can be exercised if there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that the Act has been infringed. In the event of an infringement, CCCS can impose substantial financial penalties of up to 10% of the turnover of the business in Singapore for each year of infringement, up to a maximum of 3 years. Directions to remedy, mitigate or eliminate the adverse effects arising from the merger may also be issued.

Both Grab and GoJek are not the kind of fly-by-night drug peddlers at Geylang. The are the most valuable start-ups in this region worth US$15b (Grab) and US$10b (GoJek) respectively.

My predictions are:

1. CCCS will not be able to stop them from merging, which is a commercial decision between two private companies, if they decide to merge. They may not merge because of other reasons but would not be because of rejections by CCCS.

2. Whether loss-making or not, Grab will be here.

3. Grab will be listed in Singapore. It will be the first of its kind here and its IPO will shake the world and its shares will be over-subscribed many times. Funds will dump CDG shares and buy into Grab.

Lets see whether I am right or wrong in time to come.

It does not benefit the consumer or the drivers in Singapore to have Grab-Gojek merge.  It only benefits the shareholders.
Grab is repeating the same strategy of sleeping with the enemy, when the enemy gets formidable.  First Uber, now Gojek.

Not healthy for Singapore' s ride hail market to be dominated by Grab-Gojek.  ComfortDelgro is in a position to challenge this monopoly.  There are many levers it can pull to do so, as described in my previous messages.

2 important statements from this news

1)  Sources familiar with the matter have previously told Reuters that over the last few years, large investors of the two companies have backed a merger of both loss-making firms.

2)
The talks are still fluid and may not result in a transaction, the sources  said. The  deal would need regulatory approval and governments may have antitrust concerns  about the unification of the region' s two leading ride-hailing companies.

Loss making ride hailing structure can never be sustainable, and CCCS will never allow a monopoly to form

Media has reported that Grab might acquire GoJek. CCCS had been informed, and talks are going on.

What is going to happen to CDG Taxis when this comes theough?

CDG's taxi app will be further marginalised because Grab app will becomes 'the app' for booking a ride'. At present, already we see less of 'On-Call' blue or yellow taxis on the road, because they are all queuing at the taxi stands together with the red and silver colour cabs. No more hiding at one corner 'playing with calls' as they always did in the past.

No 'On-Call' business means the higher tental vis-a-vis the smaller taxi companies is no longer justified. Soon its taxi drivers will ask themselves why they are paying higher rental but have to queue with the cheaper taxis at the taxi stands.

This is one of the reasons why most taxi drivers of the smaller companies have driven a CDG taxi before. Of course there were orher reasons which will make CDG look silly if I were to talk about it.

CDG is no more the World' Biggest Taxi Company for sure. From 13%, we will see 10%, 5%, and finally 1% in about 10 years.

December is usually a quiet month despite all the 'good news' according to this Turkey Bird Theory. Christmas rallies usually dont happen, and the uncles will be told that it is because the Fund Managers are on year-end holidays. If window dressing dont happen, uncles will be told that it has already happened in November when the Fund Managers closed their books before going for holiday.

So uncles must pump from here.

Conman      ( Date: 03-Dec-2020 05:15) Posted:

According to the Turkey Bird Theory, funds' need to pay their staff to buy turkey. So they pump in the month of November, catching the retailers unprepared. Many retailers took 3 pips profits and celebrate in the coffee shops drinking coffee. Others will be in a state of shock but have no more money to buy because they have lost all, or dare not buy.

Funds will hold the prices high, perhaps dropping them little by little while preading good news (only good news) to lure the retailers to buy from them and pick durain. They will then earn 300 pips and book profits and pay bonuses for their staff to order turkey birds for Chrismas.

A very MERRY CHRISMAS to all uncles!

Obviously it depends on the value of 1 pip. It can be $100, $1000, $10,000 or more / pip.

STI has probably peaked at 2900 and CDG peaked at 1.80. Going down sloqly will be very painful. People who believe what the fake bulls said about Christmas rally, SG stocks being under-valued, vaccine success, economy being good, etc etc have been picking durains since the peak. Congrats!

Now STI depends on these uncles to pump to 3000 points. Anyone thinks Funds will pump for these uncles to sell for $$$ to buy log cakes, turkey and Christmas trees? IDK 🤑
