Ang moh also no political sense.  He think he can do ASEAN link like HK-Shanghai?  It' s so different.  One country two system much easier to get things going.  ASEAN so many countries, every one jaga its own backside.  How to work?

Estab trading links among ASEAN exchanges?  Are they buying another white elephant?  This ang moh really no sense of reality.  Already mkt here is so dead.  How many % are retailers?  Trading link is only for BBs .... ie, if they are interested.  But more probably they are more interested to pump n dump local pennies and suck in the unsuspecting retailers.

I' m not vested at present.  Just hoping that the cks dump more and force the px by another, say 10-10%.  Will jeep if px go down to < 2.30.  Looks a good bet for the long term.    The PRC mkt is so vast n holds quite a lot of potential.  Even in this low period growth there, 7%+ is the envy of many other countries in the world.

Result already out.  They usually report b4 mkt opens.  Profit down 36% due to deferred rental revenue in Airport City Development, the sale of 11 properties in Japan to GLP J-Reit, and a weaker Japanese yen against the US dollar.  Actually, looks like co is doing OK, but depends who wants to pump n who wants to dump.  A few days ago, pumped up nearly 10% now reverse by abt same %.

If this has been  hypothesised  doubt it' s credible.    Qn is does UE hold  and/or is engaged in any business that is of  national, security  or strategic or some special interest that makes it a risk to pass on to foreign control.  Other than the three local banks, SPH n STE, don' t think there many others with such definitions.  Afterall, APB n Stats have gone/is going off without issue.  Don' t think there is any problem with UE too.

If u ask me, I' d think trading on insider info seems very prevalent.  I mean, all the recent counters that have come up with market-sensitive news over the last yr or so had seem substantial movements in share px n volume just prior to announcements.  N prominent among them seems to be the GLCs.  SingPost (don' t know what has happened to police report already), CapitalMall Asia, Kepland amongst others.  Regulator seems always lock the gates only after the horse has bolted.  Maybe time to seriously review the whole structure of regulation n enforcement.

Get hold the cks phone line n we can make as much.  Why the extraordinary movements over the last few days n no query?  I recall one newspaper article sometime back asking the qn " Astitute trading or insider trading" .  In a nutshell, what it was implying was whether people were anticipating corporate movements with foresight or trading on insider info.  Decide for yourself.

I' m all for a fare that balances affordability n sustainability. Elderly people like us still remember how STC (Singapore Traction Co - at that time, the only public bus coy if I remember correctly) had to fold up in 1973 as they found ops unstainable. But to have the audacity to ask for (n worse be granted) a fare increase in the face of rising profits seems hard to unjustify. As a public listed coy, one cannot fault shareholders for raising profit expectations especially given the coy' s monopolistic n protected position. So, share px is chased up when profits rise. This in turn fuel even higher pressure on the coy management to improve profitability further to meet the ever rising expectations of shareholders. It' s a vicious cycle that consumers seem to be the real losers. Actually, it wld appear that govt is subsidising dividends through funding part of the bus fleet. So, best to take the coy private. That way, govt can continue to subsidise ops more euitably for the benefit of consumers. N tax payers will have little reason, if any, to gripe abt funding of bus fleet, etc.

lifeisgood      ( Date: 24-Jan-2015 13:06) Posted:

Government should consider privatising SMRT. This way can subsidise train commuters just like HDB subdises HDB flats (khaw said losing billions every year in HDB)

Thx for ur economics lesson for the general benefit of the investing public. My personal view though is that there may be a speculative element to the USD n interbank-rate spikes. My thinking is that, while in theory people wld shift deposits/funds to where cost of funds are most attractive, a lot of times, the trouble, costs n currency-fluctuation risks involved might make doing so a less attractive investment option vis-a-viz other investment opportunities   n instruments, especially for the investment-savvy, notwithstanding thw power of the USD as a global reserve currency.  Also, given that so many other CBs, from Europe to the Far East, are flooding the mkt globally with QEs, I had expressed to my stock broker n friends that I not only doubt as to how far SIBOR might increase over the next couple of yrs, but also how much room the FED has in the same time horizon to manoeuvre its FED n related rates.   I respect ur views n ur willingness to share with others.  What I&rsquo m putting across are my personal thoughts.  I wdn&rsquo t like to spark an unpleasant forum debate on the issue (cos I&rsquo ve seen far too many of them in this forum).  Let&rsquo s agree to disagree n share our views healthily, shall we?

