Final spectrum prices are much lower than expected
● As we had earlier expected, Singtel and Antina won the maximum allowed lots. How ever, the spectrum price is much low er than the S$130-195m w e had believed that each may have to pay (assuming final prices were 3x the reserve price) as it appears that TPG did not bid aggressively. The final price of each lot was S$15.5m, only 29% higher than the reserve price, w hile the FROR lots w ere allocated to Singtel, StarHub and M1 at just S$3m each. ● For StarHub, its S$26.3m share of the 2.1GHz spectrum payment (i.e. 50% of Antina?s) represents S$78.8m savings (4.5 Scts/share) over w hat w e had factored into our forecasts. For Singtel, the impact of 2.1GHz payment is immaterial. ● Posttheaward,TPGwillhaveaccesstothe2.1GHz(2x10MHz)spectrum,inaddition to 900MHz (2x10MHz), 2.3GHz (40MHz) and 2.5GHz (10MHz). Ex-millimetre w ave, its total spectrum holdings of 90MHz is still much less than Singtel?s 325MHz, StarHub?s 225MHz and M1?s 185MHz (based on the latter two?s 50% share of Antina?s 2.1GHz and 3.5GHz spectrum). TPG will use the 2.1GHz to deploy 5G as added capacity (possibly in carrier aggregation with the 2.3GHz spectrum, though there is a limited compatible device ecosystem thus far) and indoors (may be able to re-use existing antenna systems), in our view. Given the relatively narrow bandwidth (5G ideally requires 80-100MHz), we think TPG will not be able to make use of the 2.1GHz to deliver 5G speeds that are much faster than on its existing 4G netw ork. |

From Goldman
Translation: brace for a face-ripping rally come Monday when carbon-based traders finally take over from the idiot algos. Below are more details from Goldman's London trader Borislav Vladimirov who penned his "Initial thoughts on risks from the B.1.1.529 variant and market implications." Main points While we do not have sufficient information to forecast a global B.1.1.529 wave, a high rate of transmission almost inevitably leads to a variant?s dominance. Nevertheless, the South Africa NICD (link to their Q&A here) note that this mutation is unlikely to be more malicious and that the existing vaccines will most likely continue to be effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths. The current PCR and antigen tests are expected to continue to identify the mutation. As such, while we would monitor the situation in Gauteng closely over the next month, we do not think that the new variant is sufficient reason to make major portfolio changes. Having said that, given the time of the year and liquidity as well as policy risks in December, investors could consider short term hedges for growth sensitive risky assets. We would start from what we know: The variant has a large number of mutations It has the P681 H spike protein mutation associated with the higher transmissibility of Delta Currently no unusual symptoms have been reported following infection with the B.1.1.529 variant and as with other variants some individuals are asymptomatic. It is easy to identify and hence monitor - The B.1.1.529 lineage has a deletion (△ 69-70) within the S gene that allowed for rapid identification of this variant in South Africa and will enable continued monitoring of this lineage irrespective of available sequence data. Most likely current PCR and Antigen test will continue to identify it well. Potentially high transmissibility has triggered market concern: It is gaining pace rapidly sequencing 90% of new cases just 2 weeks since emergence. For comparison the Delta needed 3 months to reach that intensity. This is the most concerning data point that has attracted market attention. One caveat is that the fast acceleration data could be skewed by location. The virus is spreading in Gauteng which is the largest and most densely populated province of SA. (15.2mio people with population density that is 17.3x higher than the country average) The level of restrictions in SA at the moment (measured by the government stringency index) is low (relative to Israel or Austria for example, see chart below). This can be helping faster spread that isn?t necessarily driven exclusively by the virus characteristics Cases of B.1.1.529 have been identified in Botswana, Israel and Hong Kong. If the variant is highly transmissible, it is most likely that it will eventually spread despite travel restrictions. What we still do not know... We have no information on the variant?s impact on hospitalizations and mortality. A careful monitoring of the Gauteng data over the next two weeks is essential. There are reports that two of the cases were fully vaccinated. This is a very small sample to make any conclusions and we do not know for how long the patients were vaccinated. What we know from Delta is that antibody levels wear off between 6 and 9 months after the second vaccine and that while the vaccines are less effective in preventing infection, they are still highly effective in preventing hospitalization and death. For the time being there is no reason to believe that this variant will be different in that respect. Will the Pfizer pill be effective against the new mutation? Is the European wave driven by the new variant? While the new variant could be present in Europe, the rapid rise in cases is driven by the Delta variant (see information below) The European data comes with about a month delay from sequencing time so we should know more by the third week of December (unless the process accelerates due to the attention on the new variant) Efforts to limit the current Delta wave in a number of European countries could help preventing the spread of B.1.1.529, if already present. Is the above a reason to be concerned? A very broad press focus in the past 24h has received high market attention. It will take weeks before we get additional official information and scientific evidence about the potential risks. This comes at a time when investors have been surprised by some of the lockdown measures announced in Europe And also when real growth is likely to fall meaningfully on higher inflation (even though nominal growth is likely to stay well above average) At this time of the year positions in risky assets, especially after strong YTD gains, could be vulnerable to short term corrections (ie 2018 template) Travel restrictions will delay the process of logistics network normalization which would imply that the supply capacity constraints easing anticipated for H2-2022 might take longer to materialize. Meanwhile, monetary policy has recently shifted gears to signal faster removal of accommodation which could add to a short-term risk aversion into the December FOMC. Conclusion: while we do not have sufficient information to forecast a global B.1.1.529 wave, a high rate of transmission almost inevitably leads to a variant dominance. Nevertheless, we can have reasonable degree of confidence that this mutation is unlikely to be more malicious and that the existing vaccines will most likely continue to be effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths. As such, while we would monitor the situation in Gauteng closely over the next month, we do not think that the new variant is sufficient reason to make major portfolio changes.

