https://sg.news.yahoo.com/poor-pilot-emergency-training-behind-airasia-crash-analysts-064011651.html Malaysia-based AirAsia. QZ8501 was the first major crash. Analysts said the findings could prove a setback after a successful 13-year run. " The flight crew had not been trained for the upset recovery training on Airbus A320," said the report, adding that the plane had gone into a " prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the crew to recover" . it was the pilot' s decision to reset the system, which turned off the plane' s autopilot, and inexperience in flying in such difficult conditions that then sent the aircraft into a sharp roll from which it never recovered.

Faulty equipment and crew' s " inability to control the aircraft" led an AirAsia A320 to crash into the Java Sea last year, killing all 162 people onboard. Flight QZ8501 went down in stormy weather on December 28, from city of Surabaya to Singapore. The crash of Airbus A320-200 triggered a huge international search, with ships and aircraft from several nations involved in a lengthy hunt that was hampered by strong currents and bad weather. The bodies of 56 victims were never recovered. In their final report into the accident released. Indonesia' s official National Transportation Safety Committee said a major factor was a fault with a system that helps control the rudder' s movement. Cracked soldering in the component caused it to malfunction and send repeated warning messages to the pilots. After received the fourth warning, the pilots pulled circuit-breakers on one of the aircraft' s computers, removing power from the faulty system in a bid to reset it. But in doing so, they also turned off the plane' s autopilot. " Subsequent flight crew action resulted in inability to control the aircraft," said the report. The plane went into a " prolonged stall condition that was beyond the capability of the crew to recover" , it said. It added the flight data recorders did not indicate the weather had affected the aircraft. The report said the faulty component, the Rudder Travel Limiter, had suffered 23 problems in the past 12 months, citing maintenance records. - String of aviation disasters - A minister previously described how the plane climbed fast and then went into aerodynamic stall, losing lift, before it went down, while an investigator said the warning alarms were " screaming" as the pilots desperately tried to stabilise the aircraft. Investigators had also revealed that the French co-pilot, Remi Plesel, was at the controls of the AirAsia plane in the moments before it crashed, rather than the more experienced pilot, Captain Iriyanto, who had around 20,000 hours of flying time. Rescuers said the plane was eventually located on the seabed by a Singapore navy ship and both black box data recorders were recovered. Search efforts were finally called off in March after almost three months of hunting. It was one of several aviation disasters in the sprawling archipelago in the past year, and the first major setback for Malaysia-based AirAsia group and its flamboyant boss Tony Fernandes after a spectacular run of success. In August, a turbo-prop plane operated by Indonesian domestic carrier Trigana crashed in the remote, eastern region of Papua during a short flight in bad weather, killing all 54 people on board. And in June an Indonesian military plane went down into a residential neighbourhood in the city of Medan, exploding in a fireball and killing 142 people. Indonesian airlines are expanding rapidly after years of strong economic growth led to the emergence of a new middle class, who have the money to fly around the archipelago of more than 17,000 islands rather than travel by road or sea. Existing infrastructure is inadequate and carriers are struggling to find enough well-trained personnel to keep up with the boom, experts say.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 ―   Dr Mahathir can only fault himself if he has repressive laws that curb civil rights and liberties, Former prime minister was responsible for laying the foundation of M' sia' s existing policies on human rights and freedom of expression. &ldquo We inherited whatever laws that were passed during his time. If he is criticising now, he should look at himself in the mirror,&rdquo Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz told Malay Mail Online in an interview.. &ldquo The foundation was laid out during his time as Prime Ministry, he (Mahathir) didn' t listen to any voices back then on reforms,&rdquo the Padang Rengas MP explained. Yesterday the Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said it is &ldquo unacceptable&rdquo for Mahathir to demand freedom of speech from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as the former was responsible for creating the repressive environment Malaysia&rsquo s media and civil societies currently live in. HRW Asia Director Brad Adams added that the criminalisation of dissent in Malaysia became systemic from when Mahathir, the country&rsquo s longest-serving prime minister, was in power. &ldquo Najib in a way is (a) child of Dr Mahathir&rsquo s, the tactics are systemic. The laws and intervention are on the books, waiting to be used when the time is right. &ldquo Which is why I poked at Dr Mahathir earlier, he is the father of this and for him to stand up in public and complain that there is a lack of free speech or a lack of democracy is really unacceptable. &ldquo He should just be quiet and he should let other people go to the forefront to discuss these very serious issues,&rdquo Adams said during the release of the HRW report titled &ldquo Creating a Culture of Fear: the Criminalisation of Peaceful Expression in Malaysia&rdquo . Dr Mahathir has been among the most vocal critics of 1Malaysia Development Berhad in the Barisan Nasional and has demanded Najib take responsibility for his brainchild work. The 90-yr-old retired, had also joined in the 2-day Bersih 4 rally in KL, and urged Malaysians to use their &ldquo people power&rdquo to push for Najib&rsquo s removal through a no-confidence vote in Parliament. Dr Mahathir&rsquo s tenure was also marked by oppressive moves like the jailing of his deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Ops Lalang, a security crackdown purportedly over fears of racial clashes stemming from allegations of interference in Chinese vernacular education. Ops Lalang was later perceived as a move to quash political dissent as over 100 mainly-opposition figures were detained. In an interview with UK daily The Guardian last week, Dr Mahathir admitted to committing &ldquo undemocratic&rdquo acts in his time, but insisted that his busive actions differed from the current administration&rsquo s,  insisting he  claimed is not abusive. |

