Developers must have at least the piece of land first before they can sell. Even before they sell, they have to have aprrovals from many authorties. Singapore is a small country, cannot afford to follow USA, one mistake will kill spore in a few years that spore  have have built up the last 50 years. The american short sellers are a swarm of sharks. Spore, watch out, we may be killed by all these sharks! For retailers, they must have their goods before they sell. For distributors, they are of different category (bigger than retailers). Likewise, many share owners of public listed companies are simliar to retailers, they are not big companies. That is why China has to put a stop of those owning a big chunk of shares from trading for a few months. If China' s market was nearly destroyed by short sellers, so can spore. Don' t ever believe what the american say, they are cannibalising the world.

One has to look deep into the problem.   On the surface seems very OK for short-selling. It is a matter of I buy you sell, vice versa. But think deeper into it, it can cause unreal, fake and improper, market situation. Eg.   If everyone starts to offer to sell HDB flat for $10,000 each, who would want to buy a flat for more than $10,000 in the meantime? If we sell a material short, who would pay better than the price we offer for the material in the meantime? Since everyone is waiting for a cheap and cheaper market, the true price of the stocks or products or materials would be depressed.   For tangible products, they might be ok since tangible products are useful or serviceable meaning providing some usage.   But for shares being paper only, they are not able to give a tangible economic use for anyone holding it, except that when someone is really interested in a takeover of the related company, which rarely the man in the street (common investor) could ever do. So think deeper into it, short selling is not a productive action.

Sg 50 may not be a day to remember as good day for Stock investors. However it is hope not that Singaporeans remember it as a gloom day amidst " patriotic" emotions. But still nowhere to be felt either way, lol.

Read the Straits Times forum, a Mr Leong has asked the authority not to let Spore to be the playing ground of short-sellers! As long as SGX is a public listed company, their main aim is to make money with efficiency came second and moral obligation last (Look at SMRT for past years under Ms Saw). Short-sellers have caused havocs in many countries and make stock trading into casinos. It is morally incorrect to sell something that sellers do not have!   |

I echo yr input and I think that AP market will rebound back 2nd half. May test 3500 soon. 1. Interest rate at most will up one time this year and its to be small increase which market has expected. ( good for banks anyway) 2. COmmodities and oil are all at or  close to  all time low ...how much more do we expect it to fall ...10% 3. China/HK market is officially support by Chinese gov....fm past history we know they can do what they plan to do ( like stopping 6 mths sale of large shareholders) 4. USA growth shld be on a better footing. 5. Europe greece issue is out of mind and emotionally good for market. Keeping my finger cross. :))

I am expecting a big recovery in Asia-Pac stock market come early next week especially on Monday, once the Greece debt issue is ironed out this weekend. STi should be enjoying one of its biggest gain this year if things are worked out in Eurozone. Have personally added more than a handful of counters since Thursday.   |
