Share price gain in 2020: 575.0 per cent

Market Capitalisation: $655.0 million

While Oceanus is the 5th best performing stock on SGX with a return of 575 per cent, we also need to note that it is listed in the  SGX Watchlist  (it is in the process of being removed). Nevertheless, Yaacob Ibrahim joined Oceanus as an independent director on Sept 1,  2020 after ending his political career. During the year, it has also invested in a prawn breeding company.

Oceanus is a marine aquaculture specialist selling premium quality Japanese abalones. Giving the group a cost advantage, the group farms the abalone inland in tanks located along the coastal lines of Fujian and Shandong.

to Lugx76@ depends on u see it. dont take SGrean investor eyes to look at shares is my advice. does not mean brand name cannot fail. think Hyflux? Think Semb Marine? many others. Oceanus made $$$ for you from 0.006 to 0.052 the least u could do is to not talk down oceanus. happy for ur winnings, now go on to find the next MB counter.

I initially struggled with the the idea of such a massive valuation of Oceanus at $0.40 per share too.  However, the consideration of market capitalisation is less meaningful for growth companies (e.g. tech).  I hope to offer my 4 Oceanus shares (read: 2 cents) and explain why.
  1. Market Cap. does not equate to the value of a company
This is a common misconception people fall for.  At the current share price, Tesla has a current market cap. of USD802.53billion (source Yahoo).  Does that mean Tesla has USD802.53billion worth of assets?  No.   

Market capitalisation is simply the last traded price x circulating supply.  If there are only 1,000 apple seeds in the world, and someone buys an apple seed at $1.  The market cap. of apple seeds is $1,000/-.  If tomorrow every store owner expects the price of apple seeds to rise, they are likely to hold on to their apple seeds and thus, reduce the supply.  The next day, suppose a buyer is desperate to buy apple seeds and after a long search, finally finds a seller offering it at $5 each.  He buys it.  The market cap. of apple seeds would have increased by 5x overnight.  Just like that.   

This is why market cap. is seldom the metric used to value a company, much less a growth company where buyers buy on a future growth aspects of a company.  Market cap. does not in any way indicate the health, wealth, or potential of a company.
  1. You cannot compare the Market Cap of one company to the Market Cap of another
Let' s say my hip and savvy aunt opens a successful phone-repair shop and has 10,000 shares in her business.  She sells me 500 shares for $500 ($10 / share), making the market cap $100,000/-.

To contrast, let' s say Apple' s market cap is currently $2.4 trillion (it really is).

It does not mean that:
  • Apple' s market cap is way too high because my aunt' s phone-repair shop market cap is nowhere near that, and thus, Apple is due for a major correction
  • Aunt' s phone-repair shop' s market cap is way too undervalued compared to Apple' s market cap, and is a great buying opportunity before the next bull run
  1. Market Cap cannot be used to predict maximum share value
Simply because the supply of shares changes on an on-going basis.  The same way the supply of apple seeds is reduced because no store owner wants to sell.

If none of us on this forum decides to sell our existing Oceanus shares, the circulating supply of shares that new buyers could buy from will be significantly lesser, and thus, resulting in a higher (bid) price for the shares from remaining sellers.


Instead, what is more important is the narrative of the company.  That is what influences the price, via demand and supply.  It is not important to just consider where you think the company is going next, but where others  think the company is heading.  Is the company on the path of growth or decline (e.g. Amazon in online retail)?  Does the company continue to solve existing pain points of society (e.g. Grab in transport-on-demand)?  Is the company in trend on the next big thing (e.g. Tesla in EV)?

I believe Oceanus has the potential to go to $0.40, because it is a high growth food tech company solving a tangible, on-going concern of food security.  And for many other reasons previously stated.

 Alert Admin 		For me, I think $0.40 is kind of ambitious but not totally impossible. A possible target price could be around $0.10 due to a few catalysts this year such as the Q4 financial report and exiting of SGX watchlist. Oceanus profit has been soaring year after year and right now, they have no debt. This penny stock in my opinion is the safest among the rest. But I could be biased, do your own DD would be good :)

I bot Oceanus since 0.006 and took profit all the way till 5.2 cents.. left with 50 lots.. Pls tell me someting that i am missing out about this talk that it will go to 40cents. Appreciate much! I might consider reloading....
