Oil Stockpiles Fell 8 Million Barrels Last Week: EIA (Jan 06, 2021 11:05AM ET) https://www.investing.com/news/commodities-news/oil-stockpiles-fell-8-million-barrels-last-week-eia-2381051 Investing.com -- Crude stockpiles fell more than expected last week, according to the latest government data. Crude inventories fell 8 million barrels, against a forecast for a 2.1 million-barrel draw, according to the Energy Information Administration. Demand has been an issue, weighing on oil prices. But that changed quickly on Tuesday, after Saudi Arabia announced it would cut 1 million barrels a day from production in February and March, sending crude futures and Brent crude prices 5% higher. Gasoline stocks rose 4.5 million barrels, well above the expected build of 1.5 million barrels. Distillate stocks rose 6.4 million barrels, more than the expected 2.3 million barrel build. Refinery crude runs rose 89,000 barrels and the refinery utilization rate was 1.3%. &ldquo Destocking, destocking, destocking. That&rsquo s what it is," said Investing.com analyst Barani Krishnan. " Never underestimate the power of year-end destocking by the trade to avoid paying taxes on inventories. Normally, something like happens in the earlier part of the year-end, but it looks like the trade waited until the very last moment this time. That explains the spike in refining utilization, to 80.7% operable capacity.&rdquo Krishnan added: &ldquo But something else quite phenomenal is happening and that is China, China, China. Yes, China is buying more U.S. crude than ever, taking exports to a staggering near-record level of 3.63 million barrels per day. For perspective, that is 33% of our production, which is stagnant at 11 million barrels per day, by EIA reporting.&rdquo Investors will be watching to see which way crude numbers go, he said. " My reckoning is the volatility has to smoothen out soon. On the fuels side, gasoline production itself decreased for last week, yet inventories were three times higher than expected. Ditto with distillates, a component that might only weaken further from here, given the end of the seasonal year-end trucking spike for holiday deliveries.&rdquo |
