In spite of skyrocketing living costs, the number of High Net Worth Individuals in Singapore still increased in 2013, according to the annual World Wealth Report released by Capgemini and RBC Wealth Management.

According to the report, there were 105,000 High Net Worth Individuals (HWNI) in Singapore in 2013, with a combined wealth of US$523 billion.

The country&rsquo s HWNI population grew by 4.5% in 2013, compared with 91,150 in 2012.

Singapore ranks 25th among the world&rsquo s countries where HWNIs are most populous. HWNIs are generally considered to be people with wealth in excess of US$1 million.

Countries with highest proportion of millionaires

Global private financial wealth rose by 14.6 per cent last year to US$152 trillion, partly due to rebounding stock markets, according to a report released by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on Monday.

In total, the number of millionaire households around the world increased by 2.6 million to 16.3 million.

According to BCG, the growth of private wealth accelerated across most regions in 2013, with the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan, representing the fastest-growing region worldwide.

The findings were released as part of a report called, &ldquo Riding a Wave of Growth: Global Wealth 2014&rdquo , which also said that the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan will top Europe in private wealth.

&ldquo As the debate over the global polarisation of wealth rages on, one thing is certain: more people are becoming wealthy,&rdquo it said. BCG listed the top countries with millionaire households based on number and the proportion to total population.

 Alert Admin 		In its annual report for the Financial Year (FY) 2013/14. Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) has announced a record tax collection of S$41.6 billion.

This is 0.5% higher than what IRAS collected in last financial year.

Several factors have contributed to the rise in collection, including on-time tax returns by taxpayers, levies on consumption, property taxes and stamp duties, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and ?sin? taxes from gambling.

Also, tax arrears fell to a record low of just 0.77% of the total net tax assessed.

?On-time tax filing improved from 94% to 95.6% for individuals, and 80.9% to 82.5% for companies.

More GST-registered businesses filed their tax returns on time, with a high on-time filing rate of 93.9%.? IRAS said.

It added:?IRAS? continual efforts to make things simple and convenient for taxpayers have helped raise the voluntary compliance level of Singapore?s taxpayers.

IRAS expanded the No-Filing Service (NFS) to 1.23 million taxpayers, including 15,000 first-time taxpayers, for the 2014 tax filing season.

?Despite the record collections, there were nonetheless declines in collections in other areas, namely in corporate, individual and withholding taxes:- Corporate income tax fell 1.1% to S$12.7 bil - Individual income tax fell 0.4% to S$7.7 bil - Withholding tax dropped 13.8% to S$1.15 bil.

Here are some other key numbers:- GST collection grew 5.3% to S$9.5 bil - Property tax grew 10.6% to S$4.2 bil - Stamp duty fell by 8.8% to S$3.9 bil - ?Sin? taxes (4-D, Toto, Big Sweep) rose 3.2% to S$2.4 bil.

IRAS also reported, more people have made it to the million-dollar club, with 4,231 earning assessable income of more than S$1 mil, a rise from the 4,220 people who made the cut last year.

This group of people contributed S$1.48 bil in taxes from their combined income of S$8.04 bil.

IRAS said its efforts to simplify the system for taxpayers to pay their taxes have resulted in a rise of voluntary compliance.

Still, some 15, 233 non-compliant cases were discovered by the tax authority which recovered about S$387 million in taxes and penalties.

?While we actively promote voluntary compliance, to deter non-compliance and establish a strong presence,? IRAS said.

?By balancing tough measures to recover outstanding taxes with softer methods to encourage voluntary compliance, we help the majority of taxpayers in Singapore pay their fair share of taxes.

Through these measures, we seek to maintain the public?s trust in IRAS as a strong and fair tax authority.?

Countries with highest proportion of millionaires

Global private financial wealth rose by 14.6 per cent last year to US$152 trillion, partly due to rebounding stock markets, according to a report released by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on Monday.

In total, the number of millionaire households around the world increased by 2.6 million to 16.3 million.

According to BCG, the growth of private wealth accelerated across most regions in 2013, with the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan, representing the fastest-growing region worldwide.

The findings were released as part of a report called, &ldquo Riding a Wave of Growth: Global Wealth 2014&rdquo , which also said that the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan will top Europe in private wealth.

&ldquo As the debate over the global polarisation of wealth rages on, one thing is certain: more people are becoming wealthy,&rdquo it said. BCG listed the top countries with millionaire households based on number and the proportion to total population.

Trading were abit more rebust in recent days, as more activity and interestvwere focus on penny stocks.

Most were centred on day most avtive (rotational) penny plays, such as Artvision Tech, which rose 0.8c or 9.6% to 9.1 cent with 132.6m shr changed hands, next is  Jaya Holdings added 0.6c or 9.8% to 6.7 cents with 108,1m shr changed hands  and followed by  MDR Limited.

Penny' s will go on to and on rotational play...Huat...argh.

 Alert Admin 		SGX should think long term and not discourage long term investors. It should generate income not from trading activities but from initial listings. Make our stock exchange a friendly environment for long term investors and help to grow the businesses of companies listed in the stock exchange and if possible have a share in a company's business.SGX should get back to basic and understand the original objective of the stock exchange which is to raise money for companies to operate their business and not for it to become a casino.Helping our companies to grow will create jobs and revenue in the form of tax for the country, instead of becoming a casino and destroying the investment of value investors, and destroying the abilities of companies to operate in the process.

The ten new listings on Catalist in the 2014 YTD have raised a total of S$226 million. With a combined market capitalisation of S$2 billion, these ten stocks generated an average total return gain of 36% as of yesterday, outperforming the 12 Catalist IPOs in 2013. Of the ten Catalist stocks listed in 2014, the three stocks that have the largest market capitalisation include TalkMed Group, QT Vascular and Spackman Entertainment Group. Including KOP' s RTO, the number of listings on Catalist over the first seven months of 2014 was 11.

In the full year of 2013, the 12 IPOs on Catalist raised a total of S$253 million. These 12 stocks have a combined market capitalisation of S$1.9 billion and as of Friday, generated an average total return gain of 4.8%, with a median gain of 8%.

Catalist listings help expand key resource sector
  • In the space of 12 months, five MOGs have been added to the Catalist board expanding the number of stocks in the sector by almost 30% to 22 stocks. This consisted of four IPOs and one RTO.
  • Catalist caters to the needs of fast-growing enterprises. There are currently 146 stocks on Catalist listed for trading with more than S$11.3 billion in combined market capitalisation.
  • There have been 10 Catalist IPOs listed in the first seven months of 2014, raising S$226 million, following on from 12 Catalist IPOs in 2013 that raised S$253 million.


During 2013 n 2014, new Catalist listings have made significant impact on number of stocks in the Minerals, Oil & Gas sector (MOGs) as well as Healthcare sector. Each of these key sectors are represented by less than 30 stocks.

As S' pore continues to evolve as a commodity hub status and a regional center for healthcare-related services it is natural that more of these companies will seek to list on SGX.

Moreover, there is US$2.1 trillion dollars of assets under management in Singapore, including portfolio managers tracking the Singapore stock market. Resource stocks have also traditionally maintained a higher turnover velocity than the broader market.
