Stocks close mostly higher after Fed' s Beige Book earnings beat, energy leads

Stocks closed mostly higher on Wednesday, helped by better-than-expected earnings and rising oil prices, following the release of key economic data from the Federal Reserve.

The energy sector had traded more than 2 percent higher earlier in the session, after the Energy Information Administration reported a 5.3 million crude oil drawdown. West Texas Intermediate futures for November delivery rose 2.6 percent to settle at $ 51.60 per barrel.

" It' s a combination of energy rising and better-than-expected earnings," said Christian Magoon, CEO of Amplify Investments. " We' re just riding that right now."

In economic news, The Fed released the latest iteration of its so-called Beige Book, which summarizes economic conditions in the U.S. In it, the Fed said economic activity increased at a modest pace in most regions.

" The report failed to move the needle in any way. This was as much an in-line report as we' ve had," said Adam Sarhan, CEO of Sarhan Capital.

The Beige Book was expected to garner more attention than usual as investors search for more clues about when the central bank will raise interest rates.

Overseas, European stocks traded mostly higher, with the Stoxx 600 index rising 0.34 percent. In Asia, stocks closed mixed, with the Nikkei 225 rising 0.2 percent and the Hang Seng index falling 0.38 percent.

Gold futures for December delivery rose $ 7 to settle at $ 1,269.90 per ounce.

Singapore shares close mixed, even as STI enjoys late push

THE final US presidential debate will take place at 9am local time on Thursday, which could explain Wednesday' s quiet and relatively listless trading session.

In keeping with a recent, well-established pattern, the Straits Times Index (STI) drifted within a narrow band, spending most of the day tracking the Dow futures before a late push enabled it to close with a net gain of 13.99 points at 2,844.62 .

The slight upward bias, though, was most likely thanks to firmer oil prices and encouraging earnings reported by US firms on Tuesday.

Unit volume, however, was elevated by rotational punting of low-priced speculatives and amounted to 1.7 billion units, though the dollar value done was a paltry S $ 892 million. The average worked out to S $ 0.52 per unit. Excluding warrants, there were 178 Rise versus 187 falls.

Stocks close higher as health care leads Netflix pops nearly 20%

Stocks closed higher on Tuesday, helped by stronger-than-expected quarterly reports and after mixed inflation data.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve' s discount rate meeting released Tuesday showed nine regional Federal Reserve banks pushed for an increase in the rate commercial banks are charged for emergency loans in September.

There are no other major economic data due Tuesday, but the Fed' s Beige Book, housing starts and existing home sales are some key data scheduled for release later this week.

In oil markets, U.S. crude settled 0.7 percent higher, at $ 50.29 a barrel as the U.S. dollar traded flat to slightly lower.

Gold futures for December delivery settled $ 6.30 higher at $ 1,262.90 an ounce.
