Some compared global telcos like Verizon with Singtel and said something like it's a business that is always profitable. No doubt telcos biz is needed for connectivity but Singtel today is not a pure telco play but also in tech like data centers which seems to sure make money. No doubt data will grow exponentially without stop but is it an overkill now? What has driven the need for more data centers? The AI hype. Once AI bubble burst, Singtel will be the 1st among our 3 listed telcos to bleed. Fun fact: I have been a loyal user of Singtel services and has never used other telcos before :) | ||||

The release of this news at lunch break today (12.30pm) and publicity by media at 3pm is very strange. I hold a short position on Singtel and shorted it based purely on technical playa and wasn't aware until 9pm. To me, this news is immaterial to its bottomline. The news threw in a few big names with Ant, Ayaya and MUFG as the JV for Mynt (now valued at US$5Bn). What transpired was that Ayala and MUFG agreed to invest US$393M each to MYNT. For simplicity, US$800M will be injected into Mynt bringing Ayala's and MUFG's share to 13% and 8% respectively. Therefore, Global telecom and Ant stakes in Mynt will be diluted naturally. What is Global Telecom? I don't know and I don't care. It is said that Global Telecom owns 33.5% of Mynt currently and Singtel is Global Telecom's major shareholder at 22.3%. The last few sentences preceding this is just for info.
In summary, Singtel did not fork out anything and stake in Mynt got diluted. So what's so significant about this news? Nothing except that with more funds into Mynt then it may grow bigger but will that translate to bigger profits for Mynt?
Maintain short on Singtel :)

From India to Philippines, I don' t think any other counter in the SGX has that many exciting developments recently... It would be interesting to see how it all pans out and if it contributes positively to Singtel' s bottom line in the years to come...

I believe Singtel will continue to maintain or grow it' s dividend in the years to come... Even if it maintains the 15 cents dividend, at current prices, this is quite attractive with a yield of 5.1%.. When interest rates do go down, this yield will be even more attractive... Continue to hold long while enjoying the dividends... |
