xMEMS&rsquo breakthrough micro-speakers debut in earbuds at CES

Both Creative Labs and Noble Audio are showing off true wireless headphones that incorporate solid-state MEMS micro-speakers. We gave them a listen.

At this year&rsquo s CES, Santa Clara-based xMEMS Labs has been showing off newly released, first-generation earbuds from Creative Labs and Noble Audio utilizing the developer&rsquo s  breakthrough MEMS micro-speakers.

What is MEMS (short for &ldquo micro electrical mechanical systems&rdquo ) technology all about? We&rsquo re talking about &ldquo microscopic moving structures inside a silicon chip,&rdquo detailed Mike Housholder, the company&rsquo s marketing and business development VP. &ldquo They actuate to move air, creating pressure which generates sound. There are some actual moving parts in these microchips, but their flexing is so minute it can&rsquo t be seen by the naked eye.&rdquo

Those all-silicon solid-state components deliver better reliability, part-to-part consistency, and equal-to-better (eventually) pricing, Housholder argues. &ldquo And for the consumer, we think [the MEMS speaker] has the most accurate reproduction you&rsquo re going to get.&rdquo (We covered  xMEMS&rsquo MEMS micro-speakers  in detail earlier this year.)

&ldquo Almost every component in electronic devices has moved to solid state, with the exception of the &lsquo coil and magnet&rsquo driven dynamic speaker,&rdquo Housholder noted. But with its MEMS technology, xMEMS aims to put the kibosh on that last holdout.

The best of the new MEMS-fitted earbuds I tried in the developer&rsquo s CES suite were the Aurvana Ace 2 ($149) and&ndash almost as good&ndash the $129 Aurvana Ace, both from Creative Labs, which demonstrated a well-balanced, natural, and effortlessly  detailed performance on a wide variety of music, from pop (Olivia Rodrigo) to cool jazz (Miles Davis) and even bombastic classical (Carl Orff&rsquo s  Carmina Burana.)

But had I looked under the hood, I would have seen that the buds&rsquo two-way coaxial design was actually a bit of new-tech-meets-old-tech. That&rsquo s because buds are utilizing xMEMS&rsquo Cowell-model MEMS chip to produce the scintillating high frequencies, while  conventional  dynamic drivers tackle the bass and mid-range duties.

That will change next year, when the chip designer introduces yet another and equally staggering breakthrough in its Cypress-series MEMS: an ultrasonic signal coding and decoding process that could boost the micro-speaker&rsquo s bass response by a factor of 40, meaning it wouldn&rsquo t need help from a friend.

Improved low-frequency sound pressure levels would allow the Cypress chip to support active noise cancellation, which requires 140 decibels of signal-cancelling muscle power to do its job.  The Cypress series also makes the micro-speaker technology ripe for high resolution and spatial audio, says the developer.

Audio delivery schemes riding on ultrasound waves have been a research topic since the 1960s, and until now, they&rsquo ve never achieved a performance level good enough for broad audience appeal. But a prototype Cypress micro-speaker I got to hear kicked plenty of butt.

Noble Audio&rsquo s MEMS-equipped Falcon Max are exclusive to the Japanese market, whle their FoKus Triumph will be available worldwide.

Jonathan Takiff/Foundry

&ldquo Cypress uses a modulator to generate an amplitude modulated ultrasonic wave carrier that faithfully follows the amplitude of the intended audio signal,&rdquo Housholder explained, &ldquo and a demodulator to synchronously demodulate the ultrasonic wave, transferring the acoustic energy down to the baseband, which is the audio signal. So we&rsquo re now using ultrasound as the pressure generator instead of just pushing air, which is the conventional mechanism for generating sound.&rdquo

revolutionise is too big a word.  dont think xmems can fit the bill.

mems speakers/earbud suppose to have some advantages:  cheap to produce, consistance qty, smaller, less power needed to drive.

but creative' s implementation doesn' t show these :  the earbuds are big compared to other tws, sound is nothing specticular, not cheap too.

the worst part is because mems cannot produce enough bass, creative use shortcut - dynamic driver to boost the bass.  which deficted the advantages of mems.

at the moment, other leading tws makers are using dynamic drivers and balance amature , and the sound quality is good, size is not big too.

