DBS&rsquo Tan Su Shan flags second-order risks from Middle East conflict despite limited exposure
Automotives, shipping and small businesses in focus as the lender tracks knock-on effects from prolonged tensions
[SINGAPORE] DBS has &ldquo very limited&rdquo direct exposure to the Middle East, but a prolonged conflict that keeps oil prices at or above US$100 per barrel could trigger broader second-order risks, chief executive officer Tan Su Shan said on Tuesday (Mar 31).
&ldquo We&rsquo ve done a lot of stress tests with our business heads in terms of first order impact &ndash very little, because our core market is Asia, (and) our exposure to the Middle East is very, very limited,&rdquo said Tan.
&ldquo Having said that, the second order impact &ndash which is around inflation, around consumer slowdown, around supply chains &ndash that can cause problems,&rdquo she added.
The bank is &ldquo watchful&rdquo of sectors such as automotives, oil and gas, and shipping, amid disruptions linked to the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz in the ongoing Iran conflict. Small businesses are also an area of concern, although governments have been stepping up support measures, she said.
Tan was speaking at the lender&rsquo s annual general meeting held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, in response to shareholder questions.
On the macro outlook, she said DBS has not changed its house view of two US Federal Reserve rate cuts in the second half of 2026, despite the ongoing conflict.

Even so, the bank expects to benefit from interest-rate volatility driven by the &ldquo spectre of inflation driven by high oil prices&rdquo , including through hedging its exposure.
&ldquo The interest rate volatility has actually been good for us, even though we do expect rates to (be) cut in the US,&rdquo she said.
&lsquo Structural&rsquo wealth growth
More than 10 shareholders posed questions to DBS&rsquo board at the in-person AGM, covering topics from wealth management performance to capital returns.
Tan said DBS&rsquo wealth clients span about 120 countries, with Singapore and Hong Kong serving as key hubs.
For the 12 months ended Dec 31, 2025, wealth management fees rose 29 per cent to S$2.8 billion, outpacing the 15 per cent increase in overall fee income. Meanwhile, wealth assets under management climbed to S$488 billion, from S$426 billion a year earlier, supported by S$39 billion in net new money.
While AUM is subject to market cycles, the underlying growth trend is structural rather than cyclical, Tan added.
On stock splits, she said DBS has no current plans, noting ongoing efforts by the Singapore Exchange to improve retail participation through reductions in lot sizes.
&ldquo So far, retail shareholding has been going up,&rdquo she said.
Shareholders also queried DBS&rsquo capital return plans beyond its three-year, S$5 billion programme ending in FY2027, as well as progress on its S$3 billion share buyback.
In response, DBS chairman Peter Seah said excess capital would continue to be returned to shareholders through special dividends, buybacks or other means.
A slightly heated exchange emerged towards the end of the session, when a shareholder questioned the bank&rsquo s treasury returns and criticised the price paid for an office floor at The Center in Hong Kong in 2024.
Tan declined to comment on treasury returns, citing competitiveness, while Seah said the property purchase was not speculative and priced in line with the market.
As the exchange continued, another shareholder intervened, criticising the disruption and calling for the individual to yield the floor.
All resolutions were subsequently passed, including the re-election of Seah as a board director.
Shares of DBS : D05 -0.12% closed down 0.12 per cent or S$0.07 at S$56.90. Year to date, the stock is up 1.1 per cent.
Guess her speech did not have positive impact on the share price this afternoon, since it close 7 cents lower at $56.90

