There has been market talk about a potential privatisation of SMM, given that 1) SMM may need to raise funds should its outlook deteriorate, and 2) SMM' s share price has plunged to S $ 1.48, not too far off from the S $ 1.10 level in which SCI tried to privatise SMM in the early 2000' s. There is also speculation that a merger with Keppel may eventually take place. Valuations now and then At S $ 1.48, SMM is now trading at 1.0x book, below the 1.6x book level at which SCI tried to privatise SMM then. The difference, however, is that SMM then was looking at a potential upturn in the rig business but now the opposite is true. Hence a lower valuation than 1.6x should be expected if any party were to make an offer for SMM. SDP has done a fabulous job to highlight these concerns as no men-in-white has dared to open their mouths to speak up on the repercussions of such a collapse on the economy and citizens funds.
