Samudera Shipping Line
On May 27, Samudera Shipping Line : S56 -0.61% executive director and CEO Bani Maulana Mulia acquired 6,700 shares of the company at 74.5 cents per share. He maintains a 0.61 per cent direct interest in Samudera Shipping Line, which is primarily engaged in container shipping transportation of cargo in the Asian region.
Bani took the helm as CEO in September 2020 bringing with him nearly 2 decades of industry experience, having started his career in 2001 as a finance officer in Samudera Indonesia.
In 2021, Samudera Shipping Line delivered a significant jump in net profit after tax to US$130.0 million, compared to US$7.3 million in 2020.
Bani said that the group closed the year with a stronger balance sheet with total assets as at the end of 2021 rising to US$571.5 million, from US$342.8 million at the end of 2020.

Yes. Think the freight rates already peaked in 1H of this year, unless there are further disrupting events. But rates will likely be relatively high for 1-2 more years, compared to pre-Covid. In any case, 70~80% of Samudera' s expected profits this year is already locked in via 12-month contracts. These contracts will likely be renewed at lower rates, but still good rates. Bottomline is I don' t think shipping cycle will suddenly switch from current boom to a bust, unless there' s extremely severe recession.
If US manages to normalise inflation to about 2%, it implies there will still be demand growth. If there is a slight recession, demand growth drops to zero or a slight negative. But there is still enough absolute demand to sustain reasonable shipping rates.

Freights cannot keep going up. So if can return to $1 is already a miracle. Now shipment also dropping

Erm... just noticed a mistake...
my guesstimate for 1H 2022 net earnings is S$0.39, not US$0.39. So the NTA per share could go up from S$0.81 to S$1.20 upon release of 1H results. And market price could go up to about $1.20 (~1.0x PB) or about $1.56 (~1.3x PB).

Samudera currently has NTA of S$0.81 per share. So at its all time high price of $1.10, the PB was 1.35. (Samudera likely deserves a much higher PB than 1.3x due to its large net cash, high ROE, high profit margins etc compared to peers.) At current price of $0.815, the PB is 1.005.
Assuming my guesstimate of US$0.39 net earnings for 1H 2022, the NTA/share will increase to about S$1.35 when 1H earnings results is released in late July. So the price could then go up to about $1.35 (at ~1.0x PB) or even higher to about $1.75 (at ~1.3x PB).
Eager to see actual results for 1H.... |

Samudera Indonesia, the parent of Samudera Shipping has been hoping up by leaps and bounds recently. Current price at Rp3,810 as of June 3, 2022. Its only a matter of time the 65 pct owned Singapore subsidiary will follow suit.
