Analysts positive on Sembcorp' s long-term PPA with the state of Andhra Pradesh

Analysts from CGS-CIMB Research and Citi Research are keeping " add" and " buy" on Sembcorp Industries after the company announced, on Jan 4, that it had inked a 12-year long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Andhra Pradesh' s state DISCOM for its Plant 2.

The PPA was entered into by Sembcorp' s subsidiary, SEIL.

No tariff was disclosed but CGS-CIMB analyst Lim Siew Khee believes that it should be close to market rate IEX spot prices in November to December 2021 averaged 3.33 rupees/kWh.

Based on data released by Sembcorp in 1HFY2021, SEIL 1 has contracted capacities of 570MW to Telangana DISCOMS and 500MW to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh DISCOMS. SEIL 2 has contracted capacity of 250MW to Bangladesh Power Development Board.

With the contract, Lim expects SEIL 2 to be profitable in FY2023.

" SEIL 2 has historically recorded losses since FY2016, with FY2020 registering $52 million in losses. We believe this contract will turn SEIL 2 to profitability from FY2023 onwards," writes Lim in a Jan 5 report.

The development is seen as " positive" for Sembcorp' s share price.

To this end, Lim has kept her target price for the counter at $2.51, based on 15 times CY2022 P/E, which is the average of Sembcorp' s Asian peers.

Citi analyst Jame Osman concurs with Lim' s view.

" We believe this latest PPA will improve the profitability of Plant 2 with 66% of capacity now contracted under long-term PPA. Also importantly, this should alleviate key risk of asset impairment," he writes in a Jan 5 report.

" Looking ahead, we think this could also position SEIL in better stead to potentially divest its India thermal energy assets (retaining its renewables business (SGI)) in the near-term, as this would also enable Sembcorp to meet its 2025 GHG emission target. In 2019, Sembcorp increased its ownership of SEIL to 100% (from 94%) and recognised its ownership interest at $1.57 billion," he adds.

Osman has, too, kept his target price on Sembcorp at $2.52. Furthermore, he has identified the counter as his preferred pick amongst Citi' s coverage of the Singapore industrials sector.

" We believe clarity provided by mgmt. on Sembcorp' s brown-to-green transformation targets warrant a higher multiple, as peers with majority renewables exposure are commanding over 10 times EV/EBITDA," he continues.

Shares in Sembcorp closed flat at $2.14 on Jan 13.

Sembcorp signs 12-year agreement to supply power to Indian state Andhra Pradesha

Sembcorp Energy India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply 625 megawatts of power to power distribution companies in Andhra Pradesh in India.

The 12-year agreement is expected to commence in 2023, said mainboard-listed Sembcorp in a bourse filing on Wednesday (Jan 5).

The power supply will be generated from Sembcorp Energy' s 2.6 gigawatt supercritical power generation facility in Nellore, India.

With the agreement, 77 per cent of Sembcorp Energy' s thermal plant capacity would be underpinned by long and mid-term PPAs, said Sembcorp.

It added that the agreement is not expected to have a material impact on the company' s earnings per share and net asset value per share for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2022.

Vipul Tuli, chief executive of Sembcorp Industries' South Asia arm, said: " At a time when Sembcorp is actively increasing its presence in renewable power, this long-term PPA will ensure optimal utilisation of our conventional generation capacity.

" We are pleased to continue our partnership with Andhra Pradesh on its journey of growth and development."

The counter closed S$0.05 or 2.5 per cent higher at S$2.06 on Tuesday before the announcement.

looking at its book value of 1.91 and trading at PE of aro 11x,  these are not high valuation at all. 
Further, w India listing , global push in clean energy and SCI is certainly one of the leading trusted player here . 
...SCI hitting much higher valuation is more of when and not will it .
Any pull back could be opportunity to add.

Sembcorp Industries' UK unit to construct 360 MW energy storage system
SEMBCORP Industries' wholly owned subsidiary in the United Kingdom, Sembcorp Energy UK (SEUK), intends to construct Europe' s largest energy storage system - a 360 MW battery - at its Wilton International industrial site.
 
The energy storage system is expected to lend resilience to the UK' s electricity network and boost the growth of renewables, said Sembcorp Industries Sembcorp Ind: U96 0% in a press statement on Tuesday (Dec 14), adding that the move is in support of UK' s net zero targets.
 
SEUK' s Wilton International site in Teeside has available land and connections that will allow " swift instalment" of the batteries that will be built in tranches.
 
This investment will add 70 cleaner, healthier and safer jobs to the thousands already delivered across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool as critical technologies are being developed to " make the UK net zero by 2050" , said Ben Houchen, Tees Valley mayor in a press statement.
 
SEUK currently operates 70 MW of batteries, with a further 50 MW already in the pipeline and due to be operational in early 2022.
 
With a large portfolio, the units are able to supply power and other services to the national grid swiftly, which is crucial to maintaining a secure and stable energy system that will aid the UK' s low-carbon transition, said Sembcorp Industries.
 
The battery portfolio expansion together with SEUK' s 300 MW net zero emissions plant - Whitetail Clean Energy - announced in July 2021, will " align SEUK' s growth with technologies" that support a greener future, noted Sembcorp Industries.
 
With the completion of these developments, SEUK' s total energy portfolio will total over 1.6 GW, with almost half a GW being supplied by batteries.
 
Said Andy Koss, chief executive of Sembcorp Industries, UK & Middle East: " Now, more than ever, flexible energy sources play an increasingly important role in maintaining secure and reliable energy supplies. With a growing reliance on renewables, the UK energy system needs to be flexible and able to respond quickly to changes."
 
" Sembcorp Energy UK is committed to accelerating the energy transition with sustainable solutions, such as batteries," he added.
 
This announcement is not expected to have a material impact on the earnings per share and net asset value per share of Sembcorp Industries for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2021, it said.
