x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	9/11/2017, 2 hours ago Maybank KE Retail Research Best World 3Q17 net profit jumped 36.4% to $12.2m, bringing 9M17 earnings to $33.9m (+52.1%) or 78.5% of full-year street estimate, ahead of the seasonal 4Q peak. On a q/q basis, sales growth slowed to 1.8%. However, revenue slid 10.3% to $46.8m as a slump in Taiwan sales (-46%) overshadowed healthy export sales to China (+33.3%) from greater adoption of its DR' s Secret skincare products. Sales in Indonesia improved 12.8% due to a switch in strategy from weight management to skin care products The sales weakness in Taiwan persisted as the direct seller halted price discounting and promotions since 1Q17 in order to improve earnings quality. Management expects a gradual recovery from 2018 onwards on the lower base. On the flip side, operations in China showed no signs of a negative impact following the government' s clampdown against illegal pyramid schemes in Aug this year. Gross margin contracted 4.4ppt to 67.2% due to the shift in sales mix towards the relatively lower priced export segment, but operating margin improved 10.4ppt to 36.9% as export sales do not incur selling commissions. Going forward, management expects growth momentum in China to sustain and that the decline in Taiwan will be sufficiently buffered for FY17. Maybank KE believes that China is expected to deliver healthy future growth as Best World seeks to expand geographically to other key cities beyond Hangzhou. The application for direct selling license has already started and should include at least seven provinces by end-2018. Additionally, Indonesia could be transformed into a key growth market as the group taps into the halal market in 2019, after the opening of its halal-certified factory in Singapore. Best World remains a key constituent of the Market Insight growth basket. While earnings growth could undergo a gestation period due to reduced Taiwan sales over the next few quarters, the longer-term outlook from the key China market remains intact.
