Can Sembcorp keep its head above water amid Sembcorp Marine&rsquo s weak H1 performance?
It&rsquo s counting on its utilities arm to buoy profits.
Sembcorp Industries&rsquo utilities unit will take the center stage going forward, as analysts believe the segment will drive earnings growth and cushion the blow from the marine segment&rsquo s sustained weakness.
According to a report by RHB, the company&rsquo s utilities segment continues to be its primary growth driver.
&ldquo We expect its India thermal power business to do better in 2H16 from a better plant load factor as well as the commencement of two short-term power purchase agreements (PPAs),&rdquo RHB noted.
&ldquo Commercial operations date (COD) of the 660 megawatt (MW) Unit 3 and Unit 4 will be in 2H16. The company is also actively looking for long-term PPAs,&rdquo it added.

I beg to differ. Their utilities segment had been hit badly on the local front too. Plus the news that their india plant stop work due to some issue (cant rem) and the once profitable business marine. Their only hope is expanding overseas utilites/clean energy but it come w a risk too due to different laws.

I guess we have to wait. Their utilities segment is the only bright spot. I bought at 2.57. I also kena blue black with my US shares. But no worries all dividend paying stocks. Willing to wait. Good Luck.

There is a possibility Keppel corp may take over the 60% stake of SCM from SCI .
Believe poor results for the next few Qs is not unexpected !
anyway, share buybacks are not a good way. This is seem as protecting ur own shares, and usually, shares bought back are easily abused, by ways of performance shares.
Give back dividends if the com have excess money, unless they are apple or microsoft who have huge tons of money not able to be utilised efficiently.Let the market re-rate the company fairly is better.

Brother, u might be right, I' m not sure. But I' m trying to play safe (kena blue black so often already) n q-ing at around lower 2.50s. Got a few lots at 2.70 earlier n 2.59 more recently . Now have to average. Of course it there' s a rebound, I' d be very happy to unload first. Fingers cross n hope u n brother Serious are right ....

Brother Qanghoo i agree with serious. If you look at the volume today very low as compared to yesterday 6 mil plus. I think there will be a rebound soon. Big boys just waiting, hentak kaki, as of now. But as always DYODD pls.

Are u sure or u are consoling urself? Before dow collapsed 394 pts abt a wk ago, this one trading usually not below 265. After that, even when dow has stabilised, this one seem to be finding new lows n not knowing how to recover.

They dont really own big stakes , they are big sharehoilders compare to retail invetors only. They will stop selling or have nothing to sell one day. The facts is they sell , others are buying from them at this level which present values.

Bought some at 2.56 again. some funds are selling but there is a limit for them to sell .

This is an old article by NextInsight dated 2 Feb 16. But, we do see a continuation of selling down by shortists in the Singapore stocks market, some of them which are the big boys. I like the last part in the article which quoted Warren Buffett' s wise saying:
" It' s (short-selling) has ruined a lot of people. You can go broke doing it. It' s a whole lot easier to make money on the long side. You can' t make big money shorting because the risk of big losses means you can' t make big bets."
