Sats to invest over S$250 million to upgrade operations, cargo handling infrastructure at Changi Airport
These strategic initiatives will also enhance operational reliability and safety, and optimise turnaround times

[SINGAPORE] Catering and ground handling company Sats announced on Thursday (May 15) that it will invest over S$250 million to upgrade its ground operations and cargo handling infrastructure at Changi Airport.

These strategic initiatives will enhance operational reliability and safety, optimise turnaround times, and support growing cargo volumes at Changi Airport through to the mid-2030s when the new Terminal 5 (T5) and Changi East Industrial Zone are expected to begin operations, the group said.

T5, which will take around a decade to complete, will boost Changi&rsquo s total annual capacity to around 140 million passengers, up from 90 million now.

The S$250 million investment includes over S$150 million to be spent over the next five years for the renewal and expansion of Sats&rsquo business division Singapore Hub (SG Hub)&rsquo s ground support equipment fleet. The fleet comprises specialised commercial vehicles used to support airport operations.

Another S$100 million is being invested to enhance cargo operations over the next two years.

&ldquo SG Hub will bolster cargo operations across its airfreight terminals to address growing volumes, with a multi-phase enhancement beginning from the middle of this year,&rdquo Sats said.

The group will also focus on job redesign to enhance career pathways, upskilling initiatives for its staff, talent attraction and leveraging technology such as autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence to boost productivity.

Henry Low, chief executive officer of Sats Singapore Hub, said: &ldquo While the opening of Changi Airport T5 is about 10 years away, Sats is already undertaking extensive preparations to handle future operational demands by modernising our equipment and infrastructure alongside efforts to raise and sustain a future-ready and resilient workforce.&rdquo

&ldquo These upgrades and enhancements will enable us to support our airline customers more effectively and ensure that Singapore continues to excel as a world-leading air hub.&rdquo

Sats names first chief digital officer to lead global digitalisation initiatives
Sandeep Sakharkar joins at a time the company is advancing to the next stage of its transformation

[SINGAPORE] Catering and ground handling company Sats : S58 -0.34% on Tuesday (May 6) announced the appointment of Sandeep Sakharkar as chief digital officer, a newly created role.

The appointment, which took effect on Mar 17, sees Sakharkar leading the development and execution of Sats&rsquo digital strategy, focusing on integrating advanced data analytics, automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and operational improvements across the company&rsquo s global operations.

The announcement comes after Timothy Tang&rsquo s designation as group chief financial officer on Apr 24, as part of Sats&rsquo leadership renewal process.

Sakharkar became chief digital officer at a time the company is advancing to the next stage of its digital transformation, following its acquisition of global air cargo logistics provider Worldwide Flight Services (WFS).

Sats completed the 1.3 billion euro (S$1.9 billion) acquisition in April 2023, which helped the Singapore company expand its global operations. Last month, WFS opened a US$270 million cargo terminal at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York, the United States.

Sats is looking to set new industry standards and create smarter, more agile service solutions. It emphasised that its focus will be on &ldquo leveraging technology to enhance transparency, optimise supply chain performance, and elevate the end-to-end customer experience&rdquo .

Sakharkar brings to the role more than 25 years of experience in technology-driven transformation, most recently as global chief information officer at GXO Logistics. He has also held senior positions at Johnson & Johnson and Footlocker.

In addition, he is the founder of Datanoetic, an early-stage data, AI and process automation startup, where he remains non-executive chairman.

&ldquo Together with our talented global teams, we will scale digital capabilities, harness the power of modern digital, data and AI capabilities, and ensure our customers receive the highest levels of reliability, speed and service,&rdquo Sakharkar said.