Omicron Variant First Detected In Four "Fully Vaxx'd" People, SA Medical Chief Only Seen "Very, Very Mild Cases"
The new ?Omicron? variant of COVID-19 was first detected in four people who were fully vaccinated, according to a public statement by the Botswana government The new variant, which some claim is three times more contagious, was initially discovered in Botswana before it spread across South Africa. The news was met with global alarm, prompting financial markets to plummet and new travel bans to be put in place. According to a public statement by the Botswana government, the new mutation was first discovered in four people who had received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the report, four cases of the new variant ?were reported and recorded? on November 22. ?The preliminary report revealed that all the four had been completely vaccinated for COVID-19,? according to Botswana authorities. In a subsequent statement, the government revealed that the new variant ?was detected on four foreign nationals who had entered Botswana on the 7th November 2021, on a diplomatic mission The quartet tested positive for COVID-19 on the 11th November 2021 as they were preparing to return,? according to the statement. In a piece of good news, others who had close contact with the infectees ?have no COVID-19 symptoms and have tested negative for COVID-19.? As we highlighted earlier, according to Belgian Prime Minister , the Omicron variant is so potentially devastating that it should be called ?COVID-21?. Meanwhile, South Africa?s medical chief Dr. Angelique Coetzee described the panic as a ?storm in a teacup,? adding that she had only seen ?very very mild cases? of the variant so far |

Escape variants are those that elude the targeted immune response brought about by vaccination. Pfizer and BioNTech would be able to redesign their shot within six weeks and ship initial batches within 100 days, BioNTech added.
BioNTech ADRs gained 14.2% to close at $348 on Friday and Pfizer shares rose 6.1% to end at $54. Moderna gained 20.6% to close at $329.63. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/biontech-says-expect-more-data-new-variant-2-weeks-2021-11-26/

The impact the new variant will have on vaccines could become clear relatively soon. BioNTech SE, which works with Pfizer Inc. on the world?s best-selling Covid vaccine, said it?s beginning lab studies on the variant and should have the first data on how it interacts with the vaccine within two weeks.
BioNTech and Pfizer have long promised that they?ll be able to roll out a new version of their vaccine within 100 days if necessary. Moderna Inc. is also studying how well its current vaccine booster dose neutralizes omicron, with data likely in the coming weeks. The company said on Friday that it is also working on a high-dose version of the booster, new multivalent boosters and a new booster specific to omicron. Moderna said it is typically able to get new experimental vaccines into testing in 60 to 90 days. Mutations may also help omicron elude the antibody treatments, such as Roche Holding AG and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc.?s Ronapreve, that have become a mainstay of therapy for people who can?t muster an adequate immune response on their own, ICL?s Barclay and other scientists said. Roche?s researchers are studying the new variant, said spokesman Karsten Kleine, and it?s too early to say how it will interact with the antibody cocktail. GlaxoSmithKline Plc, which markets a Covid antibody with Vir Biotechnology Inc., said it believes its antibody will probably work against the variant because it targets part of the spike protein that?s shared among many different, distantly related coronaviruses. The company is working urgently to confirm that in the lab, it said in a statement. Antiviral Arsenal Even if the new variant resists vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, doctors won?t be out of weapons. Antivirals such as the experimental pill being developed by Pfizer Inc. will probably still work, Barclay said. That?s because of the way those pills act in the body. Instead of targeting the virus?s spike protein, as vaccines and other treatments do, they attack in different way to prevent the virus from multiplying. That makes the new variant?s spike-protein mutations less likely to resist the pills. ?There are no mutations that would signal a change in susceptibility,? Barclay said. The antivirals aren?t approved for use yet. Pfizer on Nov. 16 filed for an emergency-use authorization for the medicine in the U.S. a similar review began in the European Union three days later. A second pill, from Merck & Co., ran into a hurdle after trial results showed it was less effective than had been thought. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration staff raised questions about whether it could cause birth defects, bone and cartilage toxicity and genetic mutations. A panel of FDA advisers will meet Tuesday to review the pill.

