Earlier on, I was referring to short term price action when I mentioned TB price softening.  I know that in the long term, TB will have a great time out there, as they have an unusually strong leader, Charoen.    He is a strategic thinker, and he understands the market and the psychology a lot more than the other beer makers, even the one he studied under, Carlsberg maker.  I think he exceeded his teacher in this respect.    By taking Sabeco, TB has created a new space to play out it' s strategy.    If one is in for the long term, TB is a very good stock to buy, even at the current price.

I' m just holding back on stock investments for the moment, so no entry price as yet.

But looking at ThaiBev' s financials (before Sabeco), dividend yield about 3%, ROE exceeding 20%, excellent eps growth, it' s a good stock to buy. Yep, and low debt, surprisingly low.    Only PE is a mtie high, not particularly hung up over book value though comparatively it' s lower than usual or can also say they paid out good dividends resulting in lower retained earnings.    If you' re hot on this stock, go for it.    I' m a little fussy and there' re things happening, making me hold back on stock investments and move most to cash.

I' m also eyeing the stock, and will buy when the dust' s cleared.  Right now, with Sabeco in the fold, TB has a good control of the the Vietnamese market.    However, the premium paid for Sabeco may not be recovered immediately, the fear is that with taxes increasing in Vietnamese beer market, I think it' s 55% or so, from 50%, sales may be affected.    Sabeco' s last quarter results was also not good.    Also, I think the synergies may not be there in the short term for either way, ie Chang into Vietnam market or Vietnamese beer into Thai market.      The other part is the Thai beer market, with taxes raised, the beer sales were ramped up ahead of implementation, hence sales will be slower ahead as the stocks are in the dealers' warehouses.    I think this explains TB' s revenues but this will slow going ahead.      For these two main reasons, TB results may not be so good in 2018, I think.  This will affect the share price, and will be a good time to nibble.    The competition issue is also lingering, Boon Rawd, TB' s biggest competitor in Thailand, is likely to reposition its brands against Chang.  Frankly, I am a beer drinker, and I won' t touch Chang, it' s a cheap beer with lousy taste.  Singha is miles better.  But taste is not the only factor in beer success, it' s marketing, alcohol content, and I think in the poorer segments, the price.    Chang is positioned below Singha and above Leo.  Leo is a little laggard, noone heard of it, which may give Boon Rawd a good chance to push a cheap beer and take back some market share from Chang.
In poorer countries, beer is still not affordable, hence though Charoen has a foothold in those markets, the growth rate is not so fantastic as yet.    Long term, yes, but we are all also in the short term run.

Vietnam is a developing country, therefore a good bet.

Impending increase in alcohol tax & excise is not a deterrent for alcohol consumption, in fact a good excuse to increase the price to over compensate the tax levied. Let the Govt be the bad guys. ThaiBev profit actually went up after the Thai Govt hike the alcohol tax (verification needed).

Anyway, I m still not in yet, watching and waiting.....

Closed last year on 30/12/16 at $0.85.

An 8% capital appreciation in a year is not too bad.

It has limited growth potential at home, hence M& A is the way to go. Recent acquisition in Vietna will provide the impetus.

If Vietnam brings in good results, it may break $1.00 in 2018,

Personally, I dont like the $0.20 NAV and P/B of over 4.

Healthy company, but
NAV is less than S$0.20 and
Price/Book value is more than 4.

From memory, it attempted to break the $1.00 barriers a few times but failed, likely to stay range bound between $0.85-$.095.

No idea what the share price will turn out to be in the next week.  Agree that TB is a good stock to own for long term, mainly because of Charoen, his forceful character and ambition.  Short term, really don' t know.  I considered buying TB too, studied the Thai beer market, and decided I won' t.  There are risks I am not willing to take.

There' re many reasons, Sabeco is the chief reason I think.  Everyone knows TB overpaid, which may be a good decision for the long run, immediate impact likely not good. The other is the anticipation sales will be lower because of sales ramp up due to tax.      Beer market is also very competitive in Thailand, Chang had a good run in 2017, no guarantee success will continue as Boon Rawd is also entrenched in the Thai market with Singha and Leo.    So  I think most would not expect good results for next few quarters for Thaibev.

I think its a good time to buy. ThaiBev is one of my pick for 2018. They are gaining from strength to strength.

First they swallow F& N, then Myanmar brewery, now Vietnam. I guess they have already or set to corner the S.E.Asia market. (The part of S.E.A whereby beer is part of their Everyday lives).

Though not sure why it recently pulled back. Not gonna think too much into it, just waiting for opportunity to get in on a bad market day.

Anyway, Charoen&rsquo s counters are always good bet or investment.