cargo demand will shift from air to shipping
Sats likely to be affected with less airport cargo
US President Donald Trump said Washington has reached a ceasefire agreement with the Houthis.
The Oval Office announcement offers hope for the reopening of the Red Sea and Suez Canal to shipping companies that have avoided the route.
But it also could impact earnings in shipping sectors where the Houthi menace on a key trade lane has led to longer routes and higher rates.
Trump announced the ceasefire during a White House meeting with new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
With Carney by his side, Trump said the Houthis have announced that they no longer want to fight.
&ldquo They just don&rsquo t want to fight, and we will honour that, and we will stop the bombings. They have capitulated,&rdquo Trump said. &ldquo They say they will not be blowing up ships any more.&rdquo
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi confirmed on X that his government brokered the ceasefire.
&ldquo In the future, neither side will target the other, including American vessels, in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping,&rdquo he wrote, referring to the waterway that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
&ldquo The Sultanate of Oman expresses its gratitude to both parties for their constructive approach that led to this welcome outcome, and hopes that it will lead to further progress on many regional issues towards achieving justice, peace, and prosperity for all.&rdquo
The Houthis have not mentioned the deal.
The Iran-backed militant group began assaulting shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden shortly after war broke out between Israel and Hamas in October 2023.

Sats&rsquo WFS opens US$270 million cargo terminal at JFK Airport
This is the airport&rsquo s first new cargo terminal in 30 years, opened in partnership with the port authority and Realterm

[NEW YORK] Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has partnered the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and global investment manager Realterm to open a US$270 million cargo terminal at John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in the US.

This is the airport&rsquo s first new cargo terminal in 30 years, and will help to reduce congestion and streamline operations, said the three entities in a joint press release on Monday (Apr 28).

&ldquo (It) is expected to generate new jobs and economic development opportunities while improving service for industries reliant on high-value cargo such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and perishables,&rdquo they said. This includes 100 permanent new jobs, with a priority on hiring from the local community.

The 350,000 square foot facility will be operated by WFS &ndash a wholly owned subsidiary of inflight caterer and ground handler Sats : S58 0%, and JFK&rsquo s primary cargo handler. It spans 26 acres (10.5 hectares) and replaces two older facilities.

The terminal will include an advanced truck dock management system to help manage the flow of goods in and out of the facility. It uses real-time scheduling, automatic check-ins and digital communication between drivers and dock workers. This not only cuts wait times and congestion, but also reduces noise and emissions in the area, said the three.

The facility is also JFK&rsquo s first dedicated facility for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and perishables, with 3,000 sq ft of cooler space.

On top of that, it features electric forklifts, electric vehicle chargers and an automated united load device system to optimise power usage.

Mike Simpson, WFS gateway services chief executive officer for Americas, said the new cargo terminal marks a new era for the company at one of the main gateways in the US.

&ldquo The facility embodies our dedication to connecting the world through logistics, and embraces new levels of digitalisation and sustainability that will act as a model for other new cargo operations around the world,&rdquo he said.

Port Authority chairman Kevin O&rsquo Toole added that the facility is a &ldquo critical investment in the infrastructure that powers the regional and national economy&rdquo in the US. Currently, the JFK air cargo sector supports more than 93,000 jobs and generates US$11.4 billion in economic activity annually.

&ldquo This modern cargo terminal strengthens (JFK&rsquo s) position as a key gateway for high-value goods and international trade,&rdquo he said.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Wednesday there was little comfort in the U.S. postponing most of its proposed " reciprocal" tariffs, saying the changes had already created great uncertainty around the world.
Wong also said the trade war between the U.S. and China would see trading between the countries grind to a halt, and " the pain will be felt not just by them but by countries everywhere."
While President Donald Trump has postponed the so-called reciprocal tariffs until July, Wong noted the U.S. was still imposing a 10% baseline tariff." No company can comfortably plan long-term investments while knowing that the tariff rates could be changed at a moment' s notice," he said, adding the trade war would accelerate the decoupling of the U.S. and Chinese economies.
" What we are witnessing is the remaking of the global economy &ndash not as one integrated system, but as increasingly bifurcated ecosystems centered around the U.S. and China."

Trade war fallout: Cancellations of Chinese freight ships begin as bookings plummet
- The number of canceled sailings of freight vessels out of China is picking up as ocean carriers attempt to manage a pullback in orders due to the trade war and tariffs.
- A steep decline in containers being shipped to the U.S. will have a big impact on the supply chain, from port to trucking, rail and warehouse economics.
