They acquired Sabeco previously at high valuations so would rather that they find the right window to spin off to be additive to shareholders than just to get it out of the portfolio. The problem lies in their communication and management of market expectations around beerco spin-off. The expectation is that is the catalyst but it may not be depending on the valuations and they should have only telegraph to market when there is a high level of certainty and push it out shortly after rather than to drag over years with multiple start-stops only to disappoint market. It then creates fatigue among shareholders and those on the side.

According to Thai media reports on October 2nd, Thai beer giant ThaiBev, under the leadership of CEO Su Huarong, has unveiled its ambitious " PASSION 2030" strategy. The core goal is to further consolidate its leading position in the ASEAN beverage market and achieve steady and sustainable growth. The group' s four pillar businesses cover spirits, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, and food.

Within the group, BeerCo' s leadership team also outlined its future plans. The group' s beer business head stated that despite fierce competition in the beer market, with new players constantly entering and seeking alliances, such as the partnership between Carabao and Qingdao Beer, Thai Breweries Group firmly believes that beer is a long-term game. Leveraging its strong brand portfolio in Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar, BeerCo is confident it can maintain its growth momentum.

BeerCo CEO Chia Hin Huat stated that the core of " PASSION 2030" is the simultaneous growth of sales, revenue, and profits for the beer business, ultimately leading to a listing of BeerCo on the Singapore Stock Exchange. Although the IPO plan has been delayed, the goal remains unchanged it' s just a matter of waiting for the right time.

By 2026, Thai Breweries Group will invest 2 billion baht to expand beer production capacity, focusing on Kandal Province, Cambodia. The new plant will have an initial production capacity of 50 million liters and is expected to begin production within two months. Cambodia' s per capita beer consumption is approximately 50 liters per year, double that of Thailand, making it considered a high-potential market. In Myanmar, BeerCo has increased its production capacity from 50 million liters to 150 million liters since 2019, with sales exceeding expectations for five consecutive years. The company plans to triple its production capacity in the future. In Vietnam, Saigon Beer maintains its leading position in the market. Faced with strict local policies restricting alcohol consumption, the company has launched new low-alcohol products with a 4.3% alcohol content to attract Generation Z and price-sensitive consumers. These include 333 Beer and Saigon Light Beer in 250ml cans. At the same time, Sabeco increased its stake in its joint venture, Sabibeco, from 21.8% to 65.9%, further strengthening its production capacity and adding the Sagota brand to its product portfolio.

A senior executive from the beer division of Thai Breweries Group stated that by 2025, the group' s Elephant Beer had held the top spot in the Thai market for eight consecutive months, with a market share of approximately 40%, a 2 percentage point lead over its competitors. The secret to its success lies in innovative packaging, cross-industry marketing in the music, sports, and food industries, and a strong distribution network. The group will continue to deepen this strategy through 2026.

Overall, mainly affected by the slowdown in consumption in the Vietnamese market, the Group' s beer business generated revenue of 96.497 billion baht in the first nine months of this year, the same as the same period last year. However, total sales volume still increased by 4.8%, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) reached 12.573 billion baht, a year-on-year increase of 4%.

Thailand must be desperate to be willing to make such a change given the negative historic perception. Such a bad situation there right now.

It is a good thing for ThaiBev though. Will make a positive difference.

RHB lowers ThaiBev&rsquo s TP to 65 cents on &lsquo minor weakness&rsquo in 9MFY2025 results

Alfie Yeo of RHB Bank Singapore has lowered his target price on Thai Beverage (ThaiBev) to 65 cents from 69 cents as the group&rsquo s 9MFY2025 results stood below expectations.

For the nine months ended June 30, ThaiBev&rsquo s revenue fell by 0.4% y-o-y to 258 billion baht ($10.26 billion) with declines seen across its spirits, beer, non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) and food businesses. ThaiBev&rsquo s ebitda of 45 billion baht, down by 4% y-o-y, also fell below expectations. The lower ebitda was dragged by the spirits, NAB and food businesses due to higher marketing expenditure, brand investment and higher raw material and labour costs. Ebitda margin fell by 0.6 percentage points y-o-y to 17.4%

Given the &ldquo slightly disappointing&rdquo revenue and ebitda, Yeo has lowered his earnings estimates for the FY2025, FY2026 and FY2027 by 1%, 2% and 4% to 338.28 billion baht, 337.89 billion baht and 338.13 billion baht respectively. The lower estimates account for weaker beer volume sales from Vietnam and a slight decline in spirits volume sales.

Yeo has not made any changes to his margin assumptions as ebitda margin is largely in line with his estimates.

In line with his earnings adjustment, Yeo&rsquo s value of ThaiBev&rsquo s core business, excluding Sabeco, is lowered by 3% to 57 cents from 59 cents.

&ldquo Our value of Sabeco based on market value was reduced to 6 cents from 8 cents previously, due to Sabeco&rsquo s share price decline on the Ho Chi Minh stock exchange,&rdquo Yeo writes in his Sept 1 report. &ldquo Our intrinsic value of ThaiBev before applying our environmental, social and governance (ESG) premium is hence reduced from 67 cents to 63 cents, resulting in a 6% reduction in our target price.&rdquo

That said, Yeo remains positive on the group as he expects its long-term growth momentum to continue, driven by the penetration of sales points and stronger tourism-led consumption over the next few years. Furthermore, ThaiBev has strong market leadership in Thailand and Vietnam and the group&rsquo s beer business in both countries is undergoing a recovery with an expected pick up in demand.