"According to Zahid, the priority is to focus on strengthening the party and supporting the leadership," it said.
Ahmad Zahid at the press conference was asked on Muhyiddin's claim that former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had wanted Muhyiddin, and not Najib Abdul Razak, to replace fifth prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
This was after the 2008 general election, Muhyiddin claimed, but Najib ended up succeeding Abdullah as he was deputy Umno president while Muhyiddin was only vice-president at the time.
Ahmad Zahid responded by saying Muhyiddin should not be nostalgic and face reality.
He also said anyone who questions the president's leadership should join another organisation and let the people decide who is better in the general election.
Below is the relevant excerpt of the transcript, translated from Bahasa Malaysia, and the original voice recording:
Reporter: Muhyiddin in Johor Bahru yesterday said he was Mahathir's first choice as prime minister but he remained loyal to Najib as deputy prime minister. We want to know what was the actual situation at the time.
Ahmad Zahid: I feel that in politics, reality(hakikat) is the main element to determine one's position.
I respect what he said and I respect his feelings, but I feel that we need to face reality, that is we need not be nostalgic over something that had taken place, but never became reality.
What we need to interpret is that at the time, it was something that we saw as supporting the organisation which we were in. This is what we need to respect and not give differing views.
We need to support the current leadership because this has been determined by the rakyat in the last general election.
If any individual feels that someone should not be at the leadership position, that individual should offer himself to another organisation and prove to the rakyat that he is better than our current leader.
It is better to wait for the next general election so all can step into the ring and see who the rakyat chooses.
Reporter: Muhyiddin's statement makes it seem like Mahathir's choice of prime minister should be prioritised.
If that's the case, Mahathir should be prime minister. Is he the one who should determine who becomes prime minister? Shouldn't this be determined through party structures?
I think this is the most I will say.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainuddin:I want to tell you that it was YAB Tun (Mahathir) who appointed Pak Lah (Abdullah) as prime minister.
He appointed Pak Lah. He did not appoint Muhyiddin at the time, so how can Muhyiddin say he was chosen when Pak Lah was the one.
And then Pak Lah appointed someone else as deputy prime minister. We can't stir up old stories.
For the time being, we accept the reality that Datuk Najib is the prime minister and YAB Datuk Zahid is deputy prime minister.
This is the reality. The rakyat needs to know.
I understand that it is difficult for the deputy prime minister to answer given his position.
But the rakyat needs to understand the structures in our country.
The important thing is that the prime minister has the power, the prerogative to appoint his deputy.
No outsider can determine who becomes the deputy prime minister or who becomes the prime minister.

In 1969, UMNO reneged on the 1957 constitution. Since then, Mahathir 22 years ruled had  gradually dismantled rule of law, independence of the institutions, removed all controls and even institutionalised corruption and racism. How about that?.
