He has already pointed out that BBs are not keen on this company, that' s why the share price pivoted. BERLIN (REUTERS, AFP) - The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has probably arrived in Germany, a minister in the western state of Hesse said on Saturday (Nov 27) after mutations were found in a passenger arriving from South Africa. &ldquo Last night several Omicron-typical mutations were found in a traveller returning from South Africa,&rdquo tweeted Mr Kai Klose, social affairs minister in Hesse, home to Frankfurt airport, Germany&rsquo s biggest hub and one of Europe&rsquo s busiest airports. He added that a full sequencing of the variant was being carried out and that the person was isolating, and he urged anyone who had travelled from South Africa in the last few weeks to limit contacts and get tested. The new variant has been found at a time when Germany and many other European countries are grappling with a surge in coronavirus cases. Germany recorded 67,125 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said, and more than 100,000 people have died with Covid-19. Germany is declaring South Africa a virus-variant area, meaning airlines are allowed to fly only Germans to Germany from South Africa, a source told Reuters on Friday. Even those who are vaccinated must spend 14 days in quarantine. Earlier, Dutch health officials said they had detected 61 Covid-19 cases among people who flew from South Africa on Friday and are trying to establish whether any were infected with the Omicron variant. EU health authorities have said the new strain poses a &ldquo high to very high risk&rdquo to the continent. EU officials agreed on Friday to urge all 27 nations in the bloc to restrict travel from several southern African nations, a policy Germany has already implemented. |

Won' t lockdown. But gloves demand will be back. For many months gloves distributor adapt the wait and see approach to place order. Now they have to place order in order to secure the gloves needed in the future. New virus is ok. But more deadly virus then the concern is greater. Flu virus of course you not scared. Riverstone Holdings reports 49 per cent rise in net profit for Q3FY21NOV 9, 2021 07:41 PM
GLOVE-MAKER Riverstone Holdings chalked up a near 50 per cent jump year-on-year in net profit to RM266.4 million (S$86.4 million) for the third quarter ended Sep 30, 2021. Revenue rose about 35 per cent to RM652.8 million, on the back of demand for its healthcare examination gloves amid the pandemic as well as for its high-tech cleanroom gloves from firms in the electronics and semiconductor industries. Still, market prices have started to normalise as major distributors adopt a wait-and-see stance, Riverstone flagged. Gross profit increased 42 per cent to RM357.2 million as the average selling price was higher than prior to the pandemic, while the group chalked up a blended gross profit margin of 54.7 per cent for the quarter under review. As at Sep 30, 2021, Riverstone had cash and cash equivalents of RM1.76 billion, up from RM648.9 million as at end December 2020. The group has seen temporary delays in relation to Phase 7 of its expansion efforts as Malaysia' s movement control order (MCO) to contain the pandemic disrupted construction and other works. Therefore, the added capacity of 1.5 billion gloves is now expected to come onstream in Q1 2022. Preparations are also in the works for Phase 8 of its expansion plans, which will add up to 1.5 billion gloves and take its total annual production capacity to 13.5 billion by FY2022/2023. Chief executive Wong Teek Son acknowledged near-term challenges but added that the glove-maker is eyeing longer-term prospects to achieve sustainable growth. He said: " For one, our differentiated business model driven by our industry leading cleanroom glove business will provide the necessary support as we navigate the evolving healthcare glove market. We will also continue our focus on developing new and innovating products to diversify our income streams by capturing new market segments, namely in food processing, pharmaceutical as well as surgical glove segments to fuel growth." The counter closed at 78 Singapore cents, down 2 cents or 2.5 per cent, on Tuesday (Nov 9).

SINGAPORE - The new coronavirus variant Omicron has put the world in a state of high alert, but two experts The Straits Times spoke to on Saturday (Nov 27) say more information is needed to determine if current pandemic protocols should change. For instance, it is not yet clear if current vaccines can protect a person from falling ill after being infected by the Omicron variant, said Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore. Other things to monitor would be how fast this new variant spreads, and whether those infected would suffer a more severe form of Covid-19. Prof Teo said: " If the variant increases transmissibility, but does not increase the risk of disease and death beyond what is already observed in the Delta variant, then the impact on the healthcare system is not that large if countries are able to ensure a high uptake of vaccination and vaccine boosters." But he noted that if there is clear evidence that Omicron does increase the risk of disease and death even for the vaccinated, then countries will need to review the relevance of endemic Covid-19 strategies. " At the moment, it is still too early to determine whether the outlook is going to be pessimistic or optimistic," he said. Professor Hsu Li Yang, who is vice-dean of global health and programme leader of infectious diseases at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said the worst case scenario is that the Omicron variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant, and that it can also completely evade the immune response triggered by past infection or vaccination. If this happens, Singapore would have to abandon its approach to treating Covid-19 as an endemic disease, until new vaccines become available. He added: " But I think this scenario is very unlikely, given that it is not a completely new virus." The new variant was first detected in Gauteng, a province of South Africa, on Thursday (Nov 25). It was declared a variant of concern by the World Health Organisation on Friday (Nov 26) because of the large number of mutations detected in its spike protein, which may cause an increased risk of reinfection, among other negative effects. The spike protein is what the coronavirus uses to begin infecting human cells. It is the fifth variant of concern that has emerged since the pandemic first gripped the world almost two years ago. The Delta variant was declared a variant of concern in 2021. To curb Omicron infections, nations around the world have moved quickly to stop global transmission of the variant, ceasing flights from many countries in the continent. On Friday (Nov 26), Singapore' s Ministry of Health announced that all travellers with recent travel history to seven countries in Africa, including South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, will be barred from entering Singapore from 11.59pm on Saturday (Nov 27). On the same day, the Republic also announced six new quarantine-free travel schemes with countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Sri Lanka, which would begin next month. By the end of December, Singapore will have 27 active vaccinated travel lanes (VTLs). Of the 27 countries that the Republic has VTLs with, only the Netherlands has detected the Omicron variant. Asked if the variant could affect these VTLs, Prof Teo said it depends on factors such as the virus' incubation period - which refers to the number of days between when a person is infected and when symptoms start to show - and the length of the infectious period. He explained: " This will help to determine whether the existing testing requirements for travellers on the VTLs will result in a higher rate of leakage." Current border protocols have kept this leakage - referring to the number of travellers infected with Covid-19 - at one infected per thousand travellers, he said. Both experts said that country-specific border restrictions merely delay the arrival of the variant into Singapore. Prof Hsu said: " It is highly likely that the Omicron variant is already present and circulating in other non-African countries that have direct flight connections with Africa and Singapore." He noted that in one case of Omicron infection in Belgium, the patient had neither set foot in South Africa nor the other six countries commonly listed in the new travel bans. " Therefore, unless the situation changes, we are likely to have persons infected by this new variant on our shores within a matter of weeks." |
