Suu Kyi to lead Myanmar ?!......

In Myanmar, the president is chosen from three candidates nominated by the two houses of parliament and the military, which holds a quarter of the seats in the bicameral chamber. The president then forms the government. There is no prime minister.

Suu Kyi has forged ties with Shwe Mann, the speaker of parliament, ousted by President Thein Sein from the leadership of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in August.

Suu Kyi' s ties with Shwe Mann, a former general, sparked speculation that the NLD might select him as a presidential nominee but she distanced herself from the idea during the interview.

" We will have a civilian member of our party," Suu Kyi said about a potential nominee.

" It' s not a matter of preference. It is a matter of what is appropriate and it would be more appropriate for us to have a bona fide civilian, NLD candidate for president."

RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE

Suu Kyi expressed worries over an increase in anti-Muslim sentiment in Myanmar and religion being used for political means, saying that there were, " very, very worrying signs of religious intolerance which we did not have in this country before."

The NLD has been criticised for not putting up any Muslim candidates in its field of over 1,100 parliamentary and regional assembly hopefuls, but Suu Kyi has remained quiet on the issue.

During the interview, Suu Kyi said that the one Muslim candidate the NLD tried to field was disqualified by the electoral commission.

When asked if she was sorry about not having any Muslim candidates, she said that she was sorry that religion had become an issue in the election.

Nationalist monks, particularly the Committee for the Protection of Race and Religion, better known as Ma Ba Tha, have sharply criticised the NLD for what they see as its failure to sufficiently protect Buddhism.

Suu Kyi said that this worried her, but that it was difficult for her party to fight back because the constitution forbids the mixing of religion and politics.

" It is a fact that this government certainly has not taken much action against those who are using religion to attack the NLD although that is against the law," she said, when asked if government policy had contributed to the increasing role of religion in politics.

One of the most outspoken leaders of Ma Ba Tha, Wirathu, endorsed president Thein Sein, and said the NLD members " were full of themselves" and unlikely to win the election.

Suu Kyi reiterated her defence to criticism that she has said little about Myanmar' s Rohingya Muslims, around 140,000 of whom remain stateless in Rakhine state following clashes with Rakhine Buddhists in 2012.

She is scheduled to visit the state later this month.

" I have talked about it, but people are not interested," Suu Kyi said.

" Because what they want me to do is to condemn the Rakhine. I can' t condemn the Rakhine for the simple fact that the Rakhine have many grievances as well."

China Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Burma Democracy Icon Aung San Suu Kyi......

Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) meets Myanmar' s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Jun 11, 2015.

and.....now Myanmar President Thein Sein meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ........both China & Japan seems very aggresive in Mekong Five

which Myanmar is part of it.....due the great potential growth & rich natural  resources......

Japan pledges $6.1 bln aid to ' Mekong Five' in bid for influence

Jul. 4, 2015, 3:36 AM

'Mekong Five' leaders are welcomed by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (3rd R) prior to the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo, on July 4, 2015

Sasahara' Mekong Five' leaders are welcomed by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (3rd R) prior to the 7th Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo, on July 4, 2015

Tokyo (AFP) - Japan on Saturday pledged $6.1 billion in financial aid to the " Mekong Five" countries as it pushes infrastructure exports and courts influence in a region where rival China has an increasing presence.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe unveiled the pledge at a summit with his counterparts from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam -- fast-growing economies through which the lower section of the Mekong river flows.

" Japan will implement support worth around 750 billion yen ($6.1 billion) in official development assistance for the next three years," Abe told a news conference following the seventh annual Japan-Mekong summit.

" The Mekong region,  which has vast demand for infrastructure, is one of our most important areas," Abe said.

" Japan will contribute to infrastructure development of the region in both quality and quantity," he added. " The Mekong region and Japan are partners that will develop together."

It was not immediately clear if the pledge included previously-earmarked Japanese financial assistance, or whether it was made up entirely of newly-allocated funds.

" The Mekong region is the most dynamic economic centre, but there still is room for huge growth," Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha told the news conference.

The meeting came as the leading Nikkei business daily said Friday that three Japanese companies had secured an order worth over 32 billion baht ($947 million) to equip a railway linking  Bangkok with nearby suburbs.

The Japanese government plans to offer loans to cover part of the cost, the newspaper said, a common sweetener that helps clients afford these kind of big-ticket projects.

Abe has upped efforts to sell highways, train systems and power plants around the world, a key element in his bid to bolster the economy and Japan' s standing abroad.

- Influence -

Beijing' s growing financial muscle, as well as its increasing willingness to throw its diplomatic weight around, have added urgency to Japan' s efforts to step up engagement in the battle for regional sway.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said in November at a summit in Myanmar that Beijing' s strategic partnership with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) grouping was entering a " diamond decade leading to broader and deeper cooperation" .

Then in March, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China hoped to boost trade with ASEAN countries to $500 billion this year and $1 trillion in 2020.

Beijing' s new Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has also upped the stakes, rivalling the Tokyo-backed Asian Development Bank and offering the kind of financial firepower rapidly-developing countries are keen to tap.

In a bid to counter the Chinese move, Abe in May announced a $110 billion investment plan for infrastructure projects in Asia, including in the " Mekong Five" states.

Japan is keen to be seen as the benevolent giant in the region and has worked hard to burnish a reputation as the nation bold enough to push back against China in territorial and other disputes.

Tokyo has its own spat with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea, but is increasingly vocal over China' s ambitions to control almost the whole of the South China Sea.

Vietnam is one of a number of countries that have territorial disputes with Beijing over this busy shipping area.

Siding with Tokyo and Hanoi, the participants jointly expressed " concerns" over the territorial disputes involving Beijing, saying in a statement that they " will further complicate the situation and erode trust and confidence and may undermine regional peace, security and stability."

But the meeting avoided touching upon other sensitive issues for the region, including a growing migrant crisis.

Some 100 Myanmar and Japanese people staged a rally in light rain over Myanmar President Thein Sein' s prescence at the summit, demanding that the Myanmar government release all political prisoners.

I don' t deny Yoma itself is a good promising stock.

But,

Myanmar Elections is indeed worrying.

We Singaporeans take peace and stability for granted.

In other countries. Political stability not so easy. Too complex and too complicated . Nowadays , those who give up power too easily they think they will be given " empathy " ? Look at EGYPT. ENOUGN SAID.

do you find them stupid......

Yoma Strategic Holdings&rsquo (Yoma) partner, Digicel Group, has entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with edotco Group (subsidiary of Axiata Group) to dispose of its 75% interest in Digicel Asian Holdings (DAH) at an agreed enterprise value of US$221m. DAH is a joint venture firm between Yoma (25% stake) and Digicel (75%), which owns Myanmar Tower Company and is involved in development, construction and leasing of telecommunication towers in Myanmar.

Based on the agreed sale price, Yoma&rsquo s equity stake is worth an estimated US$20m above its book value. While Yoma is evaluating its options and is in discussions with edotco, a sale of its stake at this point is uncertain. In our view, a sale will be the optimal outcome as it will further streamline the firm&rsquo s businesses. Stock price performance has been muted lately, which we believe is due to the uncertain political climate. Yoma is trading at an attractive 0.5 times revalued net asset value.