Just wait for sales figures for the Xmems earbuds.
Just as Ev has  revolutionised the car industry, Xmem based earbuds will revolutionise the headphone industries.
Although Creative does not own the Xmem patent, they have the first mover advantage as they are the first to just launch the Xmem earbugs worldwide.
This I believe will have a positive effect on their bottomline as it can' t be worse than the current state of affair they are in.
Just be patient and wait for them to provide updates on the Aurvana Ace sales data

I tested the first wireless earbuds with xMEMs drivers, and they' ve set a new standard for me
I was fully prepared to call xMEMS a gimmick. But the Aurvana Ace 2 earbuds impressed me in ways I never thought possible for a pair priced at $150.

it is too late now.

most of the competitors have their own spatial audio technology, and are better. than sfxi.

the main difference between crestive and them is that they release the technolgy quietly.

creative boast a lot, and get some half pass 6 websites to give so called comex awards.  creative marketed it as comex award winning products.

if sfxi is good, it should be widely used now, dont need to collabrste.

hopefully the new team think out of box and push for collaborations, otherwise those who bought above 5/- +++ will be holding it for a long time albeit if the company still can be relevant if financially drained. best just get large tech companies to buy is the best option and the patents nonetheless are worthy of quite good money. Win win for all shareholders and not let down the founder

Creative Technology launches first audio products since founder Sim Wong Hoo&rsquo s death

HOME-GROWN tech company Creative Technology : C76 0% has launched two wireless earbuds &ndash its first audio products released since the death of the company&rsquo s founder and chairman, Sim Wong Hoo, in January.

Called the Creative Aurvana Ace and Creative Aurvana Ace 2, they are the result of a partnership inked in August between Creative and xMEMS Labs, makers of solid-state speakers.

These earbuds &ndash S$189 for the Aurvana Ace and S$219 for the Aurvana Ace 2 &ndash feature the micro-electromechanical system, solid-state speaker technology from xMEM Labs. (The latest AirPods by Apple start at S$169.)

The Aurvana products follow on the legacy of the company&rsquo s founder, who made a name for himself and put Creative Technology on the world map, particularly with the Sound Blaster sound cards, which became a de facto standard for audio on personal computers.

However, the company&rsquo s financial performance has been on the decline in recent years.

Just last month, Creative issued a bourse filing to report that it has booked pre-tax losses for three years running. It recorded a net loss of US$6.1 million for its second-half year ended on Jun 30, 2023.

Creative Technology files notice of 3 straight years of losses

CREATIVE Technology : C76 +0.63% has given notice that it has recorded pre-tax losses for three consecutive years.

It however meets the financial entry criteria to avoid being placed on the Singapore Exchange&rsquo s (SGX) watch list, as its six-month average daily market capitalisation as at Wednesday (Oct 11) was S$110.3 million.

According to SGX listing rules, mainboard-listed companies will be placed on the watch list under the financial entry criteria if they record pre-tax losses for the three most recently completed consecutive financial years, and fail to maintain an average daily market cap of at least S$40 million over the last six months.

Companies on the watch list must take active steps to satisfy the financial requirements within 36 months from the date they are placed on the list.

That means recording a consolidated pre-tax profit for the most recently completed financial year, based on the latest full-year consolidated audited accounts, and having an average daily market cap of S$40 million or more over the last six months. Otherwise, they will be delisted from the SGX, or have their trading suspended with a view to delisting.

Creative Technology narrowed its losses in the second half ended Jun 30 this year after implementing cost-cutting measures. It posted a US$6.1 million net loss, an improvement from the year-ago loss of US$12.2 million.
