United Engineers posts surge in quarterly profit Section: MONEY COMPANIES By: PHYLLIS HO Publication: The Straits Times 16/05/2015 UNITED Engineers reported a surge in first-quarter earnings, thanks to contributions from subsidiaries and reduced expenses. Net profit more than trebled to $25.0 million from $7.9 million in the same period last year. However, revenue fell 24 per cent to $515.3 million, mainly owing to the absence of any contribution from the divested Automotive and MFS Technology businesses. Still, the hit to the topline was partly cushioned by a higher progressive revenue recognition from property sales at Eight Riversuites in Whampoa East, and higher contributions from subsidiary Multi-Fineline Electronix (Mflex). As a result of Mflex' s performance, the technology and manufacturing division became the largest contributor to revenue this quarter. The division secured $16.6 million in operating profit before interest, reversing a loss of $27 million in the same period last year. High returns at Eight Riversuites have also raised revenue for the property development division by 62 per cent. In contrast, reduced contributions from the group' s divestments caused revenue for the corporate services and others division to plunge from $310.3 million to $22.7 million. Yet, United Engineers still managed to report higher profits. Its performance was helped by a 91 per cent cut in income tax expenses and significant cuts in business costs. Earnings per share hit 3.9 cents in the first quarter, up from 1.2 cents in the corresponding quarter last year. Net asset value per share for the group stood at $3 as at March 31, up from $2.93 as at Dec 31, last year. United Engineers shares closed unchanged at $2.59 yesterday. |

Who is grabbing what we don' t know. There' s a big speculative element in all the rumours and speculation that' s firing our imagination. Eg, personally, I don' t buy the idea the PCRD will go private. But then again, it' s anybody' s guess n I cld be wrong. We can spend hours arguing n nothing may come of it. My own perspective is that there' s plenty of trickery in the mkt. People may use a lot of ploys to avoid detection until their objectives are achieved n then the grand plan unfolds. Recall Sakara Resources? Just before the privatisation announcement trading was very heavy n px kept dropping to < 1.20. Then suddenly came the announcement - privatise at 1.90. I shan' t add anymore to the debate on this. It' s left to all our imagination. Good luck to whoever makes the right guess - be it UE or PCRD or any other stocks that rumours are flying around.

Charlie is right too. But not all of us are Charlie. So different perspective. SOme of people I know is ' concern' when a sudden deal shows up and it shows up too quickly. If the next deal really shows up, it should well be a quicky as the buyer already knows what the offeror wanted and would not fail to put in a good offer on the table. Even no one wants to take, the OCBC/GEH team may just sell buildings one by one and unlock it. In fact it will be easier to sell off one property at a time. Easier to swallow. If not, a crative REIT can be considered. Anyway, the above I am just blind logical guessing the minds of the BODs. Dont take it seriously. Surely, I will buy and realign my CPF portfolio if UE price lower for a trend reason. I am not a technical person and don' t quite understand it either. |

What' s the fascination with UE? I was vested earlier in the year when it was $3.1X. Deal didn' t came through, I decided to cut loss and move on to other stocks. If you guys are looking for privatization/delisting play, take a look at Pacific Century Regional Development (PCRD ticker P15) instead. I took up both at the same time, PCRD sitting at 30% profit already. The window for PCRD is closing, if you want a sure-bet, start moving your funds into PCRD and stop wasting time with UE. |

I think already got people grab. Seriously, I will grab if really 2.20. The market is anybody' s guess. Let it be and it will take time to realize true value. I don' t think Mr C is that ' small' person to grab like small traders/players/investors like many of us, who hope to get some extra cash for holidays and such. But Ms C could be that kind of mindset though anytime much much larger than all of us who posts here combined. |

2.20 think a lot of people will grab. Mr C will pounce also. But spore mkt people play so many tricks, they can easily force down px if they want n collect cheap from those who cannot or have no patience to hold.
