I see two different points here being made, one regarding the effect of fundamentals and results on price and the second being the importance of fundamentals in investing. Greg is arguing that price is dependent on BBs rather than on results. Qing, however, is arguing that investors should invest based on a company' s fundamentals and on its results rather than investors buying on branding. What I do here is to correct a few observations about the price of the shares of SIA over the course of the year. SIA price has declined since the start of the year. While it is not a straight line daily decline, the trend was downwards since beginning 2020. It certainly rose today, but it has not been as Greg has said, ' daily UP' despite a 3.5bn loss. So if SQ loses 1 trillion dollars (even exaggerated), it is unlikely any BB including TH will want to support it anymore. So its price will fall towards ZERO (not SQ UP as Greg had asserted). And while Greg is right to say that BB support is key to the sotck market share prices, the results of a company is equally important, if not more, because it is the main cause (other than for political/strategic reasons) of why BBs and other investors will want to support the price in the first place. Simply put, higher profits tend to lead to higher prices in the long run.  The converse is also true, lower profits lead to lower prices in the long run. That is what we are seeing in SIA now.

Yes, thanx for your clarifications and expert accounting views, wiseinvestor. Definitely the results are worse Y/Y and also Q/Q. ETBITA surely will not cover even interest payments. But they have cash to pay for it. As for impairments, yes, these can be reversed if the planes are flying again, provided they are not sold. So thank you again for your input. We needed your accounting skills here.

I just checked financial numbers of SIA. They seem worse. Understanding Covid-19 pandemic, the recovery can' t work well over short-medium term cos there are currently many closed travelling borders except for air cargo service, and SIA is very high debt-laden. Still risky interest coverage ratio, saying ETBITA can' t cover interest expenses. In view of that MCBs is accounted for in equity only than accounted for as a liability or shared liability and equity because MCBs are within the issuer' s right to exercise conversion or redemption option, SIA made wise move to save interest costs in bad times until the end of 10th year or earlier,  if 4.84 price or higher take place, they will excercise conversion option, Otherwise, they will exercise redemption option. Either way is not good cos of 1) high dilution of existing shareholders or 2) high impact on income statement in term of accumulated interest expenses over 10 years or less. Refering to high impairment loss on aircrafts (removed from service fleet), they don' t really mean to be disposed of or fully retired. When there is a postive situation call for use of old aircrafts, especially when highly demanded, high impairment loss will be reversed. This don' t need to be a permanent impairment loss. This is in accorance with IFRS - impairment of assets. Anyway, looking forward to long term recovery since i have few shares of SIA. I am not joining any shortists' camp |

Simply horrible results - time to cut more staff pay and pilots and cabin crew. We cannot subsidise them forever. | ||||

future is kinda unpredictable.. that time when oil price falls and O& G industry in downturn, no one expect the down cycle to be so long.. even until now, O& G industry never recover.. ppl will eventually want to travel and have vacation, but just dunno when the world will finally open up and let planes fly

Even they did the plane not design for cargo. Per trip profit definitely cannot compare to those specify cargo plane.
The conversion can only minimise losses. Open border is the only way out and seen like in the pandemic situation, airlines are necessary sacrifice. This stock can only buy when their flight start to take off... Else u just betting on a better future but uncertain. Not vested or anything just speaking what I think. Buying SIA like buying O&G stock when oil price 1st plunge back then. Betting future will be better but we all know many don't survive to see the light.

That is all from me folks... ... my eyes are tired. It has been a long day and I have not had a beer! There will be a Q/A session with management following the 1H report and that session will be recorded down in words and typed out nicely as another report - management  discussion cum Q/A. This is usually released on the SGX website a day or two after the results are announced. Do look out for it, please! Ahh... and now for a TIGER! |

Yup. Debt of 8.5bn. How much is the interest? 2% pa is $170m pa.
Naturally long term debt carries higher interest right? Just like a person who max out credit card, he can make the minimum payment and keep rolling. In this case, SIA can choose to roll over. But at what cost to shareholders? When we search for undervalued companies, debt free or little debt is one of the criteria we look out for right? Cash is blood, lifeline of a company. Without blood, u can have good prospects but company will still fail.

Which leads me to the fourth positive: SIA' s debt consists mainly of long term debt, and therefore, no worries about short-term repayments which are more than covered by 7.0 billion cash on hand.

why airlines like SIA dont convert their passenger planes temporarily to transport cargo? i.e. load up the empty passenger seats with alibaba goods, pharmaceuticals, etc, (secured properly), transport it around to earn extra $ instead of letting the planes rot on tarmac.   |
