&lsquo Disease X&rsquo outbreak widens as UN sends health team to Congo

Since Oct 24, 406 cases of the unidentified illness &ndash marked by fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches &ndash have been reported to Dec 5 in the Panzi health zone in Congo&rsquo s southwest, the WHO said on Sunday (Dec 8). That&rsquo s up from 376 cases announced last week. While more than half of the cases involve children under 5, a 50-year-old male traveller hospitalised in Lucca, Italy, is suspected to have recovered from the disease, Il Tempo reported.

Thirty-one deaths have been recorded, down from 79 reported last week, according to the WHO. The outbreak is centred in a remote rural area of Kwango province, where poor road conditions and heavy rains mean it takes nearly 48 hours to reach from Kinshasa. The challenges of accessing the region have hampered efforts to confirm fatalities linked to the illness. All severe cases involve individuals suffering from severe malnutrition, adding complexity to identifying an infectious source.

These challenges, coupled with limited diagnostics in the region, have delayed the identification of the underlying cause,&rdquo the WHO said. &ldquo Teams are collecting samples for laboratory testing, providing a more detailed clinical characterisation of the detected cases, investigating the transmission dynamics, and actively searching for additional cases, both within health facilities and at the community level.&rdquo

Acute pneumonia, influenza, Covid-19, measles and malaria are considered as potential causal factors based on the signs and symptoms of those afflicted, the WHO said, adding that response teams are helping to treat patients and raise awareness of the outbreak within affected communities.

Malaria is common in the area, and it may be causing or contributing to the cases, the United Nations health agency said. &ldquo Laboratory tests are underway to determine the exact cause. At this stage, it is also possible that more than one disease is contributing to the cases and deaths.&rdquo BLOOMBERG

Hong Kong tightens airport health checks amid DR Congo mystery disease outbreak

Hong Kong International Airport steps up health screening measures for all flights arriving from African transit hubs as they brace for risks of an unidentified disease that killed at least 79 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. (Photo: @hkairport X account)

Hong Kong authorities have stepped up health screening measures for all flights arriving from African transit hubs as they brace for risks of an unidentified disease that killed at least 79 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Centre for Health Protection said on Thursday it had sought information about the outbreak from the World Health Organization, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and Congolese health authorities.

According to DRC health authorities, the unknown disease has resulted in 79 deaths and more than 300 infections since late October.

Patients, most of whom were over the age of 15, experienced symptoms including fever, headache, runny nose, cough, breathing difficulties and anaemia.

The centre said the local government had received no reports of people or travellers arriving in Hong Kong from the country with unknown diseases.
While there are no direct flights between DRC and Hong Kong, travellers from the country typically reach the city through African transit hubs, particularly Johannesburg in South Africa and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.

" As a precautionary measure, [the centre has] immediately stepped up health screenings at the airport for passengers on all flights arriving in Hong Kong from the transit hubs."

According to the centre, travellers will undergo temperature checks, with health personnel conducting medical assessments for those with symptoms and referring suspected cases to hospitals for examination.

It also advised those planning to visit DR Congo to maintain vigilant personal and environmental hygiene and avoid crowded places and contact with sick people.

Travellers returning to Hong Kong are urged to seek immediate medical attention if they feel unwell and inform healthcare providers about their travel history.

New York Post

A terrifying new flu-like disease has killed nearly 150 people &mdash mostly teens &mdash and health officials have no idea what it is.

Unidentified flu-like disease hits the Democratic Republic of the Congo

A strange, new illness festering in the heart of Africa has killed 143 people and counting &ndash and most of the victims are teenagers, authorities said.

The unidentified disease has infected at least 300 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since November 10, causing flu-like symptoms including fever, headaches, coughing, breathing difficulties and anemia, that country&rsquo s health ministry told the BBC.

Most of the dead have been between 16 and 18, authorities said.
