Straits Times Index  2,822.20  0.2% +5.53 ▲
Singapore shares close just 5.5 points up WALL Street' s all-time high on Monday made for a firm opening here on Tuesday. But the reversal, when it came, was perhaps not a surprise given that observers are now convinced that the new US anti-trade administration will not be good for Asia . So it was that after rising to an intraday high of 2,839, the Straits Times Index settled settled back to 2,822.2 for a net rise of just 5.53 points. The Dow futures, in the meantime, traded around 60 points higher. The consolation - if it can be called that - was that volume still above the S $ 1 billion mark at 2.4 billion units worth S $ 1.6 billion. Excluding warrants there were 235 lit versus 196 falls.   |

Major indexes rip to record closing highs as energy spikes 2% U.S. equities closed higher on Monday, led by energy stocks, as oil prices rose on renewed optimism that OPEC was closing in on a deal to cut production. " I do not know if it will happen, but the market will hopes that it will," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Boston Private Wealth, referring to a possible OPEC deal. The three major indexes closed at record highs simultaneously for the first time since this past summer. The Dow Jones industrial average rose around 88 points, surpassing previous closing and intraday records of 18,923.06 and 18,934.05, respectively. The S & P 500 topped its all-time intraday high of 2,193.81, hit on Aug. 15, during midday trade and closed at a record high, as the energy sector gained 2.2 percent. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.89 percent, also posting records on a closing And intraday basis. The Russell 2000 and the S & P Mid Cap 400 indexes, which track small and mid cap stocks, respectively, also hit record highs. " I think oil, and commodities in general, are leading the way for stocks," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. He also said that crude prices received a boost from a weaker dollar. U.S. crude for December delivery rose 3.9 percent to settle at $ 47.49 per barrel. The U.S. dollar index, which surged 2.24 percent last week to its highest level since 2003, traded 0.26 percent lower, around 100.9. That said, Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab, said he expects oil prices to hold in a range roughly between $ 40 and $ 50 per barrel. " We' ve got high supply and slow-growing demand," he said " Any deal between OPEC would be shaky, as we' ve seen." Overseas, European stocks mostly rose, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index gaining 0.25 percent. In Asia, stocks closed mixed, with the Korean Kospi falling 0.43 percent and the Shanghai composite gaining 0.79 percent. Asia markets mixed Nikkei up 0.3%, ASX and Kospi slip 0.4% each Asia markets were mixed on Wednesday, with investors likely to continue eyeing Trump-related news for implications for the region. " Donald Trump' s economic policies remain the number one consideration for world markets," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in a note on Monday. " Investors are trying to strike the right balance between positioning for a major dose of US fiscal stimulus And not getting too far committed, given the uncertainty surrounding what policies the new Trump Administration will actually implement, " he said. Markets have been watching for clues on which systems U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will pursue and which campaign promises, particularly related to global trade, may fall by the wayside after his surprise election win earlier this month. Japan' s Nikkei 225 opened up 0.28 percent, likely due to the weaker yen. Japan October trade data was released early Monday morning, showing that exports fell for the 13th straight month amid weak foreign demand, while imports fell 16.5 percent, compared with the Reuters consensus Estimate for a 16.3 percent decline. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up 0.98 percent at $ 46.14 a barrel, while Brent added 1.07 percent to $ 47.35. Both crude futures had risen nearly 5 percent last week. Asian Indexes

Stocks close within striking distance of record highs financials lead U.S. equities rose on Thursday, putting the major indexes close to all-time highs, as investors parsed through economic data and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen' s testimony. Yellen, the head of the Federal Reserve, testified in front of Congress. In prepared remarks, Yellen said a rate hike could be " appropriate margin soon," adding there are dangers to waiting too long to tighten monetary policy. Yellen also said she would Not step down from her until her term is done. A large number of market participants expect the central bank to raise interest rates next month. According to the CME Group' s FedWatch tool, market expectations for a December rate hike were around 90 percent Thursday. " Janet Yellen has further cemented the argument that a rate could take place Next next. For us, it is a Done Deal and the question which we are focused on is if the Fed is sensitive to Treasury yields," Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst At Think Markets, said in a note. US Treasury yields rose on Thursday, with the two-year note yield near 1.03 percent and the benchmark 10-year yield around 2.28 percent as of 3:23 pm " If you were looking for some silver linings in the economic data, the housing starts ... and the jobless claims are two of them," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities. " I think the market has been doing a Pretty good job of trying to price in a Trump administration, and now we' re pricing in an improving economy. " We can speculate about what the world is going to look like in Jan. 20, but we do not have to do that with the economy," he said. In oil markets, U.S. crude futures for December delivery fell 0.33 percent to settle at $ 45.42 per barrel, as evidence of global oversupply weighed, including Wednesday' s report from the Energy Information Administration, which showed a larger-than-expected stockpile build. The U.S. dollar traded higher against a basket of currencies, with the euro near $ 1.062 and the yen around 109.98. On Wednesday, the dollar index hit its highest level in more than a decade. Straits Times Index  2,813.48  0.7% +19.49 ▲
Singapore shares close higher, led by banks A REBOUND in the three local banks on Thursday enabled the Straits Times Index to finish 19.49 points higher at 2,813.48. Also helped was an early rise in the Dow futures that signalled a probably firm opening for Wall Street for its own Thursday session. Turnover reached to 1.4 billion units worth S $ 1.2 billion, roughly in line with the daily average of the past fortnight. Excluding warrants, there were 204 rising versus 197 falls. All three banks finished higher, led by DBS Bank' s S $ 0.23 rose to S $ 16.43 that came with almost seven million shares traded. Rising interest rates have chiefly been responsible as these would have a positive impact on bank earnings. |

