The Nasdaq notched another record high Tuesday, as big tech cut some losses into the close, though uncertainty over the progress of talks concerning the next coronavirus stimulus package weighed on sentiment.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.62%, or 164 points. The S&P 500 rose 0.36%, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.35.%. Contradictory remarks on the progress of the virus aid bill from lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle did little to help sentiment on risk. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer suggested that lawmakers were inching closer to a deal, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly said that there had been no progress in a week. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, meanwhile, said she doesn't think there will be a deal this week, cooling hopes that relief would arrive sooner rather than later. The talks have been held up by a disagreement over the size of unemployment support, which was set at $600 a week in March. "Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree on sending $1,200 in direct stimulus payments to most Americans, but cannot agree on the amount of extended federal unemployment benefits, which expired on July 31, Democrats want to preserve the $600 amount, while Republicans want to reduce it to $200," Stifel said in a note. Still, some sectors tied to the progress of the economy like energy and real estate helped the broader market end the day above the flatline. Energy climbed more than 2%, led by Williams Companies (NYSE:WMB), Devon Energy (NYSE:DVN) and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO). Tech, however, appeared to run out of steam as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) gave up some gains after denying reports that it was weighing a move to acquire TikTok. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) inched higher, while Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) traded in the red. On the earnings front, investors digested mixed quarterly results. Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ:TTWO) raised its full-year guidance after reporting second-quarter results that topped Wall Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines, sending its shares 5.9% higher. Virgin Galactic (NYSE:SPCE) nosedived 13.8% after reporting a wider than expected quarterly loss. The company also detailed plans to raise about $460 million, through the sale of about 20.5 million shares. |

Asian news
Asian stocks looked poised for gains Tuesday after a technology-fueled rally in the U.S. amid positive economic data and the potential for further stimulus. The dollar held gains. Futures pointed higher in Japan, Australia and Hong Kong. S&P 500 contracts were little changed. Earlier, the Nasdaq 100 reached a record as traders sought out companies poised to do best in a stay-at-home economy. Apple Inc. set an all-time high and Microsoft Corp. gained as it tried to salvage a deal for the U.S. operations of TikTok. The dollar rebounded following its worst July in a decade and Treasuries fell across the curve as data showed U.S. manufacturing expanded in July at the fastest pace since March 2019. |

The White House
Immediately after President Trump's remarks, the CEO of the Tennessee Valley Authority signaled willingness to reverse a terrible decision that would have ousted 200+ highly skilled American workers and replaced them with lower-wage foreign workers. Itsme_wahchek replying to The White House 👉 This would be great news if there were 50 million federal employees in stead of 50 million private sector Americans. Saving 200 federal jobs in the wake of the 50 million jobs that Trump lost is a joke. I bet Trump wants a big pat on the back for that. Kim @kmgagie replying to The White House 👉 It?s like every day Trump picks someone from the sky to ?take care of?. There is no strategy for combatting virus but he has time to worry about foreign workers. Seems like everything he does is through an EO. Big deal. He has divided this country so badly?Nov 3rd is coming. |

Wall Street climbed Monday, as big tech continued to rack up gains following bullish earnings last week, while healthcare names rallied on positive coronavirus treatment news.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.04%, or 275 points. The S&P 500 gained 0.92%, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 1.64%. Tech continued its melt-up, led by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), with the latter up more than 5% after confirming that it was in talks to buy social media company TikTok from ByteDance. The potential acquisition has been cheered by analysts on Wall Street, who believe that the addition of TikTok could boost Microsoft's consumer offering. "(Satya) Nadella has essentially had the golden touch since becoming CEO? although the missing piece in the puzzle has been a consumer trojan horse strategy which TikTok can fill along with a re-rating/sum-of-the-parts valuation," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said in a note. Beyond tech, healthcare also supported investor sentiment on stocks thanks to signs of progress in the race for a coronavirus treatment. Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) said it would get a phase 3 trial of its experimental coronavirus treatment, LY-CoV555, sending its shares more than 1% higher. A lack of progress between U.S. lawmakers over the next coronavirus stimulus package, however, kept gains in the broader market in check. Unemployment assistance, set at $600 a week in March, has since lapsed, and renewing it has remained a key sticking for lawmakers. On the earnings front, Clorox (NYSE:CLX) slipped about 3% despite delivering quarterly results that beat on the top and bottom lines. In economic news, signs of a turnaround in manufacturing continued. ISM manufacturing data for July showed an uptick to 54.2, beating expectations of 53.6. A reading above 50 in the ISM index indicates an expansion in manufacturing, which accounts for about 12% of the U.S. economy. "We remain confident that manufacturing will be more resilient to Covid-related developments than the service side of the economy, and activity should continue to expand in coming quarters as the recovery takes hold," Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) said in a note. Still, the path ahead for the economy is one paved with uncertainty. "I think the slowdown in July would be consistent with the idea that we shouldn?t expect a completely smooth transition as you go forward because this is a crisis and there?s going to be ups and downs," St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said on Monday. |

Asian stocks looked set to start August in mixed fashion amid a resurgence in Covid-19 cases and simmering U.S.-China tensions. Currencies were little changed.
Futures pointed higher in Japan, dipped in Hong Kong and were flat in Australia. S&P 500 contracts fluctuated in early trading. Infections are picking up again in some U.S. states and a senior Federal Reserve official on Sunday urged Congress to act to support Americans laid off due to the pandemic and suggested a fresh lockdown. In Australia, Victoria state tightened restrictions and declared a state of disaster as cases skyrocket, while the Philippines imposed a stricter lockdown for capital Manila and nearby areas. Oil dipped and gold rose. |

