Maybe insiders didn' t like the fact that so much money was spent to acquire a loss making company. Their biggest competitor Grab is still out there.

Valued at $642m but cash consideration is $295m. So what happens to the remaing $347m ? Disappear into thin air?  Quote: In a statement, ComfortDelGro said the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is valued at about $642 million, with a cash consideration of $295 million. Unquote   |

Leasing business is never loss making if properly managed and CDG is good at that. In LCR case is more likely due to redundant fleet that is not generating revenue. CDG has stated that will increase when necessary so they are likely to be taking over only productive fleets.
Next reason is due to special discounts give by Uber to attract drivers. With CDG as majority, Uber as a separate entity will need to pay for any subsidy they give to the lessees. CDG will only consolidate future earnings not historical losses.

So why was there such a large selldown? I would consider the LCR acquisition to be really good news for Comfort. So those who heard the news early before break, WHY SELL?

LCR cars are on average 2 to 3 years old. If I can buy a 3-year old car at $47k in Singapore, I consider myself lucky, it is a bargain!

This is a fantastic deal doe CDG. They are experienced in fleet management and the price of $295m works out to $47k per vehicle which is cheap. CDG get to benefit from leasing revenue and servicing. If Uber wants to reduce rental then Uber can subsidise all they want. CDG won't be so silly to burn cash to help uber.
The availability of uber app for taxis will bring great relief to taxi drivers and they will benefit from increase customer demand. So taxi drivers have little reason to jump ship. Alternatively they can always switch to be uber driver. Overall, I see CDG coming back in the game with this tie up. |

They just spent close to 0.3 billion dollars buying a loss making company. How is that good business sense?

And with PHVs, those taxi drivers interested will likely not jump ship to Grab, and passengers will are loyal to CDG taxis but also like PHVs will now not hesitate to book via Uber platform, just like JUSTGRAB. Anyway this is a acquistion, CDG has the final say how to run and rent its PHVs, it may sell off some of them if it is too many. With its enginering knowhow and technical workshops and in-house accident repairs technicians, who knows it may be able to sell petrol to 15,000 PHVs too.   |

It could be expensive but let' s take a look this way. CDG is going to downsize its fleet, its workshops will be empty, LCR 15,000 cars just fit into it.   As I estimated previously, the revenue to CDG Automotive Arm will be $1kx15,000 = $15 mil per year! Don' t forget accident repair and VICOM isnpection!!!    This is not a loose tie-up like Grab and SMRT and other taxi coys!   This is an ACQUISITION!   Brovo CDG, I salute your decision, this is more than alliance. |

Sounds like an expensive deal for CDG. Lion city rentals are not exactly a great business and it' s very likely loss making. For CDG to pay $295m to buy a loss making company doesn' t sound like good business sense. Besides, gaining more market share isn' t exactly going to help them when you have grab offering more promos to keep rentals low. Sounds like a poor deal for shareholders in the long run. |
