I think we should really express our deep unhappiness to SIA Management about the high pay to Pilots despite their sitting around doing nothing.  It is perhaps a no brainer that if utilisation plunges over 90%, that utilisation is less than 1 or 2 pilots out of 10 previously.  So, these underutilised pilots are just sitting at home playing computer games, exercising at the gym, or watching Netflix???

CATHAY PAC AIR Aug Passenger Vol. Slumps 98.8% Burning $1.5-2B Cash/ Mth 2020/09/14 12:08 CATHAY PAC AIR announced that Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon carried a total of 35,800 passengers last month, a decrease of 98.8% compared to August 2019. The month&rsquo s revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) fell 98.1% year-on-year. Cathay Pacific Group Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Ronald Lam said the group has already taken decisive actions to reduce its costs, but despite these efforts it is burning cash at a rate of HK$1.5 billion to HK$2 billion per month, and will continue to experience significant cash burn until the market recovers.  http://www.aastocks.com/en/stocks/news/aafn-con/NOW.1043148/latest-news |

Those above 62 don't even need a retrenchment package to let them go. Just a 1 month notice because they are considered retired and then reemployed contract workers. Absolutely no reason to keep them around until they are 65 and waste double digit millions of dollars every year. Shareholders should question the management on the basis for their decision to keep these unproductive retired pilots around on their payroll.

We don' t even know what Ho Ching and the top guys at TH are paid. None of the 61% are even bothered, if we were in a proper democracy, such things will never happen.

You mean Temasek money originally came and dropped from the sky? It is funded by State Money originally.  So, Temasek belongs to Singaporeans.

They should just cut pay and cut more pilots. No one owes SIA Pilots and Management staff a living. This is the sad reality of life - many of us and other Singaporeans have gone through the pain of retrenchment and redundancy. SIA Pilots had a great run. Why should we and taxpayers continue to pay the bill for them to sit at home and do nothing? Otherwise, they should keep their jobs but go on sabbatical without pay. If they want to resign - so be it, and they can go find a new job without any retrenchment benefits. In fact, Management should hang the axe of retrenchment over these Pilots, so that they should just take the packages and go. |

Sad to say, this is not the case. The management are mostly very senior pilots themselves.
The reality is that SIA may seem to be retrenching a lot of people, but the majority of them are junior pilots and all cadet pilots. The numbers look big but the cost saving is minimal because all the expensive pilots at the top of the payscale are still being kept around and even re-employed to stay home and do nothing.
I don't think editor Ven knows what's really happening within the company. What the management presents to the public and the government is not what is actually happening, and the decisions are made not for the future of the company but for the survival and benefits of those making the decisions.

True, but i think SIA had factor is longer term business downsizing... Unlikely flights frequency goes back to original number next 5yrs...this retrenchment is to remove some excess resources for a considerable future smaller operation. They will hiring in future younger less experience pilots and slowly increase thier pay over years.

Sorry. I interpret your words wrongly. I humbly apologise to you. I will say, hiring will be based on merits. Younger may mean early 40s and they can do a good job also. age should not be a factor in hiring. SAF fighter jets pilots.. what are their age?
But those troublemakers and greedy opportunistic pilots shld not be rehired, no matter how good they are.

Our policy makers screwed up the living conditions in dorms and thus the c19 spread like fire. We probably would not have to spend those $100b.

I mean SIA unlikely to rehire expensive pilots after retrenching them this round too. They will replace them with cheaper younger alternatives. Someone made comment, after paying them large layoff package, then rehire them again.. It is unlikely.

LKY stance: The castigation, no doubt a tactic of divide-and-rule, also established a more significant point: It is not up to PRs or other foreigners to get into union matters and play around with decisions that affect the rest of Singaporeans.
Capt Goh had tried to undermine the interests of SIA and Singapore, he said. 'If Singapore goes down, you go down,' he told the Singaporeans across the table. 'He doesn't go down.' The issue now is, is the 4g ministries being screw by the foreign pilots? And in the end, all singaporeans foot the bill? Like dorm covid cases |