Trump gripes about Fauci love, praises doctor warning about ETs Reuters Agence France-Presse  30 Jul 2020 Donald Trump groused about medical expert Anthony Fauci' s approval ratings and said " nobody likes me" as the US president continued to seek praise for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Fauci, an infectious disease expert on Trump' s coronavirus task force, is one of the most trusted people in government. Many Americans listen to his advice diligently on how to protect themselves from infection. Trump said he and others in his administration deserved plaudits for their handling of the virus. Fauci has a " high approval rating," he noted. " So why don' t I have a high approval rating with respect to the virus? We should have a very high [approval rating]. " So it is sort of curious. A man works for us and yet they' re highly thought of and nobody likes me. It can only be my personality." Yet Trump, in the same briefing, praised Stella Immanuel, an eccentric preacher-doctor who blames gynecological problems on sex with evil spirits and believes the US government is run by " reptilians." He called her " spectacular." Immanuel' s web page as well as her YouTube account reveal a long list of bizarre and unscientific beliefs. These include that " tormenting spirits" routinely have " astral sex" with women, which causes " gynecological problems, marital distress, miscarriages" and more. In a 2015 video, Immanuel, who leads a religious group called Fire Power Ministries, says: " There are people ruling this nation that are not even human," describing them as " reptilian spirits" who are " half human, half ET." She also rails against the use of " alien DNA" to treat sick people, which she says resulted in humans mixing with demons. Trump also retweeted a right-wing conspiracy theory that Fauci helped push the virus to hurt his reelection. The tweet, shared by Trump with his 84 million followers, claimed Immanuel was highlighting " the biggest scandal in modern American history." This was " the suppression of hydroxychloroquine by Fauci & the Democrats to perpetuate Covid deaths to hurt Trump." https://www.thestandard.com.hk/section-news/section/11/221404/Trump-gripes-about--Fauci-love,-praises-doc-warning-about-ETs ![]()   |

US Dow Jump!
The Dow closed higher on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged and chairman Jerome Powell declared the central bank was not even thinking about raising rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.61%, the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.35% and the S&P 500 added 1.25%. The Fed kept its benchmark rate near zero and suggested rates would remain in this range "until it is confident that the economy has weathered recent events and is on track to achieve its maximum employment and price stability goals." "The economy will need high levels of accommodative monetary policy for an extended period," he added. The dovish tone on monetary policy comes investors digested a slew of mixed earnings from corporates. Heavyweight Dow component Boeing (NYSE:BA) fell 2.9% after reporting mixed quarterly results. The aircraft maker reported wider-than-expected quarterly losses and warned it would trim production amid weakness in the aviation sector. Shopify Inc (NYSE:SHOP) fared better, rallying 6.6% as the e-commerce company delivered blowout second-quarter results, with earnings and revenue topping analysts' consensus estimates. Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) climbed 3.7% as it raised its earnings outlook for the year after reporting a smaller-than-expected loss in the fiscal third-quarter. General Electric (NYSE:GE) posted a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss as its performance was hurt by weakness in its jet-engine business, sending its shares more than 4.3% lower. Tech held onto gains as Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Microsoft and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) provided testimony in a congressional hearing on antitrust in Big Tech. The sector was also helped by a surge in chip stocks, led by a 12.6% pop in Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) as the chipmaker raised its revenue guidance and beat quarterly earnings estimates. Energy, meanwhile, was helped by a rise in oil prices following data showing U.S. stockpiles unexpectedly declined by more than 10 million barrels last week. |

President Donald Trump groused on Tuesday about medical expert Anthony Fauci's high approval ratings and joked that (nobody likes me) as he struggles to improve his standing with voters for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
(It can only be my personality), said Trump. Fauci, an infectious disease expert who is on Trump's coronavirus task force, is one of the most trusted people in government and many Americans listen to his advice diligently on how to protect themselves from infection. Trump, on the other hand, has drawn criticism over his handling of the pandemic, putting him in jeopardy of losing the Nov. 3 presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden. The subject of Fauci came up at a news conference where Trump defended his support for malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a hedge against the virus. Trump said he felt the drug worked "in the early stages." Most public health experts say hydroxychloroquine should not be used to treat the coronavirus because it could lead to heart and other problems. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last month revoked its emergency-use authorization for hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 after several studies cast doubt on its effectiveness. Trump said he and others in his administration deserved plaudits for their handling of the virus, not just Fauci and another prominent member of the task force, Deborah Birx. "He's working with our administration and for the most part we have done pretty much what he and others, Dr. Birx and others, who are terrific, recommended. And he's got this high approval rating. So why don't I have a high approval rating and the administration with respect to the virus? We should have a very high (approval rating)," Trump said. "So it sort of is curious, a man works for us, and yet they're highly thought of and nobody likes me. It can only be my personality," he said. The recent rise in U.S. deaths and infections has dampened early hopes that the country was past the worst of a crisis that has decimated businesses and put millions of Americans out of work. Four U.S. states in the South and West reported one-day records of coronavirus deaths on Tuesday. [nL2N2EZ1CP] The national death toll is almost 150,000. Fauci has been a subject of debate within the White House for months because he is quite frank in saying where he agrees and disagrees with the president. Trump has said repeatedly that Fauci advised him he did not have to close down travel with China, where the outbreak originated, early this year when the scope of the pandemic was not yet clear, and that he did not accept the advice. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows publicly chided Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro for writing an opinion article attacking Fauci. |
