Short term wise I do believe SS is oversold.
Amazon effect will be mid and longer term. So is Kumming, not sure if will work, but successful or not Kumming will be a good exposure for SS overall.
I also shop online more nowadays for electrronics and household, but I still go fairprice, wet market and hawker centers, no change there. I am hearing more people going SS (away from NTUC), but my colleagues are pretty much still clueless about Amazon.sg.
In time all these development will impact on bottom line, but then again time will tell how.
Also noted that selling volume has moderated since the amazon announcement.

SS traditional retailer going to China who is ecommerce leader is like SPH going to China to sell print newspaper. I just cannot see what competitiveness it has to offer.
Don' t underestimate Amazon' s power to disrupt traditional retail. Even Capitamall trust will be affected in the long run.

Check out the pricing for yourself which shop offers the better pricing. amazon even offer free delivery within 2-4 hrs which SS cannot fulfill.
Why waste time queueing to pay and carry those heavy items... Amazon is teh way to go.

Even if SS makes it in China, they have to compete with online retailers too.
The entry of Amazon makes investors panic and sell from $1 to 90 cents. which is oversold and overreaction.
Amazon Prime has made it easier to order and deliver within 2 hours for free which SS with a lead in online only service North East region only and delivery cannot be done within 2-4 hrs.

Jumbo innovation ? I am sure many can sell crab...but they do have a good taste.
SS might surprise many , esp in Kumming city where a large supermkt with neat and nice rows of food product avail.
Esp with many foreign brands. Time will tell if they have the success formula in this city.
Further they are bidding another site in Spore.
At 0.905 , there is value in SS.

But SS do good in Singapore is due to no frill low cost. Those you mentioned succeed because of innovation not low cost. SS does not have advantage in innovation or technology.

Time will tell if SS is correct to venture into China.Still bullish and will accumulate when price dips.
Some win into China with well focus plan like Breadtalk, Jumbo and Capitaland.
SS has chosen Kumming ( not the major city) .....which they stand a good chance of success and its a smalll investment with a JV partner.
If this kick off , it will be a great start and huge market in the Kumming area.

Its JV store will open this year.
Singapore supermarket giant Sheng Siong could be looking for an alternate source of growth with its joint venture store in China.
According to DBS Group Research, Sheng Siong' s first store in Kunming, which spans 40,000 sq. ft, is expected to commence operations this year.
" We believe Sheng Siong' s JV in China is a wildcard. If operations prove to be successful, in time to come, China can provide an alternate source of growth," analyst Alfie Yeo said.
There is scope for the number of stores to increase should Sheng Siong' s business model work, the analyst said, noting that the downside for the JV is limited to its US$6m paid-up capital which is sufficient to open 2-3 new stores.

I don't think so. If you look at Sph, cdg, Noble, Ezion, they all taking a very Long journey to settle 'down'.
