The answer is simple, Shipping groups that is profitable like Maersk, MSC, CMA and OOCL is all privately owned and they cut cost by laying off huge number of employee and they overcharged customers too. Return on profit is all on their mind and soon NOL and other government linked shipping lines would follow due to freight rate being commoditised. Shippers don pay premium for quality service, they aimed for the lowest freight rate even service might be bad due to late delivery etc cos currently slow steaming is the norm now. Soon NOL might depose off their holding in the US west coast port/terminal holding and logistic business to improve finance sheet like what other major liners are doing now. Cut cost to the bone and disposing off non core asset to focus only on core business of port to port operation only. Maersk can cut cost down by a ridiculous 900M in 2Q , just imagine how much NOL can cut owning to the fact Maersk is already the most cost effective liner in the world. Lot of fat to burn in ship case.

Anwer is Obvious, Cosco Shipping take care of Greater China, NOL take care of Singapore, OOCL take care of itself and only care of itself and how they get their money is anybody guess, where nearly the whole world Shipping companies including Maersk loose money and they loose money.

Unrest in Middle East, poor economic growth in Europe... these are only noise and excuses. Fundamentally the business model must be sound, management must be savvy to steer the company through rough patches.   |

Has anybody bothered to ask why OOCL (316 HK) is consistently profitable while NOL is consistently losing money? In the last  five years the cumulative net loss of NOL is US$1,094m  whereas the cumulative net profit of OOCL is US$2,215m. If  we go back further in time, OOCL has an even better  performance pre-GFC. Here are the obvious differences:  OOCL  does not have any  govt help and is run by businessmen. Perhaps  equally impt is its total debt to market cap  is < 1.0 (NOL: 2.2x currently). |

Europe finally returned to growth, with the badly hit Italy and Spain returned to growth and even Greece is recovering strongly. With the developed world recovering, demand for manufactured goods made in asia would soon pick up in 2014. Currently what blocking ship share price recovering is the Syria crisis, Fed tapering and US debt ceiling, in another 1-2 months these 3 issues would be behind us then u start to see ship moving.

this year don expect a lot from ship yet due to a few more hurdle for global economy to cross before growth return to more sustainable trend. Just hang on and enjoy wayang drama coming out from US Syria crisis and debt ceiling . Europe is recovering but still need some more time to be on road to sustainability. Obama blink on Syria war and now the ball is back to US congress for war approval, he break the norm for US president to ask for congress approval for war lol. Next time every president had to ask for congress approval before they can jump the gun, lot of warmonger republican must be pissed cos no war = no income for their defense industries. IF Republican controlled congress approve attack and something go wrong, Obama can escape responsibility and push the blame on congress, in that sense US congress most likely would vote no for attack to protect own backside.

Obama dump the decision to go to war to congress, asking a vote on it. This pushes back the timetable for attack back till Sep 9 when US congress would vote. This is a US political game, no longer a Syria crisis very high chance US congress would block the war move just like the  Britain case. Smart move by Obama to defuse Syria crisis in the short term  and if congress disapprove he can called for a economy sanction supported by international community to punish Syria.  | ||||

This Syria crisis is all about saving Obama face not really about stopping the use of chemical weapons by the way chemical weapons in the first place was sold to Syria by the developed power lol. If Obama willing to eat humble pie and called off the missile strike, use economy sanction is more effective in enacting pain on the Syria regime cos cannot  account frozen  is actually more painful than having a few buildings blown up.  just look at iran, now the regime there is suffering like crazy running low  on money and currency devalued like 67%.    Now Obama trying to wriggle out of this shit hole cos either he attack Syria or called off the attack he would be attacked by the republican, so he need to think of a ingenius plan to both had the cake and eat it. Hope he can pull off this crisis like all other trials he faced earlier.

UN inspectors gone from Syria, now clock counting down for US wayang PR show. They might do it on sunday anyway it just for show like firework, hit some empty buildings/barracks then declared victory, typical American way of venting anger.

Not to worry too much, when Europe financial crisis happen last year this time lot of people said euro is doom and world coming to an end. But now we still breathing and standing, Syria crisis is just a global PR wayang show for US to show it leadership. US might be doing something on sat / sun when the UN inspectors leaves Syria, most likely end operation on sunday due to labour day holiday on Monday.( 24H strike operation highly). Oil most likely would crash after that but again Obama might surprise everyone again like what he did in US presidential election. Making the impossible possible signature move of Obama lol.

Middleeast tension will send oil all the way up , rising asia's cost in a period of thin margins .This will choke off any recovery and along with slowing china and india, cause a long needed recession to reset economies from previous excesses.

Maybe when Syria crisis is over but I stay out of the market till 30 Oct for the 3Q result. SCFI up by 25 pt for the week ending 30 August, 50/50 chance of SEP GRI sticking next week. Today ship got hit by selling order but low volume, later in afternoon BB step in and stabilised ship at 1.04, drop as low as 1.025 very close to 1.00 resistance level. If Sep GRI stick somehow then 3Q should be good for ship since demand are usually better this time of year and very high chance majority of the 135 000 TEUs chartered would be retired in 3Q resulting in capacity reduction in both US/Europe lane which bring up the load factor in turn increase freight rate. For NOL path to profit is how much cut could be achieved in operating cost vs freight rate. |