DBS joins buzzing India IPO space with mandate in US$1 billion offering
Investment banks in the country earn a record US$417 million in underwriting fees for public listings in 2025
[MUMBAI] DBS Group has entered India&rsquo s buoyant equity capital market (ECM), marking a push into  one of the world&rsquo s busiest venues for share sales.
Singapore&rsquo s biggest lender secured its first mandate in the country from Manipal Health Enterprises, which filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on Tuesday (Mar 24) that is expected to raise about US$1 billion. Temasek Holdings is the largest shareholder in both the hospital chain and DBS.
A DBS spokesperson confirmed the development, saying the bank has expanded into equity capital markets under its merchant banking licence in India and now has a fully operational investment banking platform in the country.
India&rsquo s fundraising activity surged to more than US$22 billion last year, ranking as the fourth-largest market globally.
Proceeds from IPOs in 2026 may reach a record for a third consecutive year, supported by a strong pipeline and robust investor demand, according to investment bankers from companies including Goldman Sachs Group and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
DBS holds &ldquo strong conviction in the long‑ term prospects, continuous evolution and global integration of the Indian capital markets&rdquo , according to the spokesperson.
This expansion is a &ldquo natural progression&rdquo that reinforces its long-term commitment to the Indian market where the bank undertakes corporate, consumer and wealth banking, the spokesperson added.
Positive on India growth
DBS&rsquo new ECM desk will cater to Indian corporates, financial sponsors and institutional clients, the spokesperson said. It plans to offer a comprehensive suite of investment banking services across debt and equity, and will use its Asian distribution network to connect Indian issuers with a broader investor base.
Sanjog Kusumwal, an ECM banker from DBS&rsquo Singapore operations, will relocate to India to lead investment banking and build out the onshore ECM franchise, while also expanding fixed-income origination, DBS said.
The lender has been positive about growth in India and willing to commit capital to the market. It took over Lakshmi Vilas Bank in 2020, the first time Indian authorities turned to a foreign lender to bail out a struggling local rival.
Former CEO Piyush Gupta is chairman of state investor Temasek International&rsquo s Indian operations, after retiring from DBS last year.
Investment banks in India earned a record US$417 million in underwriting fees for IPOs last year, according to capital markets data provider LSEG.
The average fee paid to bankers for IPOs rose to 1.86 per cent of a deal&rsquo s value, versus 1.67 per cent a year earlier, the data show. BLOOMBERG

[BENGALURU] India&rsquo s Manipal Health Enterprises filed for an up to US$1.17 billion initial public offering on Tuesday (Mar 24), betting on rising demand for speciality care even as the domestic equities market faces volatility amid fragile global sentiment.
The initial public offering comprises a fresh issue to raise US$852.2 million and an offer for sale of about 43.2 million shares by existing investors such as Singapore&rsquo s Temasek, US investment firm TPG, Manipal Education and Novo Holdings, according to its draft prospectus.
Existing investors plan to sell up to 30 billion rupees (S$410 million) worth of shares, according to two sources familiar with the matter. They did not want to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
Demand for specialised healthcare has surged in the world&rsquo s most populous country and is a key driver of growth, analysts say, a trend that is increasingly attracting private and foreign investment from firms such as Blackstone, Novo Nordisk and KKR.
India remains an undersupplied healthcare market, with strong tailwinds from rising insurance penetration, industry consolidation favouring larger players and higher per capita incomes driving demand for quality care, said Sanjay Singh, head of investment banking at InCred Capital, adding the IPO is likely to see strong interest from both institutional and retail investors.
Manipal&rsquo s listed rival, Apollo Hospitals said revenue from complex care such as cardiology, oncology, and neurology rose 22.6 per cent in the December 2025 quarter, highlighting growing demand for advanced medical care.
Manipal&rsquo s IPO plans come amid a sharp slump in India&rsquo s equities market, with global risk-off sentiment, tightening liquidity and sustained foreign outflows weighing.
Foreign investors have withdrawn more than US$11.65 billion from Indian stocks so far in 2026, including more than US$10.17 billion in March alone, according to depository data.
Manipal&rsquo s lay of the land
As of Sep 30, Manipal had about 12,367 operational beds, while Apollo, valued at roughly US$10.88 billion, has nearly 10,000 and targets 13,000 beds by fiscal 2030.
For the six months to September 2025, Manipal Health posted a consolidated net profit of 5.61 billion rupees and revenue of 47.13 billion rupees.
The company plans to use IPO proceeds to repay debt and to fund its acquisition of Sahyadri Hospitals, which it bought for US$700 million.
The $5 billions is primarily targeting good small and mid caps compaines.
DBS is well supported by the Singapore government $5billion fund plus family offices support due to the requirements.
If the Fed will to hike interest rate due to the ME war, DBS will shoot through the roof.

It may go down to test the 200MA (~52.70) if market conditions remains bearish.
Since you have bought at 57.40, let' s hope 200MA serves as strong support.
