US tariff blitz prompts container carriers to hike rates and cancel sailingsEfforts to stem freight rate decline may be in vain if capacity continues to rise Liner operators have cancelled about 10% of their scheduled sailings on major east-west trades this month to stem the downward spiral in freight rates.
The move is the latest in a series of efforts by carriers to bring capacity in line with demand. Some 68 out of a total of 713 scheduled sailings have been cancelled over the five weeks from the end of March to 6 May, according to Drewry. |
