Indonesian-born Mr Oei is NatSteel' s largest shareholder after buying 29.25 per cent of the company in the open market for S$220 million. He has been locked in a struggle with state-backed investment consortium 98 Holdings for control of the group. 98 Holdings, which holds 26.7 per cent of NatSteel, has tabled a general bid for the company at S$2.03 a share, valuing it at S$737 million. The deadline for acceptances for the offer was extended last Wednesday and now expires on Monday. The rough-and-tumble showdown has taken centre-stage in the city-state, which is not often the scene for contested takeovers. 98 Holdings is backed by high-profile hotelier Ong Beng Seng, NatSteel' s management and state investment unit Temasek.
