Yup. Expect free fall for Starhub as $4.00 used to be a reliable support zone.

http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/mobile-operators-cease-2g-service-april-2017

Mobile networks have evolved since the launch of the 2G service in 1994, and only a small percentage of customers remain on 2G-only mobile devices (today), said the three mobile operators in a press release today.

According to the IDA, 2G pre- and post-paid subscriptions have been declining steadily, from over 2 million subscribers in June 2011 to about 250,000 today.

M1, Singtel and Starhub here will cease provision of 2G services from April 1, 2017, announced the three mobile network operators today (June 15).

The Information Development Authority of Singapore will also cease registration of 2G-only mobile communication equipment with effect from September 15 this year.

To cater to increased demand for mobile data and faster access speeds, the spectrum currently used for 2G voice, messaging and data services will make way for 3G and 4G services.

To facilitate the transition, the three mobile operators have agreed for their 2G-only subscribers to continue with their existing mobile plans at no additional cost after they have migrated to the more advanced networks, if they choose not to subscribe to new service plans.

I personally dont watch a lot of TV programs. For example, you can go to Sim Lim Square or People' s Park to buy a box, $99 (I think the box is called PADTV4 or something like that, you can google), to watch most channels via the internet. If you like those American NBA, NFL, or the European soccers, you can practically watch all games. My friend has it. If you have fibre optics, all the better. My friend told me it is legal.

Can you share how to stream Starhub programmes without using their set-top boxes.   Getting more and more expensive to rent their boxes.

Starhub is a pure reseller. The moment another better reseller comes into the picture, iits earnings will be hurt. And there is negligible NTA to back its share price. Plus less and less people are subscribing to set top boxes, as there are cheaper streaming alternatives.

Buffett is not a huge fan of companies that are exposed to macroeconomic risk. In other words he is unlikely to be enamoured by businesses that use excessive borrowings, which could make a company vulnerable to interest-rate hikes. StarHub is highly leveraged. Its Leverage Ratio of 41 is over 20 times higher than the market average.

On balance, StarHub is unlikely to appear on Buffett&rsquo s radar. It scores well on a number of measures but it might need to cut its debt burden significantly to appeal.

the last time it really went SUB 4 was in 2013. Still then it was with good support.   Will it change now?

1Q15 results disappointing due to increased smartphone sales which did not translate to higher mobile subscription revenue. Looks like the industry is getting more competitive and growth is unlikely to be sustained. However, company still has a strong balance sheet with a decent dividend yield of close to 5% which can  offer some  diversification benefits  for income investors.
