5th June 2014 Seatrade Indonesia stands to gain from rising global container traffic: Maersk By Lee Hong Liang from Singapore Indonesia is expected to benefit from the rise in global container shipping traffic, but the country?s infrastructure will need to catch up, according to Maersk Line. ?There?s obviously plenty of room for greater growth in Indonesia, if it can be supported by more foreign direct investment. The economy is relatively stable and there has been no major disruption to business. Overall the outlook for Indonesia over the medium to long term remains positive,? said Jakob Frils Sorensen, president director, Maersk Line Indonesia. Infrastructure development remains the key to the country?s continued growth. Plans are underfoot to build a new integrated port and industrial estate in Surabaya as well as a new container port in Jakarta to help ease the congestion at Tanjung Priok, Indonesia?s main port. ?The new port will enable shipping lines to do direct calls at Jakarta, so customers in Indonesia can benefit from faster transit times and reduced logistics costs. This however needs to be supported by better inter-coastal connectivity so Jakarta can act as a main transshipment port, and offer more competitive costs to shipping lines,? Sorensen said. ?With better infrastructure you will see more investments. The cycle needs to be reignited and the Indonesian government can focus on this to drive future trade growth.? While exports of manufactured goods are expected to rise, there are concerns about a fall in imports of capital goods into Indonesia. A weaker rupiah and infrastructure bottlenecks, especially at the country?s main ports, are the main reasons for the expected decline in import of capital goods. Domestic businesses have also put expansion plans on hold as the country awaits the outcome of the 9 July direct presidential elections. Sorensen noted that imports of waste commodity, wood pulp, foodstuffs and autoparts have declined by 15% year-on-year. To increase its network and coverage in Indonesia, Maersk Line will offer a direct service from Bitung port in North Sulawesi to Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. This will considerably reduce the transit time by an average of 5-7 days to reach major markets like Europe and the US. There is definitely anticipation of increase in global container traffic. The question is by how much and if it will balance the over supply of container ship capacity that has plagued the shipping industry the last few years. | ||||

Earlier European central bank ECB had acted and lower interest rate to negative for bank deposit which meant bank had to pay if they deposited their money in central bank. ECB head mentioned in post meeting post that they are preparing for bond like buying similiar to what US FED are doing. European QE coming soon. US FED QE3 boosted price of properties and yield stocks like telecom and banks, guess what european QE would do. Top3 carriers are all European based and soon the Ang Moh money from Europe would come down to Asia to snap up cheap cheap bargain growth stock. Do you even understand the relationship between industrial raw material like iron ore, steel etc which noble is involved in, they are used for making electronic product consumer based stuff which are usually made in China then exported over to the US/Europe, Bulk shipping would benefit and so would container shipping it is a product cycle too bad container shipping is at the tail end of the cycle had to wait a awhile. Global economists and banks all made their prediction that world economies would be recovering this year and next, trade would expand but not explosive. Under capacity issue would lingers but would be even out in 2016, so many dickheads had been predicting the container doomday from 2008 till now and all fail horrible. Anwer is no, overcapacity can fill up all the expected recovery. Furthermore, raw material recovery will boost bulk carrier instead of container shipping.

Global demand for industrial raw material recovering as seen by Noble share price recovery. Currently it is recovering to the 1.50 range, now just need China PMI to go back to expansion mod in June/Jul then can be sure of global demand for imported good would strengthen in the 2H 14. This should bore well for ship share price as stock market move like 6 - 9 months in advance of the actual improvement in financial result. Same as i always said in the past 2 years, endure and hang on for investor, punters just wait for BB action then we go in for the kill. Now is football time and massive loss of sleep next week. |

"All twelve Federal Reserve Districts report that economic activity expanded," said the Fed's latest "Beige Book" report, based on a survey of economic conditions in recent weeks. That marked an improvement from the previous Beige Book, released on April 16, when two districts - Cleveland and St. Louis - reported a decline in economic activity as the economy was emerging from a first-quarter contraction of 1.0 percent. The May Beige Book said growth was described as "moderate" in seven Fed districts and "modest" in five. Activity in the area around Kansas City slowed slightly. |

[FRANKFURT] The European Central Bank is poised to impose negative interest rates on its overnight depositors, seeking to cajole banks into lending instead and to prevent the euro zone falling into Japan-like deflation.
At its meeting on Thursday, ECB policymakers may also launch a loan programme for banks with strings attached to make sure the money actually gets out into the eurozone economy. It will be the first of the "Big Four" central banks - ECB, Bank of England, Bank of Japan and US Federal Reserve - to go the negative interest rate route, essentially charging banks to deposit with it. Even though the risks are limited of the eurozone entering a spiral of falling prices, slowing growth and consumption, the ECB is increasingly concerned that persistently low inflation and weak bank lending could derail the recovery. |