Asia Shares Slip as Oil Slides A drop in oil prices weighed on Asia stocks on Thursday, ahead of inflation, jobs and exports data expected from the U.S. and testimony from Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen on the economic outlook to Congress later in the day. Crude prices fell after data showed U.S. crude oil inventories in the country were higher than expected. Brent crude, the international benchmark, was last trading down 0.2% at $46.53 a barrel. The data overshadowed comments from Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak who told reporters at a Moscow energy forum that Russia would " support any decision" adopted by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Crude prices surged nearly 6% Tuesday on news that OPEC would try to limit production ahead of a meeting in Vienna. In Japan, the Nikkei Stock Average closed flat even as the yen slipped 0.3% against the dollar. Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said on Thursday that he would hold down yields in Japan ahead of a likely rate-increase cycle in the U.S. " Interest rates may have risen in the U.S., but that doesn' t mean that we have to automatically allow Japanese interest rates to increase in tandem," he said in parliament. The remark came within an hour of an announcement by the BOJ that it was prepared to buy an unlimited amount of certain government bonds at fixed rates, to bring down yields. The tactic worked: yields on two-year and five-year Japanese government bonds fell on Thursday after the BOJ' s announcement. The 10-year yield also briefly fell to 0.010% after hitting as high as 0.025% earlier in the morning. Korea' s Kospi and the Shanghai Composite each gained 0.1% while Hong Kong' s Hang Seng Index was down 0.4%. " The market is getting back to normal after people were overconcerned about the elections," said Arthur Kwong, head of equities for Asia at BNP Paribas Investment Partners. " [Investor] behaviour will be now be correlated to fundamentals." Later in the US on Thursday, data on October consumer prices, weekly jobless claims and export sales are due. But the market will be focused on congressional testimony from US Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen. New York Fed President William Dudley and Fed Board Governor Lael Brainard will also be speaking at public events.   |

Asia stocks lower as oil prices extend slide 1 Hour Ago Asia markets were softer on Thursday, weighed by the stronger dollar and lower oil prices. Nikkei 225 traded down 0.13 percent, recovering from earlier losses of nearly 0.4 percent. The Japanese benchmark index had enjoyed five straight sessions of gains and was up nearly 10 percent since November 9. The Bank of Japan announced it would buy 10-year Japanese government bonds (JGBs) in order to keep yields around zero percent and cap short-term rates. This was the central bank' s first bond operation since September when it adopted a new policy framework targeting 10-year JGB yields. Japanese banks were lower after the news. Mitsubishi UFJ was down 2.9 percent to 662.5 yen, Mizuho slid 1.46 percent to 196 yen, while Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group tumbled 2.15 percent to 4,099 yen. Chinese markets were also lower: The Shanghai composite was down 0.31 percent and the Shenzhen composite slid 0.561 percent. During Asian trade, US crude futures fell 0.35 percent to $ 45.41 a barrel, while Brent futures shed 0.34 percent to $ 46.47 a barrel. Oil prices slipped on Wednesday in the U.S. session, after the U.S. Energy Information Administration said crude inventory climbed by 5.3 million barrels last week, compared to a Reuters poll of analysts that had forecast a 1.5 million barrel-build. The three major US indexes have been clocking gains since Donald Trump' s surprise presidential election victory November 8, as markets anticipated the prospect of more growth-oriented policies, including higher infrastructure spending and the deregulation of the financial industry.
