Raffles Medical H1 profit more than doubles to S$39.4m
Raffles Medical on Monday announced a net profit of S$39.4 million for the six-month period ended June 30, 2021, more than double the S$17.2 million from a year ago on the back of its support for the government' s Covid-19 initiatives. The group' s earnings per share stood at 2.11 Singapore cents, more than doubled the 0.94 cent for the previous year.
Revenue for the period also grew 42.4 per cent to S$343.8 million, up from S$241.4 million from a year earlier on the back of growth in the healthcare services and hospital services divisions by 65.4 per cent and 35.4 per cent respectively.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation rose to S$74.5 million, up 78 per cent from S$41.9 million from a year ago.
" In view of the current conditions, and barring unforeseen circumstances, including the worsening of the Covid-19 situation where the group operates, the group expects to be more profitable for FY2021 than FY2020," the group said in its results filing.
As Raffles Medical had earlier announced in February 2021, its directors have not declared any interim dividend as the group intends to consolidate its interim and final dividends into an annual core dividend of up to half its average sustainable profits after tax and minority interests with effect from FY2021.
Shares of Raffles Medical rose 0.8 per cent or S$0.01 to close at S$1.21 on Friday.

RHB raises Raffles Medical' s target price to S$1.35 on Singapore' s reopening plans
Raffles Medical will likely gain support for its near-term earnings amid easing restrictions and plans to reopen borders in Singapore, RHB said in a research note on Thursday. The research team raised its target price for the healthcare group to S$1.35 from S$1.29, after it increased its earnings estimates for Raffles Medical by 3 to 6 per cent for 2021 to 2023.
RHB also maintained its " buy" call on the stock, noting that the group may be able to achieve pre-pandemic earnings levels in 2021.
Raffles Medical, which runs 15 Covid-19 vaccination centres that account for about 40 per cent of the total vaccination capacity in Singapore, will likely post strong growth due to an aggressive vaccination programme amid plans to reopen the economy.
As the restrictions on larger-scale events and gatherings ease, the group should also gain from continued and frequent Covid-19 testing until the entire eligible resident population is fully vaccinated. The group provides Covid-19 testing at its 36 clinics and was also awarded contracts to provide testing services at regional screening centres and dormitories.
Raffles Medical will likely also benefit from plans to reopen borders, since it operates clinics and provides Covid-19 testing at Changi Airport.
Additionally, the resumption of overseas travel may lead to the return of some of the group' s foreign patients in 2022, which had accounted for 30 per cent of its patient load prior to the pandemic, RHB said.
The research team also expects Raffles Medical' s earning growth to be boosted by local patient load in Singapore returning to pre-pandemic levels in 2021, and the group' s Chongqing hospital achieving break-even in its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation in 2022.
RHB said the counter' s valuation " looks compelling, especially amid strong estimated earnings growth" , while noting that it has delivered 18 per cent returns this year and has outperformed the Straits Times Index by 7 per cent.
Shares of Raffles Medical closed unchanged at S$1.17 on Thursday.

Analysts raise targets on healthcare plays as Covid-19 testing, vaccinations ramp up, Companies & Markets - THE BUSINESS TIMES

TWO brokerages have raised their respective earnings forecasts for Raffles Medical Group and Q& M Dental Group as they consider these healthcare plays well-poised to capture opportunities presented by Covid-19.
In a report on Friday, UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH) reiterated its " buy" call on Raffles Medical Group with a higher target price of S$1.27 compared to S$1.12 previously to factor in 8 to 10 per cent higher earnings forecasts for FY2021 to FY2023.
In the view of UOBKH' s analysts, the stock is set to benefit from increasing Covid-19 testing in Singapore and an accelerated rate of vaccinations administered over the next few months.
" We opine that the sustained need for testing as well as continual screening for travellers will enable Raffles Medical to be a proxy for continued healthcare services as the Covid-19 situation evolves into an endemic," said the analysts.

They are expecting such Covid-19 related contributions to also help to offset a loss of government grant support in 2021.

Raffles Medical partners China Life unit to boost expansion in China

Raffles Medical: BSL +0.88% has partnered a subsidiary of China Life Insurance (Group) to boost collaborations in China' s healthcare market, as part of its continued expansion there.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the group said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Life Healthcare Investment Company (CLHI), a healthcare investment platform and service provider.

Both parties will look at initiatives across several areas, including collaborations in the provision of medical services, healthcare management, training and development as well as healthcare financing through insurance, with a focus on supporting ageing populations.

Raffles Medical said this partnership marks its continued investment and commitment to China where, through Raffles China Healthcare, the group has been providing services from primary to tertiary healthcare.

This includes the establishment of the first Singapore tertiary hospital in China with Raffles Hospital Chongqing in 2019 as well as international medical centres in eight cities across Greater China.

In addition to the newly completed Raffles Hospital Beijing, the group expects to inaugurate another tertiary hospital, Raffles Hospital Shanghai, this year.

Loo Choon Yong, executive chairman of Raffles Medical, said: " This strategic partnership with CLHI represents an evolution in our journey in China where we not only want to bring the Raffles brand of quality and compassionate healthcare, but healthcare financing solutions as well."
