But 50 yrs on, has the co. outlived its strategic purpose?  In the earlyr yrs of independence and economic development, the govt had to introduce many economic  initiatives and build the engines for growth.  Other state giants include the Development Bank of Singapore, Keppel Shipyard.  and Sembawang Shipyard.  While most of them have successfully reinvented themselves, sadly, NOL is struggling, partly because of the oversupply situation with no foreseeable end in sight yet.  |

Latest BDI reading at 732 is less than 1/3 of the recent high of 2330 in Dec 13.  Will be difficult for NOL to turn around in this kind of environment. |

Not sure whether it&rsquo s fair to blame the bank or the &lsquo experts&rsquo , some of whom might have presented a skewed analysis for ulterior motives, for OCBC&rsquo s poor share price performance.  Only time will tell if the bank&rsquo s strategy in the WHB acquisition is sound or misplaced.  DBS paid almost double the P/B OCBC is doing for DHB and had to eventually write off > 10% of the investment.  Does anyone recall whether DBS had received such negative assessments at the time of the acquisition or were they even lauded for having made a great and/or bargain investment? |

There are many others which seem to be similarly controlled.  See HS, Midas, Tiong Woon, are just a few that come to mind.  Midas & TW have buy recommendations, but price seem  to gostan.  That' s why I am strongly convinced that the market is strongly controlled by CKs.

DBS paid 9.6 bil for DHB (compared to 1.6 bil paid for POSB).  They had to eventually bite the bullet and write off over a bil.  Even at 8.6 bil, P/B wld be greater than what OCBC is paying for WHB.  I believe the majority owners of OCBC, known to be more conservative-inclined, know what they are doing.  The ' experts' are probably pressing the price down to collect at cheaper price.  But bcos they are doing that, we better wait to tompang at lower price.  The actual value of OCBC shares may be considerably higher.  Shares of its GEH is now trading close to $23, abt 20% higher than in May 13,  before the first FOMC tapering announcement was made.  On the other hand, OCBC is now trading at $9.40, abt 20% lower than in May 13.  Perhaps at $9.00, it wld be a good price to capture. |

Cld it be pumped to be dumped?  With the BDI at < 1000 for an extended period of time, and now close to multi-month lows, when will NOL sail back to profitable shores?  If one has a lot of spare cash to sink into NOL,  it will rise  when calmer waters return in time to come (perhaps in a few yrs?).  But the opportunity cost  looks high.  So, for most investors, might as well seek out better opportunities elsewhere. |

Correction.   LCD Global was not started by the Lums. Lum Chang is the family business. LCDG was Eu Yan Sang. It was taken over by LC round abt 25 - 30 yrs ago, I think.   The Chinese medicine part of the business was subsequently re-sold to the Eus and eventually re-listed under the original name EYS.   Apparently LC bought the original EYS to get hold of EYS' sizeable property holdings in the Chinatown area (not sure if this part was gossip only - cld anyone else shed some light?). |

Maybe the Lums are waiting for a competing offer from KWS .... and sell out at a big gain instead.  Remember YHS' case some yrs back? |

Current preditions have it that an EN, which appears to be more and more likely to happen, wld be weak to moderate rather than severe.  Also, the impact on loss in catches wld be mitigated by    expected resilience in fishmeal and fish oil prices.  Still, Copeinca' s profits are likely to be affected.  That' s why expect   CFG' s share price to be capped for sometime.

CFG is definitely not schip. Schips are those with ops out of PRC mainland. CFG has ops in various parts of the world and exports to PRC mainland. Its parent PARD has been listes in Spore for abt 20 yrs, long before a lot of the con schip came in. Only problem with CFG is it had got into a lot of trouble with the Russian anti-monopoly authority last two years and also had problem with its Namibian ops. This was why it is trying to re-invent itself by moving into the Peruvian fishmeal industry. Unfortunately, the extremely high transformational cost means it is now saddled with massive debts.   Moreover, with El Nino likely around the corner, it' s ' sway' luck continues for now. But given time, it should be an investor darling in the future. For now, there are probably more downside than upside catalysts.
