Agree with your statement below. Its double whammy due to flights not taking off. The hedges will have consider the revenue and at what price to hedge.
Just one thing to point out is that is it really necessary to hedge up to 79% of projected consumption? Seems excessive to me and its not the first time to SIA suffer huge losses. It happened in 2015 also. |

hedging is to make certain a future spend at today cost. there is little risk but has cost. it only become a problem when 1 of the leg is not executable like cancelled flight. at many times people like to look at 1 leg of the hedge and said make how much or lost how much. i think that is not correct most of the time. suppose there is a flight in 6 month times. expected fuel cost 15% of total cost. so buy forward 6 month the fuel. then airline must try to sell as much of the seats to close the sale end. if sale did not meet expectation that is the failure fo sale not the hedge operations. sia by changing to new planes is improving fuel efficiency of their operations and that is positive. by setting up a low cost operator scoot they will try to sell ahead of time the empty seats (perishable) that is balance of every flight. so overall they become more profitable. but at time like these where passenger demand drop to zero. the airline just has to try to reduce cost as much as possible. parking cost, man power cost, office sg& a. leakage. every area. really  poor thing.   |

Operating results for Feb (extract)
In February 2020, SIA Group airlines' passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger-kilometres) fell by 17.0% compared to last year as overall travel demand was severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. The capacity (measured in available seat- kilometres) for the same period was down 2.4%, leading to a 12.1 percentage point decrease in passenger load factor (PLF) to 69.1%. Cargo load factor (CLF) was 3.5 percentage points higher with growth in cargo traffic (measured in freight tonne-kilometres) of 8.6% exceeding 2.1% expansion in capacity. East Asia and Americas registered improvements in CLF. Since the start of February 2020, the SIA Group has progressively announced flight cuts across the network as it adjusts capacity to match demand changes arising from the spread of COVID-19 across the globe. Market conditions have continued to deteriorate in March and, with WHO declaring COVID-19 a pandemic and multiple countries issuing travel advisories and restrictions, travel demand is expected to weaken significantly in the near term. |

I just read this BT article - horrible news about the potential mark to market hit to SIA NAV from the hedging losses. One said possibly SGD2billion.  If in a normal year, this would be a terrible calamity. Now with the grounding of flights and continous high staff and other overheads on top of massive oil hedge losses, the losses for the FY would be unimaginable. Can people take a SGD4 or SGD5 billion reported loss, if it happens? This sends chills throughout the whole body now.  How can they even hire such staff in charge of hedging.  Hedging is supposed to protect you and not harm you.

Let me summarize why SIA is worth less than half its Book Value:
1. No domestic market. Unlike other big countries, domestic flights will be the first to recover from such crisis. SIA has none. 2. Oil price Low but so what? Their oil forward contract was pegged at unbelievably high price. Poor management foresight. (Easy for me to be cynical at hind sight) 3. High depreciation costs due to young fleet. Though non cash but still bite the P and L. 4. Lock down spreading to major flight destinations. 5. Virus worsening and fears spreading. Many stay home. Companies practically work from home. Hence, upon recovery, SIA will be one of the last to take off. $5 TP or lower. |

Plunging oil prices add to headwinds for SIA TUE, MAR 17, 2020 - 5:50 AM AS COUNTRIES tighten their borders, travellers hunker down and oil prices tumble, Singapore Airlines (SIA) is flying into something of a perfect storm. While cheaper fuel normally spells relief, depressed oil prices represents a double whammy for the airline group, which has already been... https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/companies-markets/plunging-oil-prices-add-to-headwinds-for-sia |

It is about time to give those cxxky looking cabin crew a reality check. Time to get grounded and go jobless. Put on more smiles before entering your planes and engage more eye contact to the world. You are nothing within passengers. Nice. | ||||

It is very noble of you to think of the livelihood of fellow Singaporeans especially those working in SIA. Many SIA employees may lose their jobs or pay cut, etc. Unfortunately in reality, there is always 2 sides of a coin. Somebody will be celebrating the downfall of SIA as they have shorted the share price to reap handsome profits and so on. Mr Goh CT once said before in a GE - when you are at the polling station, think of your own interest first, not others. Welcome to capitalism. This hard true that one has to learn to accept. Some may disagree because they belong to the side of the coin. Take it easily pal.