stockhero      ( Date: 24-Jan-2015 08:23) Posted:

Since nobody here has attempted to explain the recent rise in SIBOR, I will give it a try.  pardon me if i have not got my economics right :))

As the US economy shows more signs of recovery, expectations of a rise in interest rates in 2015 are increasing. Higher interest rates in the US will lead to an increase in hot money inflows and a decrease in hot money outflows and hence an increase in the demand for US dollars and a decrease in the supply of US dollars resulting in a rise in the exchange rate. Therefore, expectations of a rise in interest rates in the US will lead to expectations of an increase in the exchange rate. This will induce people from the rest of world, including Singapore, to transfer their bank deposits to the US. When this happens, the supply of loanable funds in Singapore will fall which will lead to a rise in interest rates. This explains why we are seeing higher monthly instalment payments for bank mortgages that are tied to SIBOR.

According the Shareinvestor website, UE' s NAV (note NAV and not RNAV) is 2.83. At px 3.16, UE last traded at 11% above NAV. KL' s NAV, on the other hand, is 4.95. At px 3.65, KL last traded at 26% below NAV.  Also, note that KL&rsquo s EPS is substantially higher n PE substantially lower than UE&rsquo s.  Perception of real value of the two cos shd take into account these pts as well as other factors such as the RNAVs the mkt ascribes to them and also future earning potentials, etc.  So, if we are looking at an offer px of, say, 20% higher than the last closing px for UE, I wld venture to say that even the final offer px of 4.60 for KL (assuming it goes through)   wld still considerably undervalue KL.  My 2c worth.  DYODD.

Last yr' s increqase appeared to already bumped up profit by 75%.  Another 50% increase is likely to increase it' s profit another 50% at least.  Factor in the steep oil px drop n profit cld perhaps increase  well over 100% compared to prior to the April 2014 fare  increase.  So, SMRT' s eps cld jump  to the early teens annually soon with the latest increase n if oil px stay low.  Share px cld also shoot past $2 again soon (it was abt $1 in Apr 14).  Seems only monopolies like these can continue to be luxury dividend plays.  On the other hand, some other coys who face harsh competitive environments n bleed yr in yr out have to find ways to reduce costs n increase productivity, etc to survive.

SINGAPORE (Jan 20): Shares in  Keppel Land  (  Financial Dashboard) has been strong recently amid speculation in the market that the company could be taken private by its parent  Keppel Corp  (  Financial Dashboard).

On Jan 20, the stock rose 5 cents on a volume of more than 10 million shares ending the session at $3.65. It is up 6.7% since the start of the year.

Keppel Land&rsquo s shares are now trading at a 20% discount its net asset value at Sept 13 of $4.59 per share.

Some market watchers had previously also attributed the trading activity to a special dividend.

According to a presentation in November, Keppel Land recorded net divestment gains of $1,065.7 million last year.

Keppel Land has a market cap of $5.6 billion ranks and assets of $13.8 billion, making it one of the top five locally listed property companies. Its dividend policy is to pay out one-third of profits.

Singapore accounts for 45% of assets, followed by China with 43.5% and Vietnam with 6%. The Keppel Land group includes Keppel REIT, the largest local office REIT in Singapore, which has assets under management of $8.2 billion.

For the nine months to Sept 2014, Keppel Land reported a net profit of $308 million, down 3.3% y-o-y because of lower contributions from property trading.

In a report issued late last year,  OCBC Investment Research  ascribed a fair value of $4.09 to the stock with a &ldquo buy&rdquo rating.

Keppel Land reports its full year 2014 results on Jan 21.

SHARES of Keppel Land hit a 52-week high on Tuesday, closing 1.1 per cent higher at S$3.65, even while rumours of a potential privatisation by its parent were dismissed by analysts covering the stock.

Despite some market rumours of a potential privatisation, analysts see little prospect....

I think one of the reasons why people like to buy S-chip or, for that matter, stocks of poorly performing companies is the gambling element of it. Most of them buy without much knowledge of the company but hope that with LUCK they might buy into a 5bagger or 10bagger or 20bagger. The mentality is one of gambling and not of investing. For these investors the reason for buying a stock s simplistic. If the company wins a contract, they get all excited and think the price will rocket up the next day. Never mind that the company has mountains of debts or  unreasonably high PE, etc. It' s " buy first and than hope and pray later" .
