So, where' s the crash.  To my mind, monetary easing is usually seen as favourable for stocks as it makes cost of funds lower.

TA_Expert      ( Date: 01-Aug-2019 10:07) Posted:

There is no crash despite that the central banks around the world are cutting interest rates.

The entire monetary policies in the world have reversed after President Trump came into power since 2016.

By right, the world should be undergoing monetary policy tightening as most economies are recovering from the GFC.

Are the ghost of NOL n SPH haunting yet another GLC/govt backed coy with hand-picked top management?  Might as well close shop.  Just look at BA' s ability to not only maintain profitability but substantially increase it too.

Singtel outlook cut to ' negative' by S& P in downgrade trifecta
WED, JUL 31, 2019 - 11:04 PM

MAINBOARD-LISTED Singtel' s outlook was cut to " negative" by credit agency Standard & Poor' s on Wednesday, a week before the telco is slated to release its first-quarter results.

Singtel will likely have weaker financial metrics in the coming year, S& P Global Ratings said, even as it affirmed its " A+" long-term and " A-1" short-term issuer ratings on the company.

Moody' s Investors Service and Fitch Ratings had lowered their outlook to negative in March, while S& P warned that same month that the company was skirting closer to a ratings downgrade trigger.

The outlook downgrade came on expectations that leverage - measured by the ratio of funds from operations to debt - will fall below 40 per cent in the year to March 31, 2020, on the back of declines at Singtel' s regional associates, especially Telkomsel in Indonesia.

The chances of this scenario are one in three, according to the S& P analysts, who added: " We revised the outlook on Singtel to reflect increasing competition in the company' s major operating markets and the concurrent elevated cash needs for capital expenditure and dividend payout."

The analysts did not factor in the impact of a potential divestment of Singtel' s loss-making but fast-growing digital assets - an option that company leadership has mooted - as the timing and valuation of such transactions in the medium term are still uncertain, S& P added.

The S& P report suggested that Singtel' s outlook could be further cut if leverage " stays close to or below 40 per cent on a sustained basis" .

Otherwise, the outlook could be bumped back up to " stable" , the analysts said, " if Singtel' s financial headroom improves in line with our expectations with disciplined financial policies" .

In tandem with the revised view of the parent, S& P has also lowered the outlook for Optus, Singtel' s Australian subsidiary, to " negative" .

But the agency noted that it does expect Singtel to " gradually improve its operating performance over the next two years" , supported by its market leadership and wide geographical footprint.

Singtel said in a reply on the bourse website that " Singtel and Optus' credit ratings are strong and we remain financially disciplined and committed to maintaining our investment-grade credit ratings" , reiterating a point that it had made after the Moody' s downgrade.

There is this operator, U Stars (started biz in 2015/2016), diversified from its coffee shop roots that is competing with Sheng Siong for new sites.

Was aggressive in bidding to secure sites and like Sheng Siong operates in the heartland.

But 2H will be bad.  How not so bad will depend on management' s adroitness at cost containment.  N of course if, n that' s a big if, they are able to get one or two contracts then, like I said, px is likely to fry up a bit.  Brazil?  I share the view that is is being fried over n over again to give an additional negative spin on the stock.  My sense, until n unless evidence surfaces otherwise, is SMM is in the clear n have not committed any wrong doing.

trademaster      ( Date: 31-Jul-2019 13:09) Posted:

All these news poor results and brazil case are just being recycled and refried to find an excuse for shortists to short down. Nothing is new. Smaller loss for 1H 2019 vs 2018 is in fact good news. Worst case scenario is all factored in the price.

Let me share some insight on recent levy raise

I visit rws quite regularly and got the year levy. For people who went there often, you will know the majority of customers are actually malaysians from johor. They came in buses load subsidied by rws , the points earned at casino can exchange for bus tickets.

No way to know how less sporeans, general feeling is lesser local in there , but not so obvious.

Yearly levy 3000, if you visit like 6 times per mth, 70 trips roughly per year. Per entry will be like $40 to $50. And i know many regulars almost there every few days.

From what i see , the drop in ringgit x rate and the number of tourists will affect RWS revenue more.

I for one have always thought ox is special.  Anyway, so many other apparently good stocks are also struggling.  It' s the mkt, or lack of interest in the equity mkt here, which is part n parcel of a famously known global financial centre, that is the real issue.

peppergal_87      ( Date: 31-Jul-2019 13:44) Posted:

Struggling hard to understand why analysts and investors are worried about Oxley and hence weak price. Debt repayment plans are very defined and with interest rate projected to drop, they should be in good position. 2019 repayment is on track and Singapore projects are mostly selling well and they bought cheap.

*Throwing in the towel for now* reported by CIMB

Suffering from no big bang orders
SMM guided for widening losses in 2H19F, implying more than S$30m losses per quarter. This is in addition to the unexpected loss of S$8.5m in 2Q19. Simplistically put, SMM had expected orders to come in but they did not, due to tender cancellations and delays in final investment decisions, such as FPSO for Rosebank, Bay Du Nord and Browse development. Costs (staff, R&D and capex) were incurred either to bid for or in anticipation of winning new orders. There have been no sizeable orders above S$200m since May 18. The last significant project was Shell?s Vito Floating Production Unit (FPU) hull, topsides and living quarters. Since then, orders have been fragmented and smaller in size, such as topsides for wind power ropax ferries and LNG bunker vessels.

What if orders come in for 2H19?
The damage from cumulative weak orders in 2H18-1H19 is likely to continue into 1Q20F. Even if SMM wins a S$2bn order today, it would take at least nine months to see meaningful profit recognition post engineering and procurement stages. Therefore, we think the market is unlikely to get excited over order wins until 1) the momentum becomes sustainable or 2) SMM shows consistent improvement in quarterly EBIT. Having said that, it is only right to point out that SMM is still actively chasing deals. Enquires are broad based, from production to drilling segments. Some notable new projects that SMM has been reported to be bidding for by Upstream include offshore platform for Shell?s Crux gas project in Western Australia and platform jackets for Shwe gas project off Myanmar. We now expect S$500m and S$1bn of new orders in 2019-20 (previously S$1bn-1.5bn). YTD order book stood at S$2.14bn.

Aesthetics could help in 2020
In FY20, there will be an instant boost of S$48m from the absence of accelerated depreciation incurred in FY19 as a result of the earlier move from Tanjung Kling yard to the new Boulevard Yard. In addition, the drawdown of S$1.5bn subordinate loan from SCI to repay bank borrowings could help to re-profile its reported net gearing from 1.44x in 2Q19 to 0.7x aesthetically.

Slash EPS expect continued losses in 2020F
We now expect SMM to report losses of S$71m and S$0.5m respectively in FY19F and FY20F, with the widening losses in 2H19 and c.2.5%-3.3% of EBIT margin for FY20-21F on weak orders.

Current NIM currently stands at 1.91, up .07%.  This seems more than credible.  Even if NIM reset  to 1.84 as per last qtr, say, DBS' net interest income shd still be pretty robust, I' d think.

Fair_value      ( Date: 30-Jul-2019 18:09) Posted:

Great gap up in the closing minutes.

As per CNBC, while there are fears of lower rates affecting the NIM of banks, there are other areas that the bank has been diversified into.

While double digit growth may be hard, we can still expect a high single digit growth.

Vested for REITs-like income stock.
