But if Sia go compete Budget, how to fight against Air Asia? How much Sia pay its employees? How much air asia pay?

See Genting's cost cutting measures. Even when revenue falls, profit still jumps every quarter.
Right move by SIA. Have to wait a few years or quarters to see transformation results. Expect Singapore job market to worsen further. With more job cuts by other companies and coupled with interest rate hikes, property prices may weaken further or crash in time to come. |

Most likely sia would go big on budget airline division as the profit more sustainable than premium, laying off jobs on premium flight, cut capacity and closing counters on those less profitable route through more code sharing to maintain brand recognition. The job cut can be big this time if sia transform into budget airline with profitable premium division. The airplane renewal for the next 5 years would make sia mother of all budget airline as it offered budget long haul service. In short SIA gona changed from premium airline into a   more mainstream budget airline. Lot of heads and perf would roll, enjoy the drama since the ceo leaked job cut would be coming.

Cheap Lesson for Cathay Pacific By David Fickling BRYAN VAN DER BEEK/BLOOMBERG What's Europe's most profitable airline?Air France-KLM, whose premium passengers sleep in private suites with memory-foam mattresses, dine on Joël Robuchon dishes and have private jets at their disposal? Or Ryanair Plc, which offers flights starting at 10 euros ($11) and whose chief executive officer has mused about charging passengers for toilet visits? No prizes for guessing it's Ryanair. Trailing 12-month operating margins at the Irish budget carrier run at 23 percent, compared with 4.8 percent at Air France and 6.9 percent at Lufthansa AG. They have a bare-bones image, but discount airlines are where the best money is made. Of the world's 10 most profitable airlines by operating margins, only Alaska Air Group Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. are full-service carriers. There's a lesson in that for Asia's once-mighty full-service operators, Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. Both have been relatively late to the discount-aviation party, and are now carrying out strategic reviews to address the threat from state-owned airlines in China and the Gulf. Budget carriers were until relatively recently a smaller presence in Asia than in Europe and North America. Now they're indisputably a major part of the future. Survival may depend on embracing the concept. |

Business and politics is diff. Bite the bullet , be humble and work on conperitive edge. Go ard and offer discounts to budget pricing with posh planes and servives to hav better mkt share. Only can be done by privatisation? Lol.

Cut jobs may not be ideal..it can also be disruptive if got strike- like what happen once upon a time ...
They shld look at the performance of the mgmt team & their pay package for cuts instead.. of penalised the staff... To remain competitive they shld lower or give discounts to their flights..and study how the budget airline like airasia remained profitable.. alternatively the laidoff staff can also join airasia & others.. |

Sia had done everything to bring down cost, buy modern planes, start budget line etc. What is left now is the ugly side, cutting jobs and selling non core assets. Benefits for premium division also get cut too, it just cut and m9re cut. Maybe sia might just switch to more budget based than premium. The most profitable airline in the world 90% are from budget airline. Premium service diminished return, might as well divert capacity and manpower to budget when profit are. Cut 5000 jobs might do the job as taken qantas case in 2014 where 6000 job loss witn total 30000.

Job cut coming for SIA as reported in businesstimes. Hope it would be big enough to return profit back to norm. SIA for donkey years refuse to do massive layoff to improve margin while america airlines do very heavy lifting cutting their headcount massively improving profit and stock price. Enjoy the head cutting drama in sia, hope it run into thousands....

Most likely communist leaders would limit automation to save local job, so no panic. Clean energy industries already get attacked in us as it push out older workers in fossil fuel industries. Trump trying to revive coal industries by backing away from paris climate pact.  | ||||

Go to china u be even more shocked, they built road using manual labour even though they had the resource and technical skill to use machine. Reason u guess what, provide jobs for local to avoid social unrest. To be in gov any where in the world, most imp thing is not about efficiency or making money, the thing that matter most is avoid social unrest. That why smrt got privatised, anger by public over mrt breakdown and profit focus management. In the end gov take back control and subcon the operation to third party while maintain control on asset and maintenance. Sound familar theme, same shit happening in sia, sia service standard dropping and losing market share. Goverment would stand in very soon as no repeat of nol and smrt allowed as anything happen to sia a lot of people lives would be affected directly or indirectly. Too big to fail comp sia is lol.

Oa is ok but medisave is no use. Then comes the min sum. Getting fed up being tight like this for a system whuch cant work. No manufacturing, np trade, very dangerous bal sheet. P & l will suffer thus very heacy oni ndirect taxes without benefits. Edu cost is high comparing with full day international school and no relevant jobs cos system is not ready thus structural unemployment.

Money just a function of labour unit, don take it seriously. Got enough to spend is good enough and don pay income tax cos it would be used to support peep in power. Sg gov don mind spending a few bil to privatise sia as it support the economy indirectly through tourism and help to balance sg trade deficit between europe and us through airplane purchase. In fact sia 21b plane order though 2022 would cover sg trade deficit. SIA most likely taken private to save face and local jobs.
