No merger is not necessary a bad news.  This may dispel away fears of the need to raise funds for M1 takeover.

Enterprise segment picks up consumer slack at StarHub telco remains open to industry consolidation: Maybank
Company has likely paid and taken delivery of the 700MHz spectrum, report adds

[SINGAPORE] StarHub&rsquo s cybersecurity arm, Ensign, continues to deliver double-digit revenue growth. This comes as the telco&rsquo s consumer segment reels from intense competition and customer downtrading, said Maybank Research.

In a report released on Monday (Jul 7), analyst Hussaini Saifee noted that other than Ensign&rsquo s revenue growth, key wins for the enterprise unit &ndash such as the JTC Punggol Digital District &ndash reflect execution strength and are viewed as replicable in other markets.

However, Saifee noted that the enterprise segment&rsquo s structurally lower margins, as compared to the consumer segment, could weigh on group profitability.

StarHub management expects the consumer shift from premium services to value-plans to persist through 2027 and 2028, the analyst noted.   &ldquo Management reiterated that Singapore&rsquo s mobile and fixed broadband markets remain intensely competitive, driven by four mobile network operators and seven mobile virtual network operators.&rdquo

StarHub has gained consumer subscriber share across all three market segments, the premium, digital, and value markets. Saifee noted that the telco has widened its market share gap against M1 to six percentage points.

&ldquo StarHub is open to industry consolidation, but it says there is no timeline or details.&rdquo

There was heightened speculation last year about a possible merger between StarHub and M1. There was also talk that if there was a deal, it would be closed before June 2025, so as to avoid the payment of the 700MHz spectrum fees.

However, Saifee believes that StarHub has likely already taken delivery of the 700MHz spectrum.

It is not clear if StarHub has taken all its allocated lots.

The 700MHz spectrum is a frequency of radio waves used to carry mobile broadband signals.

StarHub&rsquo s management flagged its healthy balance sheet, which has a net leverage of 1.3 times and about S$600 million in cash, as supportive of acquisitive merger and acquisition, said the analyst.

&ldquo That said, we expect cash to decline following the 700MHz spectrum payment.&rdquo

Maybank Research maintained its target price for StarHub at S$1.10, with a recommendation of &ldquo hold&rdquo .
From RHB - In June, StarHub paid for a smaller 20MHz block of the 700MHz 5G spectrum, a move that reflects the cautious operating environment. RHB believes the tight market conditions and monetisation challenges have diluted the business case for the spectrum. Rival M1 also opted for a smaller share.

Q2 Results announcing in August will reflect if they paid the spectrum. My personal opinion is the coming results will not be good taking the spectrum payment into account.

Are they postponing the spectrum fees payment again?

undervalued
Does anyone know if the paid the spectrum fees due by June 30th 2025?
Underpeformed and undervalued tend to come together at the same time. It is often the case that the underperformance results in the share being undervalued which is what creates an opportunity.

Interesting to read about 2 coming IPOs in SGX. Hope Info-Tech Systems listing will lead the way for Ensign to be next this year And NTT (one of Starhub's shareholders) also set to list a Data centre Reit and will look at selling off its stake in Starhub.
More like underperformed

The focus is in its enterprise IT services business that he mentionef is 80% of M1?s enterprise revenue coming from large enterprises. So what is likely up for sales is the consumer mobile business. Anyway their strategy sounded so similar to Starhub's approach.

M1 CEO has clear plans going forward. Keppel doesnt seem like selling M1.

Slowly, Keppel monetising their assets and next could be M1.

Thats a good way to get around it too. Just that IDA may not allow such loophole.
These days 4G is sufficient for most customers. Telcos need to manage their expenditure wisely

Bear in mind that both Starhub and M1 already have a joint venture company Antina that they may use to pay and owned this then allowed both organisations to operate from it. So the merger might not happen too.

M1 & Starhub spectrum payment is due. IDA already extended 1 time.
Now either they pay separately or merge as 1 company to pay 1-time.
so 30th June seems an interesting date to watch out for corporate movement.

From the perspective of shareholders, i wondered if the performance of the CEO and his team is truly delivering value to the investors as what they committed every year.
The CEO started the job on 1st Jan 2021 and share price was $1.31 on 31st Dec 2020.
Last 4 years, total dividend issued was 24.3 cents
Share price now is trading at $1.13 and if a shareholder that holds for last 4.5 years, I think their return is only 1.2% annually (correct me if I am wrong)
So I think putting the same amount into fixed deposits would have better returns? Is that really bringing value to shareholders? 😅
