There was no asset sales story back then. Purely on technical retracement. This time now, there are both recovery story plus asset sales to support the mini rally. I'm sure analysts are also making many guess games

Note that China 'was still worried the 2M alliance could erode the bargaining power of China's import-export firms against big shipping companies.' How else they need to worry if not for fear that it will result in higher freight rate ? If lower, then why worry ? SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Maersk Line plans to launch its new vessel sharing service with MSC Mediterranean as early as January next year, and expects to notify customers of the network and transit times by September. The world's largest container shipper, part of Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO), and Swiss firm Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) reached an agreement on ship-sharing in July, a month after China's Ministry of Commerce blocked a larger plan by the two firms and France's CMA CGM [CMACG.UL] due to competition concerns. The global industry has been battling overcapacity since the financial crisis because new vessels ordered before the downturn have flooded the market. With freight rates still in the doldrums, the companies hope their new effort at pooling ships will help them reduce operating costs. The container shipper gave notice of the new, so-called 2M vessel sharing agreement (VSA) to China's Ministry of Transport in July, Maersk China's Managing Director Jens Eskelund told reporters in a briefing in Shanghai on Wednesday. Eskelund said that unlike the earlier plan, known as P3, the 2M service did not need approval from the commerce ministry. The two partners were only required to file details of the deal with the transport ministry. The Ministry of Commerce had said earlier that they rejected the P3 alliance because the three firms would have had more than 40 percent of Asia-Europe and trans-Atlantic trade, crucial paths in the global trade of goods. Director-general of the Commerce Ministry's anti-monopoly bureau, Shang Ming, said in an interview with China's state broadcaster last month that he was still worried the 2M alliance could erode the bargaining power of China's import-export firms against big shipping companies. Eskelund, though, said the market share to be held by Maersk Line and MSC on the Asia-Europe route would be similar to what other shipping alliances held. "Other alliances have been able to operate similar market shares to the ones that we will have on Asia-Europe," Eskelund said. Analysts said 2M would give the shippers less than 30 percent capacity share on the Asia-Europe shipping route. Other alliances operating on the Asia-Europe route include G6 - made up of six shippers including Neptune Orient Lines Ltd (NEPS.Si) and Nippon Yusen KK . The pick-up in shipments abroad offered some good news after figures last week showed the economy suffered its biggest quarterly contraction since the 2011 quake-tsunami disaster as an April sales tax rise slammed the brakes on growth. The latest trade figures will likely be a relief for Japanese authorities amid concerns that the yen's plunge since late 2012 has not translated into a big jump in export growth as domestic firms shift production overseas. Japan's exports in July rose 3.9 per cent on-year to 6.19 trillion yen, the first rise in three months, thanks to robust shipments of automobiles and electronic equipment such as parts for smartphones.

Lucky03      ( Date: 14-Aug-2014 19:15) Posted: NOL closed 0.96 to break above its 50d MA which it last crossed about 3 mths ago. If it breaks above 0.98, it will have recapture its 100d MA which is potentially a key turning point. It usually will experience a spike up whenever it successfully crossed above its 100d MA. Previous spike up has been in the range of 7c-20c but it dropped thereafter due to negative sentiment in overall shipping industry and depressed freight rate. The sentiment may be slightly less gloomy compared to 6 mths back when N. America was suffering from severed and prolonged winter. Geo-political risk aside, there is a better chance of sustainable turnaround this time. We will see if NOL can rise above 0.98 over next few days. As for geo-political risk, chances is that it will be confined to Ukraine as there is no serious political agenda for distraction inside Russia to justify escalation of the conflict to a world war.
