Great timing on NOL announcement on possible sales of APL Logistic. Please share if anyone has any info or analyst reports that will be able to project the impact to the gearing and interest expense and NAV to assess the likely TP.

IPO will more than likely get more for NOL given the market excitement and optimism over logistic asset which is in great demand and a growth sector due partly to surge in ecommerce. Sales on market will allow NOL to realise the money probably faster. Good that they keep the options open. It will also depend on the investment bankers who will want to underwrite the IPO as it will have to establish the potential and advise the IPO pricing. Exciting days ahead for NOL which will pan out over next few months.

NOL just issued a clarification on SGX. This is good as it confirms their plan though preliminary rather than to dispute the media article as 'rumour'.
There has been a media report that Neptune Orient Lines Limited ("NOL") is planning a sale of its logistics business. NOL wishes to state that it continually evaluates all available options to improve the strategic positioning and performance of its businesses. These include considerations of a potential sale or initial public offering ("IPO") and listing of its logistics business as a separate, stand-alone unit from NOL. These considerations are preliminary and exploratory in nature. There is no assurance that any definitive transaction for the sale or an IPO of NOL's logistics business will be concluded. NOL shareholders and prospective investors are therefore advised to exercise caution when dealing in NOL shares and its other securities. NOL will release further announcements if and when there are any material developments. Looi Lee Hwa (Ms)/Wong Kim Wah (Ms) Company Secretaries 20 August 2014, Singapore

I was saying that  only fools interpret long-term view as [die die hold it for a long period of time regarding of what happens in the world or his world] but you said that I was deadly not right and then went on to talk about your disappointment in NOL and APL. I am confused??? |

My appologies but I do not see the link between your following comment and mine. It is off the tangent. Have I missed something?

You are deadly not wrong... and deadly not right too, again. My investment horizon is about 1-2 yrs. So, yes, I was disappointed with NOL Q2 result as you are dead right pointed out earlier given that I started accumulating NOL Aug last year. As some of the forumers here, we have anticipated that there can be a few scenarios that can work out for NOL. I'm glad that one of the measures - unlocking its asset to realize its potential may finally e happening. It still has APL Terminal. The interesting point is the timing of the intent. If NOL has done it earlier when the liners business is bleeding and getting worst, disposing of profit generating asset while can help to lower hearing will make their annual loss looking worst. So, it may be quite clear that NOL is expecting its liners business to be profitable again and the timing is right now to unlock its gem to lower its gearing and significantly improve its financial health. I'm not able to calculate the impact of selling away APL Logistics for US$750m on its interest expense as well as NPV right away. This will help to establish the fair price of NOL. Something a 'long term' investor will be interested to find out - the value and worth of a stock, present and not too distant future.

Ha ! There you go again. Die die you are not wrong. You can be dead right and also dead wrong. Things are not simple as you have so cleverly structured and timed your argument according to your position. Anyway,?whatever, we all make our decision according to our appetite and targets. So no wrong or right but don't keep criticizing others.

If NOL rises substantially over the next week or so to the extent that it is considered over-priced, especially when it hits a resistent level with limited upside and starting to attractive more short selling,  one would be a fool not to take profit. Of course, given that Lucky03 average cost price is likely to be higher than the bros who bought around the price of 0.95, he may not have any profit to take. Therefore, he may not have a choice but to remain a diehard longist.

One of the measures that some of us have been saying for a while. Unlocking the potential and gem asset.
PUBLISHED AUGUST 20, 2014 Singapore shipper Neptune Orient looks to sell logistics unit: sources PRINT |EMAIL THIS ARTICLE [NEW YORK] Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines is looking to sell its APL Logistics division with the hope of fetching more than US$750 million, according to people familiar with the situation. Shipping and logistics company Neptune is comprised of two major divisions - APL Logistics, a global freight management and logistics business, and a separate container shipping business named APL. Neptune plans to launch a process in the fall to find a buyer for APL Logistics and has hired banks to assist with that effort, the sources said, asking not to be named. A representative for Neptune had no immediate comment. |

Transpacific container lines try for yet another $600 per feu increase
By Marcus Hand from Singapore Container lines on the transpacific trade are making another attempt to raise rates. The Transpacific Stabilization Agreement (TSA) said member lines were proposing a 1 September general rate increase (GRI) of not less than $600 per feu for all destinations in the US from Asia. Lines cited strong cargo demand and high utilisation levels and rising inland transportation costs as the reason for the GRI.It is the latest in a series of rate increases, the most recent being another $600 per feu GRI on 1 August. However, lines have struggled to make the increases stick. Although TSA is claiming ?modest revenue gains? year a report by Bimco last week said that spot rates from Asia to the US West Coast had actually fallen 14% between January and August this year. ?Lines have made modest revenue gains to date this year, but they continue to struggle in terms of returning to profitability,? ?In most route segments they are operating at or near full capacity with little room for error in managing assets, so this increase is needed as a cushion to cover costs and assure service choice and reliability,? said TSA executive administrator Brian Conrad. |

Smaller not necessary will lose out. Growth in containership volume is evident in many markets.
Wan Hai records strong earnings on higher shipping volumes By Lee Hong Liang from Singapore Taiwan?s Wan Hai Lines has posted strong improvement in earnings in the first half of 2014 as shipping volumes rose. Net profit in the first half ended 30 June 2014 jumped to TWD1.73bn ($57.73m) from TWD551m in the previous corresponding period. Revenue in the first six months also grew 9.6% year-on-year to TWD31.41bn due mainly to a 7.2% annual increase in shipping volumes. Wan Hai, which generates a majority of its revenue from the shorter intra-Asia container shipping routes, also posted a second quarter profit of TWD1.08bn, a jump of 152% year-on-year. Wan Hai has outperformed its fellow Taiwanese lines, Evergreen Marine and Yang Ming Marine Transport, despite being the smallest of the three lines. Evergreen recorded a second quarter profit of TWD150.2m while Yang Ming registered a profit of TWD224.5m. Both Evergreen and Yang Ming returned to the black as against a loss in the same quarter of 2013. |

NOL has recaptured its 100d MA. Look out for spike up with heavy volume that likely signal potential re-rating by analysts and institutional investors.
If NOL rises significant over next few days, perhaps counter will have some new inspiration for new angles and views to share with us that will signal him to take profit again ? Whatever, that will still be positive for all and sure hope this time round, the turnaround is a mid term one that will propel it above its year's high of 1.15 in Sep 13 and near 1.35 in Jan 13.

If you sold some of your NOL shares because you expected them to fall in the short term significantly due to  various factors, it would be fine, even if you held a long-term view. There is really nothing wrong with making short-term tactical moves even if you have a long-term strategic view. Of course, predictions can go wrong but this is fine as this is all parts and parcels of investing which  happens to everyone. This is especially so when you did not make  a loss. Besides, there are alternative uses of your funds which may or may not generate higher returns. So do not feel stupid on your earlier decision. I sold my NOL shares and made a small profit. However, it was not a profit-taking move. Rather, it was due to  my assessment of the Ukraine crisis influenced by the increased intensity of attack by government forces on the separatists rebels which would likely prompt more Russian involvement. Of course, not all bros here  share my assessment of the Ukraine crisis and this is normal. How can some bros here share my assessment when they do not even know that  the economic sanctions are imposed on Russia and the EU rather than on Ukraine? My picking of some NOL shares might have contributed to the drastic jump in the price to some extent :)