SINGAPORE ? Singapore tech unicorn Grab is determined to redesign Southeast Asia?s underserved financial markets, with the head of its finance unit saying now is a ?once in a lifetime? opportunity to drive financial inclusion in the region.
In a webinar on the future of finance organized by Nikkei on Thursday, Reuben Lai, senior managing director of Grab Financial Group, said the company was ?ready to drive financial inclusion across Southeast Asia? through its digital-based services and to create ?economic empowerment for millions of Southeast Asians.? Finance is one of Grab?s core businesses along with ride-hailing and food delivery, and it is expected to be a key growth driver for the company after its U.S. listing, which could happen as soon as early December. Currently it offers the GrabPay e-wallet, insurance and wealth management among other services, targeting young white-collar workers, Grab?s ride-hailing drivers and small- and medium-sized enterprises ? in which Lai said the company has discovered ?a huge under-met need.? For financial inclusion, or the ability of individuals and businesses to access financial services that meet their needs, Lai said one key driver will be digital banking. Grab has already won a digital banking license in Singapore through a joint venture with Singapore Telecommunications and is preparing for the launch, expected next year. The new banking company has already hired 200 people, Lai said. Southeast Asia?s traditional banks such as Singapore?s DBS Group Holdings are also investing heavily in the digital space. But Lai said he does not see these banks as competition ?at all.? ?We see huge investments [by traditional banks] in consumer experiences across the region. That?s great for the consumers, but our focus is really on the underserved,? he said. ?For us, it is the six out of 10 who are underserved by banks, the nine out of 10 who don?t have access to credit cards ? all across Southeast Asia. That?s our target segment.? Grab has also applied for a digital bank license in Malaysia and is looking for digital bank opportunities in the rest of the region. ?We continue to look across Southeast Asia for other exciting opportunities, to reinvent banking,? he said. ?The journey is so exciting. And yet, it?s so far ahead. For me, this is such an exciting role I have, and all my teammates share the same enthusiasm ? once in a lifetime to bring financial inclusion at scale across Southeast Asia.? He said Grab has learned the ins and outs of the financial business from existing partners such as Japan?s Credit Saison and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, as well as Chinese insurance group ZhongAn. For example, through a partnership with Thailand?s Bank of Ayudhya, an MUFG group bank, Grab looked at ?how to serve the merchants better through joint credit scoring,? he said. Another expected source of growth will be the ?buy now, pay later? service, which enables customers to buy items, without interest payments. Grab receives commission from merchants. Grab launched its buy now, pay later function in late 2020, targeting people who do not have a credit card. In a separate interview, head of GrabPay and GrabRewards Chris Yeo told Nikkei that the company currently operates this service in Singapore and Malaysia and will roll it out in other markets in the region from next year. Yet Grab?s financial business is still making losses. The segment?s revenue for the July-September quarter was $14 million, while its EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) was negative $76 million, suggesting huge costs for scaling the business. Some of Grab?s products, such as micro wealth management, allow users to make investments from just one Singapore dollar ($0.74). Asked in the webinar whether such a business model of selling small products is sustainable, Lai said his company could keep its cost base very low by using automation and technology to scale such business for its target customers. ?Once you open up this addressable market, we believe that the size of the revenue opportunity is very significant, in addition to the chance to do good for Southeast Asia,? he said. ?We?re working hard at it, and hopefully, over the next five to 10 years, we see banking and financial services redesign and redefine Southeast Asia.? |
