You speak as though CDG of a sitting duck waitjng to be shot and there is no company in this world that can do s ride-hailing business. 1) CDG can't invest more overseas? can't expand its PHV fleet? Can't pentrate into immature markets overseas? CDG has healthy cashflow. 2) no company in this world can set up ride-hailing business? Ride-hailing business is a low barrier entry business as it doesn't own any hard assets. Uber gone, now Go-jek, who is coming next, we don't know maybe after merging with go-jek, there is company C,D,E, F coming in? But we know that CDG is still surviving since Grab come to Singapore 8 years ago.

Before Grab is listed, of course it is possible to punt CDG shares if one has the guts. This is because many punter have no clue about how this company's business. No one believed Hyflux could collapes before it is too late.
Taxis drivers' and PHV drivers' business are now better than before Covid because everyone is locked in Singapore. But that does not mean that more people will drive CDG taxis. My speculation is there will be 2 crashes for this shares: 1. When Grab is listed 2. When Grab is included into STI Index and CDG taken out Meantime, happy punting!

Just in. Phase 3 from 28 Dec, I speculate CDG share price will rise to at least $2 by year end. Just look at how CDG share price shot up in 2003 after SARS ended in Singapore. DYODD. | ||||

Not only Grab, but the entire PHV model of business was, and still is a threat to CDG Taxis, and in the long term, challenge its survival.
1. CDG Taxis used to be the World's biggest taxi company, but NO MORE. Numbers dont lie. Ever since Uber came in, taxi numbers in Singapore over the years dropped by more than 1000 per year on the average. Note : The number did not drop from 28,000+ to the present 16,000+ within this pandemic year but over the last 8 years. 2. What the gov did was good for the drivers but no good for CDG Taxis. From the drivers' perspective, there is no more advantage driving CDG taxis vs driving other taxis or PHV. The impending merger of Grab and GoJek apps will further marginalise the CDG app. Every increase of fares by Grab in furure will be a pull factor for the taxi drivers. 3. Grab is still a start-Up and is still burning money for expansion, R & D, infrastructure, marketing, new projects, etc. This does not mean its business model is not sustainable in the long term. In fact I think otherwise. 4. One plays this CDG stock only if one believes taxi is still a growth trade because there is a SBS and a Vicom stock to play for people who believe in a public bus/train contractor and vehicle inspector.

Our government will never allow this to happen here. That's why from the very beginning, it wanted t regulate the ride-hailing business, from the issuing of vocational lcence of the drivers to the latest ride-hailing licence for the operators. It also insisted on pasting the PHV stickers on phvs and paying high income tax by PHVs.
I am particularly impressed by our government of allowing taxi drivers to drive for all ride-hailing companies apps in the early stage and allowing taxi drivers to switch to driving PHVs with their existing taxi vocational licence. This makes the taxi drivers happy, as they can switch from taxis to phvs easily.
This should be the way, the government should help the taxi and PHV drivers.
As for taxi companies and grab, it is up to them to strive and survive in this competitive world. HDT Taxi is the latest casualty. It exited the taxi business this month.

Lol.
Actually both of us agree and disagree on certain points.
1) We agree that the number of CDG taxis is on a downtrend, and taxis in Singapore will be getting fewer and fewer and will lose its importance one day.
2) We agree that Grab is a formidable company, but disagree on the point that Grab is a threat to CDG's revenue and profit.
3) We agree that more taxi drivers use Grab apps, including CDG drivers, but disagree on its impact on CDG rentals,
4) We agree that in order for Grab to be profitable, it has to merge with Go-jek. But to me, the merger has yet to be approved by CCCS. However, we disagree on the impact of the merger on CDG. You think it is devastating to CDG but I think it will help CDG business as Grab and Go-jek will raise price, as what happened in Jul 2018 when CDG share price shot to $2.5+ after Grab and Uber merged.
Let's keep it this way.
Good discussion.

You are making too many assumprions hokpin. I talk facts and I collect information from different sources and do my analysis and I welcome healthy discussions. Just talk with reasons and counter me if you can. No need to make personal attacks like you did.
I know there are two taxi uncles in this forum but I have not seen them in this thread. I would welcome them to counter me too if they dont agree with me.

Obviously you did not read my previous posts about bus, train and taxis and even Vicom and driving school. I dont want to repeat them as you can find all of them in my posts. Undortunately 2 earlier threads were locked because of trolls. But still you can read some in the current thread and you will understand.
Grab will not be afraid to increase fares especially when it merge with GoJek because taxis have lost its critical mass. As more taxi drivers jump ship, it will lose even more of its critical mass. Riders will have no choice because they cant get taxis when they see Grab fare very high. If they try Tada or Ryde, they dont get PHV drivers to accept because all drivers want high fares. Riders either have to take bus, train or queue at the taxi stands for cheaper rides. Hence if taxi fares dont match Grab fares when the latter fares go up, some taxi drivers will surely jump ship. At this moment, taxi drivers and PHD are already enjoying better business than the pre-Covid time. The current number of taxis you see on the road vs the number of riders has reached a new equilibruim, meaning that it would increase too much more. Full-time Grab drivers at present earns double of taxi drivers for the same hours of driving before costs. Given this, I dont expect a brand new driver to opt for taxi if he wants to drive for a living. CDG's only source would be its ex-drivers but I dont think many will return once they have left.
